The Big Box: "The House of the Devil"

What's this?  An episode of "The Big Box" spotlighting a new release?  Who would have ever thought that would happen!

Also, coming next week on the site, I shall be interviewing "Comin At Ya 3-D" star Tony Anthony!! Very cool!

    Great review, Vic.

I love a good random 80's 'doing things around the house' montage.

And the lead chick in this totally looks like an early 80's 'final girl'. Kind of like Margot Kidder or Amy Steel.

Great review Vic, I think we all sometimes want to return in the 80s with it's music and movies but not games. Fan of the 8bit era but love the new era.

But horror movies really lack suspense and attachment to the main characters this days. They are just cannon fodder for the slasher and it's clear they want us to feel great when a douchebag character is killed that we start rooting for the killer.

Great episode and awesome throwback movie.

Actually, the term "Gorgon" is a reference from Clash of the Titans, as well as being tied to Greco-Roman lore. Medusa, the woman-serpant with a reptillian hair-do, and a gaze that that can turn mortal men to stone, was Queen of the Gorgons.

This movie is neither shitty, nor cheesy.

If it has anything over all the other '80's throwback' horror films of late is that it's played totally straight, with no referential irony or winking at the audience.

It's a fine little chiller than that on its own.

Well Pepsi has come out with "throwback," a resurrection of the classic Pepsi and Mountain Dew logos on their cans, a huge dose of nostalgia for me. It's awesome to see that the big box has been resurrected again.

My brother used to own a big box copy Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things. It's funny because the box says that it's rated R but it's definitely not uncut and the movie was released as PG. I'm guessing that what gave it the R rating was the trailer to Faces of Death.

I'm gonna have to see House of the Devil. Whoever made it certainly got the 80s look just right including the film used.

Oh yeah and I loved Jillian's 80s montage. That was adorable!!!

AWESOME! AWESOME! AWESOME! This is exactly what I was hoping to see on The Big Box! Plus, I loved the "Doin' Stuff Montage" set to "Touch Me (All Night Long)" by Wish, featuring Fonda Rae. (I have it on my iPod.) THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL is such a perfect horror movie, a revitalizing breath of foul air from all the remakes/re-imaginings/reboots of classic horror movies. And this VHS packaging (an Amazon.com exclusive bundle with the DVD by the way) really goes along with the homage of the movie itself. As The Cinema Snob might say, "Did you say BRUTES AND SAVAGES?" Big Box VHS FOREVER!

I hope to meet Ti West, Jocelin Donahue, and others involved with THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL so that I can get the VHS autographed by them!

As I was watching this film I was wondering if maybe Samantha Hughes is a reference to John Hughes. He was an obviously important icon of the eighties for sure.

I just got done watching this movie. I understand what they were going for but it just took too long to set everything up. This movie could have been 30 minutes long and created the same effect. They did a good job setting the time period and will agree, they did it in an unironic way. That I can appreciate. What I can't appreciate is how this movie fritters away its time. There is building suspense then there is padding. House of the Devil is mostly padding. I didn't hate the movie but it took too long to get to the point. Oh, and that ending bothered me. That same gun blew the face off her friend. But somehow she survives. And for being such a likable character, I really hated how in the end the devil wins. I think a lot of people like this movie because the current state of horror is so pathetic. But liking a movie in spite of other movies from the genre isn't really liking a movie.

I love old suspense movies from 1962's The Haunting to Black Christmas, but House of Devil suceeded in only one endeavor: mimicking a bad 70's movie. It was so much like a bad 70's movie in every way, from meandering plot to silly conclusion that it felt rather pointless to make. I digress, I do admire how they released it in a big box format. That's going the extra mile.

Reproduced from my Netflix review of this film:

I really wish I could like this movie. Its very VERY well made. The acting is excellent (a rarity for low budget horror), the setting and costumes are fantastically 80s, and when the movie hits its stride its choice cinema. The problem is the length of time it takes to hit its stride. I understand that they were trying to build suspense, however there is a fine line between drawing out a shot to increase anticipation and lingering on EVERY shot. I wasn't tense, I wasn't in suspense, I was just bored. If I wasn't worried about missing some sudden action I would have fast forwarded through about 80% of this film, and I wouldn't have missed a thing. So, for everything other than the pacing and the editing I would give this film a solid 5 stars. But needlessly long shots taken to the Nth degree drop this film to about 3.
    --------------

To continue off of that, I do recommend this film, it is awesome-sauce in thirty forms. Just keep in mind that there is a whole lot of lingering shots designed to draw suspense (that don't really succeed, at least for me).
