I've had the first REC on DVD for ages but have just never gotten around to watching it.
If anyone wants more great Spanish horror they should pick up the set of TV movies called SIX FILMS TO KEEP YOU AWAKE.
These hour-long TV movies are better than just about every Hollywood piece of shit that's come out in the past five years.

Actually, Alex de la Iglesia direct one of the films in this series. It's a very creepy SHINING-like number called THE BABY'S ROOM.
He's much more restrained in this than you would expect, and he delivers some of the best scares I've seen in a long time.
Actually, if I remember rightly the director of REC directed one of them as well.

I wasn't fond of the Baby's Room. It had great creepy moments in the beginning but as soon as I saw where the movie was going, it ruined it for me. But hey, that was just my experience with it

I saw Quarantine a year ago, really was just a gimmick for me, better said the pustular crap horror has gone this days by trying to combine The Blair Witch Project gimmick, with the 28 Days Later zombies and the gore from Saw. Funny enough the elements it borrows are all from great movies, even the first Saw is pretty good, but the result is forgettable.
I still wonder why people say Rec is better. What's the difference since I hear they are almost the same? Who knows maybe the atmosphere and acting in Rec are better.
Also from all the POV camera movies I've seen Cloverfield, Diary of the Dead, Qurantine, Blair Witch Project 2(not that much POV) and Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch Project is still the best one in the genre that I've seen.

I agree with pretty much everything you say (especially the part about the bit with the kids being stupid), but I did enjoy the film. I thought the direction they took the story in made up for the shortfall in it's execution.

I definitely prefer this movie over Diary of the Dead or the Zombie Diaries... Even Survival of the Dead! It was a fun experience watching REC 2. It's funny that you mentioned that the flick looked like a video game because the whole swat vs zombies scene reminded me of the "4th Survivor" mini game from Resident Evil 2.

[REC] scared the crap out of me. I LOVED that movie. But I have to say, it's probably not very good (Spoony did a review of Quarantine and most of his points apply to [REC] as well).
[REC] 2 however ... that was a piece of shit.

I pretty much agree with your review, Brad. I enjoyed Rec 2 whilst watching it, but the more i thought about it afterwards the less i liked it...It had some good moments, but overall was nowhere near as intense as Rec.
We'll probably review it on the next Revolving Video...whenever the hell that will be haha.

Demons? Well, I have not seen Rec. I saw Quarentine, which, I must admit, I liked. I especially like the lead actress. Yum! In Q they hinted that some crazed border from Massachusetts who was renting a room in the attic was in fact breeding rats for the creation of a Mega-version of Rabies. Why? Well, I don't know. Maybe he was a demon and demons sometime do bad things. I would watch a Q2. But would feel very cheated if it jumped the shark (nuked the fridge) by saying that it was all on acount of supernatural demonic forces that spouted pig latin and shyed away from crosses and crucifixes.

Great!! You had to bring up Demons 1&2, 2 movies that gave me nightmares for weeks. You've got to review those because their good examples of good gore horror flicks.

I love ya, Brad, but I've got to tell you I'm disappointed that you didn't notice that it is pretty clear in the first [rec] that it was demonic possession. I think this was changed in Quarantine, but in [rec] it is clear by the end that it is a demonic possession that has been turned into a virus through the priest's experiments.

How was that clear?
The way i understood the first movie was that it was a virus and the priest confused it with demonic possession and caused the whole mess because instead of bringing her to a hospital he tried to exorcise the girl. I can't remember anything in the first movie that hinted to it really being a case of demonic possession.
I just saw Rec 2 and i absolutely agree with Brad's review. The jump scares were totally ineffective, repetitive and pointless and i too didn't give a shit about what happened to the characters at all.

It was heavily hinted at when they were reviewing the priest's tapes.
He (the priest) explained that he didn't believe it was demons and he tried to study it as a virus to disprove the possession. By the end, he figures out that there is something bigger at play and that the "virus" really is a case of demonic power coming into the mortal realm. So yeah, the first REC hinted at the demonic possession plot pretty heavily.

The whole 'demons' thing was definitely hinted at in the first movie with the clippings all over the walls, many of them had religious imagery and undertones - though I wouldn't have pointed to the infected and said "Demons!!!" The rabies thing is the heavily hinted at cause in the first flick, but the religious connection is there at the end.

I thought [REC] was one intense and creepy ride of a horror film. So I'll have to check out [REC 2] just to see if I feel the same way about it. I am getting more than a little sick and tired of that POV-style camera strategy in all these movies. It's time to come up with a new technique, people.

I enjoyed REC 2, and I saw it more like a parody of the first one, just like Evil Dead 2 was to Evil Dead. I mean, I think that, since it was impossible to repeat the impact of the first one, the directors just chose to do an over-the-top sequel.
I really thought the comedy was intended, and coming back to Evil Dead 2, I found some similarities between the two movies. The structure is quite the same and some of the scenes seem to be ripped off Raimi's movie (the friendly fire scene, for example).
So much people same to hate this movie in Spain, and most of them use the low credibility factor as a reason. Come on, this is not a "serious" movie. When Angela appears, they even spoof about the imporance of having a camera.
