"Avatar" Review
So is this 250 million dollar picture worth it, or is it just an expensive fake rolex?

I'm kind of reluctant to ask you this as I see you really enjoyed the movie and the CGI, but I have two itching questions to ask about this movie: did Cameron exaggerated with the eyecandy CGI like George Lucas did in the prequel trilogy to awe people and would story still be amazing if it had special effects like in the original Star Wars Trilogy or let's say Neverending Story.
I still think one of the best movies of 2009 would be Inglorious Basterds and that would be because of it's well written story. I wonder if Avatar would hold water without the effects, but still big James Cameron fan so I'm glad the latest movie still gets praise even from you Brad.

I liked Avatar a lot as well. At first, I thought it felt a little slow and a little preachy, but thinking about it more, it wasn't that overbearing. It was good to see that it never got too sentimental either, which is something I can be very picky about. One of the few films that actually lives up to the hype or close to it. Cameron knows how to use CGI appropriately and not just throw it around like its a joke. Terminator 2 has better CGI than most films made these days because Cameron knows how it should be used in the proper context.
I remember Brad calling it CGI: The Movie. I think that was at Cinema Wasteland if I remember correctly.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I think Sigourney Weaver was almost the best part of the movie. Then again, I do have a soft spot for angry women scientists though. Without the CGI, I thought the movie would have been adequate just on that merit alone, but in this particular case the graphics did make it. I saw it in 3D too and it was worth every penny. Great review, even though I though you gave the movie just a little too much praise.
Also, was I the only one trying to spot a nipple-slip every once and a while?

Surely we are in the end times!
Just kidding. Great review Brad.

Ooh! What about "Smurfahontas"?
Can I just add myself to the list of people saying "really?"? 'Cuz I just saw it a few hours ago and already I'm having trouble remembering anything about it--apart from the visuals, of course...

I would have like it better if it wasn't for two things
1 the na'vi
2 The ending
The na'vi are such stereotypes, they have no real culture, no art, no stories, nothing, they attack outsides for no reason, hate anyone who doesn't conformed to their way of live ect. And Yet we're suppost to root for them. Everything they do is perfet and right and it's so annoying I WANTED them to be kill offed
And the ending seee above, the Na'vi are right and humans are wroung and eviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilllll!!!11ONEONE, it should have ended with peaceful coexistence, but NOOOOOOOOO the Na'vi get to kick the humans off the planet and doom billions to die on Earth.

God dammit Brad, I don't want to like this movie! I haven't seen it yet, but I'm probably going to because someone is going to drag me along. I want to hate it because of what it stands for, the end of special effects as I know it. I'm a beginning independent filmmaker and make up effects artist. I hate CGI more than you do because it effects my job market. I never felt threatened by CGI until this movie came out. I know that for the most part, CGI is crap. But if Cameron is doing it right, there are others that will follow. The technology will keep getting better to the point that even filmmakers that do a shitty job with it, will start making acceptable stuff. Soon, my kind will be extinct, but I'm not going down without a fight.

I liked it. But the "Dances with Wolves" thing annoyed me. I came out of it thinking, "Amazing effects and world they created. I just wish they trusted me enough to give me an unique story." Cameron is an amazing director, I'll even forgive him for "Titanic" and I'll forgive him for the preachy and cliched plot, in what was otherwise an incredible experience.
Reply to this
I just saw Avatar and I totally agree with your assessment. I saw the movie today and was floored by how well the effects were handled. Cameron still has it.
The story wasn't original but I don't care, if you tell a familiar story well enough who cares if the story isn't original? This is classic James Cameron storytelling, and if you don't like it you probably didn't like any of his other movies. He displayed his complete mastery of special effects CGI and otherwise. Another movie that used CGI to it's best effect this year was District 9 and there are plenty of parallels to be drawn between the two movies.
Bottom line, if you have a quarter billion dollars to invest in a movie, James Cameron is your man. I'll be seeing it again in the theater hopefully in 3D. See Avatar if you haven't and District 9 will be out on DVD shortly.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I hope to see it tomorrow (but lord knows there is just as much crap that might prevent that), and hope to have a review up before Christmas.
I am still leery at the film will live up to the hype. Cameron is a talented filmmaker, but any time I hear the words "love story" around him I fear. The only romances he wrote that work is in THE ABYSS and TRUE LIES, and those are fairly dysfunctional relationships. Everything else, from TERMINATOR to TITANIC has been weak at best in the writing. Thankfully, everything save TITANIC is been able to survive this little problem.
Reply to this
Don't worry, the love story is superfluous but I thought it was appropriate to the story (If I were given a choice between Segourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez (HOT but probably gay in this role), and alien princess I think I'd go the same way). Don't listen to the hype see it for yourself.
Watch the movie and then voice your opinion.
Reply to this
It's like the matrix, you have to see it for yourself...
And you know there will be the "James Cameron's Penis Eclipses the Sun, Ultimate Director's Cut Edition" with all the shit they cut out. I just wish there would be a theatrical release...
Reply to this
Just came back from seeing it exactly 8 min. ago. I had the same reaction....went from 'Meh' to 'Holy Fuck' in a nanosecond.
The story was def. in thinly-veiled,tree-hugging, Lib. territory, but that's fine (I'm a lib. anyway). (BTW, I ,too, was thinking 'Pocahontas'). Anyway, it was still a nice ride
Reply to this
Nothing about the story really bothered me. War stories can't really be all that original, anyway. It was pretty much the definitive blockbuster movie. Unlike Treansformers 2 or similar films, this one did it right. The story may have been somewhat cliche, but it was solid, without plot holes or characters acting out of character. He also didn't write it to the lowest common denominator with a bunch of shitty ghetto humor or T&A or just bad jokes and shit.
The 'love story' is that, but it's more like the one in Last Samurai. She pretty much hates his guts when they meet.
"The na'vi are such stereotypes, they have no real culture, no art, no stories, nothing, they attack outsides for no reason, hate anyone who doesn't conformed to their way of live ect. And Yet we're suppost to root for them. Everything they do is perfet and right and it's so annoying I WANTED them to be kill offed
And the ending seee above, the Na'vi are right and humans are wroung and eviiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilllll!!!"
Maybe you weren't paying attention, but the Na'Vi weren't hostile until the humans gave them a reason to be. They had a school and were teaching them english. But the humans were destroying things, cutting down the forest, killing animals, etc. Obviously not a very friendly thing to do.
They kicked the humans off the planet because they didn't want their planet to end up like the doomed planet. The humans were the ones that fucked up.
Granted, I don't buy into the idea that we'll manage to totally destroy our planet. We'll probably wise up. But you say that the humans are doomed to die, yet they can't even breathe the air on that planet. Surely if they have similar issues on Earth, they can solve them, since they solved them on Pandora. Regardless, they were obviously more interested in money than saving their race. Not really great attributes. I don't feel sorry for them at all.
Also, they were starting to warm up more to the humans until they started blowing shit up and ripping up their sacred trees and shit. The humans weren't TRYING to live in peace and harmony with the NaVi, they wanted to get rid of them. There is no peaceful coexistence possible there.
Anyway, I loved the movie, but I pretty much knew I would for the last couple of years. I was hoping I wasn't just biased. I've now heard a lot of reviews from a lot of people who had not expected much from the film who were then blown away by it. I've been waiting for it to come out for years. Now that it's out, it was everything I had hoped it would be.
Now I have to get one of those 3D-Ready DLP TV's and a PS3 so I can watch this fucker in 3D at my house. The hardware is really not that expensive at all. The TV's are actually cheaper than most bigscreen LCD's... Tho it'll probably not be out until this time next year

Haven´t seen it yet, but by now I guess I´m gonna like this movie. I like "dances with wolves", heck, I even like Pocahontas (yeah, I know... at least I don´t like Ferngully). So if it really looks that awesome, I´m pretty sure it´ll appeal to me.

But that's okay, I'm sure it would've blew me away the same it did for you Brad. My favorite theater just got equipped with some 3D and they're showing the movie with it. Now I'm still hyped with anticipation!

Hello Brad, I was wondering if you have talked to Spoony about Avatar yet and if they conversation had changed any minds concerning the quality of the film?

I was watching Charlie Rose the other day, and he was interviewing James Cameron when they showed the clip with Stephen Lang doing the R. Lee Ermey bit. Rose made mention of the fact that Lang looked familiar but didn't know his body of work. Apparently, Lang is like that. This is strange, considering he's played so many roles, from Ike Clanton in "Tombstone" (maybe his best role) to the evil scientist in "Project X." He was also great in his role as David Abrahams in the cult-1980's cop drama "Crime Story," with Dennis Farina, who was fresh off the Chicago Police force and new to acting. If you've never seen that series, it's worth buying or at least renting off Netflix, because it was like "Miami Vice," except no stubble sporting Don Johnson. It was also set in the 60s, with a great soundtrack to back it up.

Ah, year end spring cleaning's a bitch, ain't it? I feel your pain man, can't see the floor of my room, either...
I entered the movie with no idea at all that it would be so long. Imagine my surprise when I checked the time at the end - it didn't feel like 3 hours at all and I actually wanted more!
Like you said the CGI was amazing. I've got a bad habit of splitting my brain during such movies to look out for obviously fake scenes or characters but after about 1/2 hour, I was just sitting back and enjoying the whole experience throughly. My favourite scene has got to be when Jake first learned how to fly. Glorious...

I really loved the movie too. Though, if there is one complaint I have, it's the central antagonist. Because, he's the kind of villain, that you want to see die at every turn, but he's so epically badass, you can't help but admire him. And that's the thing, I like him, oddly enough, I just wish the film had more screen time of him, provide a little more motivation for the character, beyond 'Grr, Naavi are savages! Grr!"

Stephen Lang also played the nosy reporter in "Manhunter" (1986). I love the scene where he is put in a wheelchair and gets lit on fire by The Tooth Fairy. That scene actually made it on "Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments"!

Good movie, not groundbreaking. I like that Cameron could devote so much of a movie to exploring a new world before explosions start.
I didn't see anything to suggest that the 'Unobtainium' was necessary for human survival. The talk about a ruined world just referred to how Earth's biosphere compared to theirs, not that our world needed a rock for survival. (Or that we'd entrust some company for it, and give up if we needed it that badly)

Okay, I am SOOO GLAD you mentioned the similarity with between this movie and Fern-Gully. I was trying to explain the plot being very similar to that of Ferngully, but no one knew what I was talking about.
I like this movie, but if it weren't for the effects, I'm pretty sure I'd not be as thrilled by it. The plot is just very thin, of course and you kind of knew going in what was going to happen. I like movies with more spontaneity. James Cameron is a genius though, regardless.

I think I'll break the good mood and say this is one of the worst films I've seen in 2009. I really really disliked t more than most movies I've seen this year. The only good portion of the film was the CGI, and that on it's own was nowhere near enough to save the film for me. The world it created was far from immersive enough for me to be interested in it. Although I wasn't crazy about the film, District 9 created a far more interesting Sci-Fi world than this did. Now I think my beef with the plot goes without saying. It's the most uninspired piece of writing ever from the actual plot through to dialogue. I think it's the first Cameron film in my mind to have characters take a back seat to effects. Aliens, Terminator, Terminator 2, even Titanic. I hated Titanic, but the characters did come before the effects. This was the first Cameron film where I couldn't give two shits about the characters. And its allegories and allusions are being slammed over your head, which is also very tiring and ill thought out. Most people who take issue with my opinion have retaliated by saying it has an environmentalist message. Well for one, that's obvious it's not like I didn't realize that. But also, the fact that it has a green message that really is on the elementary level is overshadowed by the fact that it cost like 250 000 000 to make, which probably caused more environmental issues than it cured. This is the same issue I had with 2012 and it's budget/environmental message. The lastly there's the 3D which just reassured my opinion that 3D is the most pointless thing in the world. I took my glasses off occasionally during the film and I could barely tell the difference between the 2D and 3D besides the blurred image. The only moments when the 3D was significant was when some spears fell at the end and when they show the holographic globe in the control room. Just goes to show in my opinion that good old 2D filmmaking can never be surpassed.

Oh and not to mention the Na'vi which could possibly be the worst aliens in the history of cinema. Considering the fact that Cameron once worked with the apex of cinema's extraterrestrial life, he could've done far better.

I really can't add anything new about the movie that hasn't been said already. I found the story completely cliched (and mildly racist), the visuals were good (even if most of the made no sense), and the acting was acceptable. It wasn't great, it wasn't horrible, it was meh. Over all I give it a C.
Here's where I'm going to say something that I disagree with most people on. I saw this movie with 3-D, and it almost ruined it for me. Yes, it was the best integrated 3-D I've ever seen, but it was still wildly distracting to me. I MUCH preferred it in 2-D.

I saw it in 3D a few weeks ago and I really didn't think it was anything special. The 3D didn't work very well for me, maybe I was too offcenter or whatever, but I really didn't feel like it was a good movie. I've seen cartoons with better characters.
Also nobody is bothered by the fact that not one of the damn blue monkeys thought to catch the big bird by flying over him? Really? In all these years of watching it not ONE of the Na'vi warriors thought to himself "hey, how about I jumped it from behind?" wow.

Maybe I read a little too much Warhammer 40k, but I simply cannot believe that humanity would honestly show one iota of mercy to sapient aliens. I mean what in our history leads anyone to believe that we will or should be nice to them. I blame the anthropomorphism in Avatar and District9 for adding too many human emotional feature to the aliens in order to make them relatable to the audience. I understand that is the point of these movies, but didn't the golden age of scifi already give us a thousand thinly vealed allegories for racism by equating some downtrodden group with aliens or mutants or whatever.

I could care less about Avatar, for three huge reasons.
1.It's directed by James Cameron. Now, that may sound like bias, but it's not because James Cameron is a bad director. It's just that he can't POSSIBLY top Terminator 2. That movie is my all time favorite movie ever. I have been watching that movie religiously since toddler age. Avatar is a hype machine that will immediately suffer due to the fact that James Cameron directed something far better. This is just off of my love for Terminator 2 alone. I haven't even seen Avatar, and I refuse to watch it unless stripped down to 2D, regular TV screen, regular DVD.
2.2001: A Space Odyssey puts Avatar to shame. Avatar is considered a huge step up in special effects. Ya... right. 2001 is one of the greatest special effects movies ever. I still have not found a movie to strike me with as much awe as 2001. That said, Terminator 2 was also a great Special effects movie. In fact, that's the only movie where I've actually BELIEVED the CGI. I never saw it as CGI, but instead as liquid metal. 2001 is also the greatest movie ever made, and my second favorite movie ever. People should not fork their money to go see this in Imax 3D. Instead, they should be shown 2001 in Imax (Think about how incredible that would be).
3.It looks like a video game. To be fair, these "special effects" that are so mesmerizing, look like just a better looking video game. And speaking of immersing yourself in a world unlike your own, video games are much better than Avatar at that. One of my all time favorite video games is Half-life 2. That is a game where I honestly feel like I am Gordon Freeman.
If Avatar can:
Beat Terminator 2 in terms of action, messages, humor, and rewatch value
Beat 2001 in awe inspiring visuals, sounds, and quality
and Beat Half-life 2 in terms of immersion, story line, and scale.
Then I will respect it. Those seem like very high standards, but consider the fact that this is the number one best selling movie of all time. If it has that honor, it must stand up to some of the best, right?

Jan Jacob Kotte joined Philips as a young man and soon got involved in machine design for these type of activities. The first "Loeftaffon" record turntables to be synchronised with non-Philips film projectors were produced in small numbers in a laboratory workshop (Called Proeffabriek). In the early 1930s the first models of Philips projection machines and Philips-Miller sound recording units were designed and constructed. Kotte was the ace designer right from the start, guided by capable senior engineers like Hardenberg, Nillesen and others. The famous, very modern engineered Film Projectors FP5, 6 and 7 were introduced around 1937, and still produced basically unaltered thirty years later!.......

t feels fist-pumpingly good to see an arrow hit the right spot and heartbreaking to see an innocent Na'vi plummet to his death. Sheer adrenalin all around, throughout. This is an experience you need to go for, because words do not do it justice -- and neither will DVDs.

The movie failed to impress me twofold. The two most important things for me in a story, Avatar completely sucked at.
One, the characters were way to flat, I can't remember crap about Jake and Na'Vi princess.
Two, the black and white morality bothered me on a deep, deep level, I hate that, removing moral complexity in a "realistic" work is shooting yourself in the foot before you begin. The Na'Vi were portrayed as unambiguously good, and the humans evil dog raping asssholes, it annoyed me.

my god man...really? This has to be the movie that has pissed me off the most and i spent money to go see fucking eragon.
People have already commented on why this movies' plot was so irritating so i won't go into it but i will go on to say that i hate James Cameron. Not just because of this movie but his other big hits were Titanic where he basically just remade one of the other titanic movies and added your typical uninspired teenaged star crossed romance then threw money at it and in Aliens, he took H.R. Gigers' alien design and expanded nothing of the universe but instead made a shoot em' up out of it then threw more money at the special effects guys. The man is a crook, unoriginal to the core.
He is the Michael Bay of sci-fi

I think its ironic how you love this movie and spoony absolutely hated it. I think what it boils down to is whether or not you had high expectations and believed the hype. I get the impression that spoony truly did believe the hype and was severely disappointed to the point of anger. It seems like spoony hates all the flaws and you seem to overlook them. I wonder if spoony enjoys exploitation films ...

The key of the success of Wii is it isn't chasing fantasic picture but to improve the flexiblily of the operation,so it attract players of all ages. So more and more people begin to like Wii full of simple joys and begin to find Will which is fittable for the entainment of the whole family and can be played by the old and the young. It is like an emotional return of those who have taken the wrong road for ten years and suddenly everything becomes clear to some extent, but the result is certainly not driven by the low price.

Heh... well, I guess it's a different experience watching it in the comfort of your own home rather than in a huge theater. Just try renting/buying this move and stay interested then. I lost it the moment the Navi used their hair; that's when I realized I needed to watch something less stupid.

Good luck getting people behind this one. Though you make some VERY fascinating points, youre going to have to do more than bring up a few things that may be different than what weve already heard. What are trying to say here? What do you want us to think? It seems like you cant really get behind a unique thought. Anyway, thats just my opinion.Christmas Gifts Monogram Canvas Damier Canvas Louis Vuitton louis vuitton timberlands
