Brad Interviews Tony Anthony (Part 3 of 3)
In the 3rd and final part of my interview with Tony Anthony, Tony talks about his departure from acting, his ongoing role as a producer, and the current and future state of 3-D technology. A "Caligula" reference even gets thrown into the mix.
Wow glad I heard the end of the interview. You did a great job Brad interviewing Mister Tony Anthony and everything, I mean everything he talked about was so relevant about the 3D boom and dying out and this third Renaissance of it. I get it now why 3D wasn't a big success in the 80s because lot's of cinema's refused to install the new technology, because it was too expensive. Like he said Italy refused to put in the new screen. Also on anaglyphic 3d it looked awful on old VHs and on DVDs as I saw.
Now people will buy this 3D TVs that probably will make the experience more bearable. I for one will not get one and tell you why.
Avatar brought the big money because of the 3D and how it immersed the audience. Also the tickets were more expensive justified by the quality. The problem is the following movies that will follow the 3D craze won't bring the same immersible quality that Avatar brought. They are just converted to 3D not filmed entirely in 3D, if I got it right. People will see that the extra cash they give won't be justified if they see a hat thrown at you. If they don't offer the same quality/experience the 3D trend will die out again. Really now, it's a trend to get more money but if they don't offer the visuals Avatar had using 3D than people won't buy it and the studious and now the cinemas and TV manufacturers will suffer.
Also interesting to hear almost every movie can be transformed in 3D by the technique Mister Anthony was describing. Caligula, from what footage Brad provided, looks 3D ready. I can't thank enough Brad and Mister Tony Anthony for this wonderful, informative and history filled interview.

This is really interesting hearing it from the beast's mouth what the buzz is, allthough I do not like 3D anything to make people enjoy movies isn't all that bad, great stuff!

I'm not big on 3d movies and Tony nailed it right on the head why. They set out to bring another layer of immersion but time and again fail to pay out on the experience advertised. The 3d is generally a gimmick (minus a few films that do it correctly) and as an at home presentation it's still stone age (anaglyphic) head ache inducing torture.
If I could get the quality that the idea of 3d represents I would love 3d movies, but because I have been burned on it so so much I have been very stubborn in NOT seeing anything 3d anymore, its just to painful.
That being said, Tony's enthusiasm about the 3d boom does help bring new life to the ideal. His promos for the reinvention of "Coming at ya" show what you would want to see from a 3d movie happening quite often in the promos alone. His reinvention with the NOIR 3d theyre doing is what it says it is I would definitely be game to see that. It looks amazing.
I have to end this, though, with one disagreement I have. While yes, the tech is there to convert anything to 3d, this doesnt mean that anything SHOULD be in 3d. To say or assume such an idea is quite silly. Yes, it will take a shifting of directorial mindset to make 3d movie making anything more then a gimmick, but more so just the type of movie can make 3D tacked on as well.
I guess what I'm saying is I couldnt see ANY movie in 3d, there are movies that are dramatically, thematically, and theatrically superb, but that doesnt mean theyd be good in a 3d format- or even work very well for that matter from a cinematic stand point.
Those are my thoughts. This interview was great, hope your able to do more of these.

If having a constant barrage of things being shot, thrown, prodded and pushed into your face is what you want then that is what you shall receive.
The effects come right up to your nose.
The new wave of "3-D" films have pretty much shunned this type of gimmickery and delivered nothing in the process.
Comin' At Ya! embraces its gimmick.
It knows what it is.

I am probably more excited about seeing Comin' at Ya! than most of the 3D movies that are coming our way in the months ahead. Awesome interview Brad, maybe you can invite Tony back at some point in the future when the western boxed set comes out. I'm sure he has tons of stories about those movies!
