Stoned Gremlin Productions Presents: CHEAP
"Cheap" is an explicit thriller detailing the feasibility of producing and distributing snuff films, which are still only considered to be an urban legend. Driven mad by his failure to sell a profitable film to the porn industry, a director decides to create authentic snuff films with the assistance of two teenage runaways and a perverted cameraman. When the films bring in a profit through an amateur internet production company, they begin to see the film industry for what it really is: a world of backstabbing and double crosses. The group of twisted filmmakers then extract their own form of graphic revenge on the very people who made them successful.
If you have a website and would like to do a review for "Cheap," I'll gladly add it to the external review links of the movie's imdb page! No matter if you like or dislike the movie.

Just watched the first half. While it did take awhile to warm up, I actually liked what I saw, the lines were good, the acting was pretty good for the most part, and The characters are believable. I'll watch the second half when I gt back from work

Brad. I just watched the whole thing off the back of Bad Lieutenent 2009 and boy is my night sleazy! Obviously picture quality and sound with available tools aside (I know this too well) I gotta say it was enjoyable, dark and well acted. Then again the quality of the camera added to the atmosphere of the film. I think shot with high end equipment the movie would be too slick and not as grisly as it was. The highest compliment I can award this film was that I could "smell" it. You know how you can watch a visceral movie (like Chainsaw Massacre) and you know exactly how it smells? Maybe it's just me.
Anyhoo Kudos!

I think it's a great topic for a film.

I must say, I liked this one better than "Freak Out", although I think it only picked up pace in the second half. Not to say the first half was bad, but it felt kinda drawn out at times. Also, and this might just be me, it would have been more effective to not explicitly show the tapes (at least not all of them). The air of mystery they have is what makes these snuff films.
Other than that: great script, great acting, great editing job... and the choice of music, while contradicting everything going on, was strangly fitting.
Good job!

Excellent job, Brad!! That was a MILLION times better than "Snuff"! God... those masks were so creepy to look at. I thought everyone did a very effective job and I loved some of the imagery. I think the use of black & white really gives your films an authentic look that most movies don't have. They reminded me of a certain controversial French film called "Man Bites Dog" (1992). Have you seen it? It's about a film crew that documents a serial killer's crimes on camera. Much like "Cheap", it was, for the most part, consistently funny but featured scenes that were genuinely shocking as well. I loved that one and I also really liked this one too. I can't wait to hear what you have to say on the commentary track!
"Hi. Remember me? I'm the guy who makes movies." I love that line.

I love "Man Bites Dog"! That's a great one. Simultaneously hilarious and shockingly violent.
Reply to this
Very dark but very well done. The grainy, handheld camera style definitely works for this. It really looks like what a snuff film would look like (if they existed).
Joe: I actually have the movie poster for "Man Bites Dog" hanging in my living room.

No offense, I've yet to watch it yet but from the description provided. It sounds eerily similar to Last House On Dead End Street.

None taken. The plot is like a modern, campier "Last House." Honestly, aside from the story about a snuff film maker and his crew, the two movies, in tone and in execution, are vastly different from one another.

Interesting enough, but it still was a bit on the long side. Otherwise, great job doug.

that wasn't bad. Damn good for a film like this, actually! Not to offend, but the acting was noticably better than in Freak Out. Honestly, that film lost me because of that aspect. I know it's not exactly professional, but...yeah. Sorry.
Admittedly, I couldn't help but chuckle at the first killing. When the two were kicking him kinda gently, I was just thinking, "Ow...stop it, ya douche..ow..that mildly hurts." But I like the choice of keeping that silent. It added a new level to it, like watching an actual snuff film shot in a cheap quality with no sound.
One question, though. What was with the blackface masks? Why that mask specifically?

Brad found those damn masks on sale and we thought they were hilariously offensive.

Excellent remake of LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET with a stylish low budget look. The perverted camera man at first reminded me of the weak willed little brother of the main villain in LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT but evolved into more of a NECROMANTIC type character. I was expecting the romantic music from NECROMANTIC to show up when he was showering
Music added alot of creepy contrasts of beauty and ugliness. It was also pretty funny when it seemed to go perfectly with what was happening on screen.
The acting was top notch with each character complimenting the other. Sort of like Bruce Campbell in the EVIL DEAD where he is fantastic but without the other actors and actresses it wouldnt had been the same.
When i saw you wearing your glasses i thought oh my goodness thats gonna remind people too much of The Cinema Snob but over time it actually made things creepier as if this could be..real.
Plenty of unexpected twists and turns with a almost heroic ending in its sense of duty and not selling out
Thanks for this wonderful ritual like feast of retro disturbing unreality where it might have been you creating the actual version and the original creators sitting in your chair upon some quantum reality remix.

Just finished watching tonight, and will review/analysis like I did FREAK OUT last time.
My early reaction is that across the board, you have improved vastly on FREAK OUT. More over, while I know you are influenced by the exploitation genre, I really do believe that you have something many of those films lacked, and that is a really exploration of the personal, ethical and political implications of your subject matter.
Reply to this
I liked this movie a lot. I think Freak Out was a little better (besides the Performance from that one girl you cast because she would do nudity(she sucked) and how come the movie about the porn industry has no nudity while the movie about the gay guy had full frontal? just saying.)
I think the shitty quality of the film worked well here with the whole snuff angle, and the title. Everything in the film is Cheap including peoples lives. You can write some really good one liners. My favorite being
"...With this your life wont be a complete failure...you'll pass with a d-" good stuff.

Bravo Brad, I really didn't expect much but the movie is really superbly done and disturbing in it's premise as snuff being seen just as business. I really didn't see this movie as campy but as brutal and the quality of the tape it really gave it a more realistic look, cheap and degrading. It was like the camera was also a character in this movie because as the people in it, it had nothing redeemable about it. The music made you think there was still hope that was suddenly shattered by the fact every scene that had an uplifting song was accompanied by deranging imagery like the camera was playing mean spirited pranks on you.
The second snuff movie, which by the way was the best filmed out of the 4, really took me by surprise and showed me that even Jack has nothing redeemable about him. Your portrayal of him was brilliant because you could jump from feeling to feeling in an instant. Jack in a second could look naive and than have a disgusting smile. He reminds me allot of Ted Bundy because he seemed a really calm and charming guy and no one would expect him to be so merciless and distant from humanity for the sake of his art.
Also as I see the movie presents a pseudo-utopia were you don't show the controversy a snuff movie would actually create, if it were made public on the net and be sold, but you actually portray the degradation of the people around it and the effect it creates on humanity or better said you present us the kind of world snuff could actually be sold. The producer that sees his actors as shit, his director Derek as a dog and treats his wife as one of his employees, even if she's pregnant, really convinces us that it would be possible a person as Max Force would be able to exist. I must say David Gobble really makes him believable in presenting him as a power hungry business man that wants to be on the top even if he sacrifices his life and the ones around him. He doesn't even ask for a second if the movies are real, he just wants the money.
My only gripe with the movie would be the music because it seemed out of place in some scenes and it covered the dialog. In other scenes it would've been better if you had chosen something more instrumental because it would have given the actors an advantage to present their feelings. You could say the music was covering their performance. Still the score was done great and really shined by making the scenes more disturbing.
I really have to admit this movie deserves a good cigar and a glass of scotch while absorbing the dirty masterpiece that is Cheap.

Overall, I really enjoyed the film. Horrible, irredeemable characters are usually somewhat of a turnoff for me, especially when the director sends mixed messages and thinks we are supposed the side with one of the characters. You didn't do that, and I appreciate it. You showed the characters as the nasty people they were and never tried to make us side with any one of them. At the same time, I didn't necessarily want to see any one of the characters killed or brutalized.
Jack's vision to revolution the porn industry with snuff films was so earnest that you (or, at least, I) couldn't help but want him to succeed.
I loved the last bit - the rape scene and on. Max Force is the most sympathetic character in the movie for me (aside from his wife). Yeah, he's a horrible person. But, he's also, on some level, just a business man who didn't quite know what he had gotten into. And, does he pay for what he did! The revenge Jack and the girls serve to him was brilliant and twisted.
I really loved the soundtrack. The '60's pop-ish music was a nice contrast to the disturbing nature of the film. You chose some great songs too. And, now I've got proof that the "I'm your puppet" song exists. My friend didn't believe me.

Awesome, just awesome.
Some performances, especially at the beginning weren't all that convincing to me. Like the fight with the mother. But all in all you really got into it and you can see that you put alot of hard work in this movie. It really shows!
Im hoping to see more movies with you acting or written by you. Your performances get better each time.
Im not a "movie expert" but Im clever enough to see through the bullshit thats beeing released these days, I like how you make the movies look grainy and dark but still professional. You should direct todays movies...Then again if you did 80% of humanity would be fucked up in the head but in a positive kind of way.

This is my first "horror" film I've ever watched. I never saw "Saw" "Hostel" or anything that involved an chainsaw and a smile [except for the remake of Friday the 13th but that was more whores than horror] because the genre was Cliché.
I think this is a true horror film and I love it. In fact this has made love horror film now. I want to see "Audition", "Frontière(s)" and "ils" because there almost what this film is. Authentic.
I love the film from the trailer to Nickels coughing up blood [or really thick nutella]. Everything was great and i going recommend this to everyone i know. The "Get Lost Whore!" had me laugh so hard for some unknown reason. Finally, the characters were amazing I think they make making snuff films, they were that good.
Thank you very much for this film. I can't wait for game boys to come out and that I wish for for the absolute best. Thank you again.

Okay, I watched about 50 minutes of it. Image and sound quality aside, I thought the acting was very good from the principal actors, and I loved the dialog. You have a way with writing that seems real. Really, kudos to your writing. Now, the snuff scenes I didn't find funny and I can be easily amused at times, but it didn't work for me. What turned me off is when I realized that this was a remake of Last House on Dead End Street. There's many scenes that are taken right from that film; the part where you recruit the cameraman and you have a universal monster in the background, you recruit two girls who wear creepy masks, then another dude (the Palmer character) is upstaged by your character. etc. If this was intentional, that's fine, but it didn't do anything for me. I corresponded with Roger the last few years of his life, and he was a very interesting guy (Bukowski-esque would be the best way to describe him) and I think he would have been flattered by your remake.
Godspeed dude.

Hey, just finished watching the flick. And i have to say, it grabed me from the start and didnt let go until the credits...Loved the imagery, choice of dialoge and most of all, the plot/setting. It went well together with the low budget style film making which just added to the feel of the movie =]

Finally got around to seeing it. Over all I was very positively surprised. I didn't expect much, but the story keept me watching and it never got boring.
The one scene I really disliked was the party-at-the-hotel scene. It went on too long, didn't really contribute and had the one bad cut I really noticed (take starts too early and the actors stand around).
The special effects were pure genius. I never knew you could do so well with basically what you find around your kitchen. Sure, it only works for b/w mostly, but it was still awesome.
Some minor remarks:
-I thought the producer was in on it. I was surprised when it turned out he didn't know about the snuff being real. That they trick him should have been made more obvious.
-The whole Natalie arc was kinda pointless looking back at it. It really lead nowhere and maybe was a bit too long as a pure introduction to the producer's personality.
-The stunts were mostly bad. People don't immediately go unconscious from a rug in front of their face. The hardcore killer girl giving in to a stoned guy gently pushing her into a door was very strange too. People are not so soft. Killing, kidnapping, raping, etc are all dirty businesses. You made it look too easy, too clean.
Overall: Great work, Brad!

This film is hard for me to classify but one thing is certain: I loved this film. It has a lot of complex, compelling characters. My favorite was the director Jack Stone(Brad Jones), who is a charismatic psycho with a vision who eventially gets everyone (and me) excited to work on these projects. The rest of the cast range from great to a little below average.
The footage seems to be shot on those old video cameras. This distracting at first but over time it fits the tone of the movie. That tone being that of those old "Shot on Shitteo" movies and this might be a homage to these movies.
The music mostly comes from the fifties making some of the scenes, like the first, especially haunting (like the song at the end of The Shining: "Midnight, the Stars and You").
Overall this movie requires a great deal of suspension-of-disbelief when it comes to the sets. This is understandable if you are a regular viewer of really small indy films. But if you are a fan of great stories and believable characters then this movie is for you. In short, a 9/10 on my personal scale.

Wow. Just finished watching this, and I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or be disturbed for the bulk of the movie. Patty and Anita were creepy as hell at times, and the murder of Max's pregnant wife was actually hard to watch. It sounds stupid, and I'm not exactly a stranger to nasty movies, but something about the way they approach the killing with a childlike glee... really much better than the first half of the movie led me to expect.
You were also pretty damn scary at times, Brad.

magnificent brad, well done once again. i was really drawn in about half way into it, so for me it started off a bit slow, but once it ramped up, i couldnt stop watching.
now this is a bit tough to compare to your previous movie, freak out. i can tell you learned a bit from that, the quality really shows it. and again, you as a villain was awesome, for lack of better words. for the most part the actors were pretty good, only same concern as before when people are angry, it doesnt seem real [cept for a few bits with max and basically everything you did. you can definitely tell you wrote this by how much you were into it]. i probably prefer the plot to freak out, i just dig serial killer movies. this one seemed a lot more surreal, which is wonderful, but not my preferred cup of tea. its hard to say if i liked this one or freak out more, considering freak out was pretty damn long, it would really depend what mood im in.
again this really feels more professional than freak out by the way it was shot. my only complaints are the punches definitely seem pulled and some of the gore feels bought, if you will. but what can you do on such a budget.
cant wait to see the rest of your films. also hope you get around to making a commentary for this one as well, i like behind the scenes stuff. [also, brilliant caligula reference]
again, well done brad. you should be proud.

I have to say, I really enjoyed this film. It felt genuine and honest, something you don't get with films much these days.
The only thing that kind of made me wince was the scene where the pregnant wife of Max was killed, and the child aborted. I knew it was a doll, of course, however the camera never stayed on it too long, and it was covered in blood, so the effect was pretty gruesome. I honestly didn't think you would actually go there, even though my gut instincts told me it was a possibility. I have to say I was genuinely shocked by it.
You are a very good writer, the script was great, and you completely sold me on Jack Stone. Stone was, without a doubt, my favorite. I think Max Force comes in a close second. Is it a bad thing that I found Jack likable, and even somewhat sympathetic? Maybe it is because this is the first time I have seen you act (and was very pleasantly surprised), because I have seen so many of your movie reviews, as yourself and the cinema snob. I think that's probably it
I've been wanting to direct films myself for as long as I can remember. I haven't completed a script to date, however, because I guess i can't seem to find my "voice". Your film, however, has inspired me to keep trying, and i will definitely watch your others, if they're available.

What a delicious piece of sleaze lol. I absolutely loved this movie, and I was hooked from the very beginning. Your character is just so dark and two-faced that I think you and David were easily on par with each other. He had that "utterly unlikeable" feel where you had the "so nice there HAS to be something wrong with him" feel. I think it works even better that his behavior doesn't change much once he starts killing people as well, it makes me wonder if maybe he always was that crazy?
Absolutely great film though, I gotta show this to people.

I really like this movie!
I like it so much, that if this was out on DVD, I would buy it and it would be so worth it.
I also like it enough to actually make a video review on this.

I really enjoyed this film alot Brad it was thrilling, darkly comedic, gritty, campy and I loved the 50's/60's soundtrack anyway what year did you release this? I already watched this a couple times and I'd love to do a review on my YouTube channel when I get a chance

Brad, just finished it. So far all of your movies and work i have loved. I am becoming a huge fan of your work. I actually am directing a musical which will be my first production ever and will definatly take some tips from your style because i fucking love it.

Thats one of the best indie films I've seen all year. I loved how the camera was unfocused and dark just like the underground porn films being produced. at some points the camera work seemed a little too shaky and unfocused though

Overall I enjoyed it. The thing I liked most was Jack's attention to detail and how it was illustrated. A great director has epic attention to detail. I have posted a review on my website here: http://overlordnetwork.com/movie-reviews/horror-movie-reviews/110-review-of-cheap-by-stoned-gremlin-productions

I've watched it twice now with a budget of $10'000 I can't complain too much about picture quality. I am convinced that allot of the dark grainy as all hell scenes that were part of the overall narrative were purposely dark to mirror the tone & camera style of the snuff films themselves(don't correct me if I'm wrong). But I find it sheer genus that you pulled off such a dark and depraved story complete with the violent death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child and still maintain the overall feeling of a fun romp through the seedy back door basement of the porn industry.

The highest compliment I can award this film was that I could "smell" it. You know how you can watch a visceral movie (like Chainsaw Massacre) and you know exactly how it smells? Maybe it's just me.

This is a fun exploitation film. I dug it. Really liked the way the music created a Lynch-ian mood. I especially liked "Hello Stranger."

Great film! but this isn't for everyone.
This isn't your average run-of-the-mill "Murder/Revenge Flick".
This film asks the Question, "Does SNUFF exist"? People have been sent to prison and put to death for trying to turn this legend into a reality.
Everyone wants to take that trip to the dark side, But no one wants to be the one labeled as perverse.
This makes for an interesting morality play. Scratch that, There are absolutely NO redeeming characters in this film. Everyone in this film is a filthy worthless piece of shit.
Today, with viral video, this content can be distributed faster and people would be harder to catch.
This film just looks more to the to the legend.
Amazing job from the cast.

Brad this was fantastic. You did a great job. Some obvious problems were the handheld cam and some dark lighting but nothing a better camera and a tripod cant fix. You stole the show and the guy that played Max was excellent. I deffidently dug this film and I could see why some people would like or appreciate it. But it was awesome.

Oh my god, this was amazing. So far, out of all your films I've seen, including Hooker with a Heart of Gold (which I loved), This has got to be your most satisfying and all around well put together movie. The fact this was shot on low res video takes nothing away and actually makes me happy to see people make work on vhs or hi8 cameras. It's an untapped medium and your one of few people who's been able to use to it's full extent. From one filmmaker to another, you have my utmost respect for your art.

really great. I was sceptical at first, because I couldn't see what was going on in the opening credit sequence, but then dragged me in and kept me going. A great film, done in the low budget gritty style of great 70s horror films. You show no boundries and pull the violence off realisticly, even considering the budget, just like the classics. I am very impressed. I am used to you as the Cinema Snob, and seeing you as the ultra demented serial snuff filmmaker is a great treat. Good job.

I...don't know how to feel about this movie.
On the one hand, it was extremely well done. The writing is great, there are some good laughs, and Brad and David are genuinely compelling as the leads. For what it is, it's awesome.
On the other hand, it's a movie about making snuff films and getting away with it. The death scenes are believable and disturbing and the characters are monsters. There are no heroes here. I kind of feel bad about liking it.
I think you have succeeded sir.

It is strange, michael korsfor although this dour woman, the mere “assistant clerk of accounting operations”,michael kors wedges would appear to have no exalted title nor position, michael kors swimweareveryone in your office is deferential to her. Even your hard-charging, take-not-the-prisoners boss, michael kors store Bob Gummidge, speaks to her in the most polite and civil tongue, occasionally even flirting with her(!), this despite the fact that she looks like the dyspeptic French bulldog, squat and jowly, michael kors clothing with the half-lidded, vaguely mammalian eyes.

My own closet is inordinately michael kors watch with menswear-inspired heels and uber-impractical platforms.michael kors bags It’s definitely time for me to concentrate on acquiring more practical kors by michael kors for everyday wear and general errand running. Plus, flats, michael kors handbags on salewhile not my faves aesthetically, are so much more practical for summertime outings to the park than michael kormy usual stiletto-sandal crushes tend to allow.

I was surprised that I enjoyed this film, I didn't go in expecting to hate it or anything but I thought I would probably be unsure of how to feel but I came out of it really liking this film. There were some scenes in the first part were the acting is a bit off but after those few scenes in the beginning the acting got better and it was very believable. I was defiantly interested during this movie and kept watching because I really wanted to see what would happen next and how things would turn out. Some of the scenes toward the end did drag on somewhat but it didn't bother me to much. I did get somewhat annoyed at times when the music was to loud so I couldn't hear what people were saying. I don't know if that was intentional or not but that is the only thing that bothered me at times. I like how it was filmed because it made it seem more real and when the rape scene happened I was like HOLY SHIT because it defiantly wasn't what I was expecting to happen but I like that some scenes really surprised me. The acting was really well done and I enjoyed listening to what everyone had to say. Also the music was really great and I thought it strangely went well with the scenes. I can't compare it to your other movies because I haven't seen them yet but after seeing this I plan to watch them. One scene I really like is at the end in black and white when the girls are just standing over Derek as he lay on the ground bleeding. All in all I really liked the movie and would defiantly watch it again. I had a fun time watching it and never got bored.

wow, you were right, this is sleazy. You call it campy, but it seemed very real to me. VERY disturbing...but, um, tasteful? Not something I'll watch again anytime soon due to the dark nature of the content.
After that's said, you are one hell of a writer. This is high quality material. Acting was great. You kinda got a Johnny Depp think going on(I hope that's a compliment). The only other one of yours that I saw was Game Boys, so I'll have to get to the others now.
GREAT JOB!

Just watched it for the first time. Very well done. I've only seen Paranoia and this, but I'll definitely get to watching your other films soon.
I thought the characters were believable and well written. You stole the show. The rest of the cast was really good too. Pretty ballsy subject, but you pulled it off well. The soundtrack was surprisingly fitting. I don't know if I'll watch it again, due to the disturbing content, but well done. You sure know how to make great films.

You sure know where to point the camera! The music was too loud to hear the dialogue at point. Some of the acting was understandably poor but for the most part the leads were awesome. I'm glad you established all the characters including the victims for the most part. The Nintendo shirts and Atari posters didn't even detract! I'd agree with an earlier comment - showing everything might not have been the best as you couldn't afoard special effects to really trick us, but the effects (foetus aside) were good while they lasted especially the creepy masks! I'm unsure why Max didn't see him being killed coming or try to go to the cops or anything and his death seemed a little unnatural, but Derik's death was awesome Brad truely creeped me the fuck out with his 'first kills.'

Just wondering, isn't killing a gay character a bit homophobic, also calling him a "whore"?
Reply to this
Just wondering, you aren't against people like that right? Brad, I am really scared right now..
Reply to this
Are you being freakin serious? Jack killed Derek Diamond and Karl Kox because they were ripping off his work, not because they were gay. And even if Jack was homophobic, he's the fucking villain. You aren't supposed to root for him or agree with him, he's a horrible person. You might as well have said that I'm against women because a couple of females died in this movie.
