"A Nightmare on Elm Street" Review
Brad and Jerrid sit down to talk the Platinum Dunes' remake of "A Nightmare on Elm Street."
Also, if you haven't checked out the epicness of the Snob/Ted brawl, do give it a watch below. I think I may have cracked two ribs. But I don't know if it's Ted's pain or the Snob's.

If we want them to go away, we should just stop going. It's that simple.

I might take a look at it but you can never go wrong with a classic. I don't watch horrors movies because they follow the same stereotypes and format so much that you kind of get tired of seeing the same stuff but just in another movie. Know what I mean?

I'm actually glad you enjoyed this flick and didn't bash it JUST BECAUSE Bays' name is on it. Freddy is an EXCELLENT character and I've been a fan since 86'. Like you said, it could have been SO BAD but actually is good!
Reply to this
That's just it. A lot of people like you have been fans of the originals and those movies are 'sacred' to them. So when you have Bay come in and try to cash in on these franchises by making forgetable remakes is incredible BLASPHAMY! This is the reason I personally avoided all the Bay remakes until this one. I went in expecting the worst and was pleasantly surprised, and a little creeped out...but in a good way.

You said it...I watched this movie expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised. TBH, in regards to the other Platinum Dunes remakes (The Chainsaws, Friday, Ammityville, The Unborn etc.) I had no clue Bay was even involved! Personally I rather enjoyed the first TxChainMass remake but the others were pretty bad...This movie, was good..damn good...despite being a PD film and having Bays' name attached to it..

I actually liked chainsaw remakes and Friday the 13-th remake(thought got to agree this one is pretty forgetful). Will definitely check out this one, loved the original series, thanks for review

I liked this film and for the exact reasons that you did
1 it's sleazy
2 it's dark
3 it's not Freddy's Nightmares Freddy it's FREDDY FUCKING KRUGER
I will admit when i heard that bay was producing this I was a skeptic. Simple fact Robert Englund is the man but Jackie Earle Haley did a fantastic job in this film, the make up was great the effects were awesome the fact that you couldn't tell right away when they were asleep kicked ass. The homages they did were just right. The "wet dream" comment made me cringe though
I'm not going to give much away because like you said it should be seen. You Mr Jones surprised me, especially because of the reply you did to spoony's tweet about never going to see it.
great review

You know, I'll say this, the movie scared me, but like every single damn "horror movie" does, with shock scares. Yeah, I jumped. But you know, I also jump when Toast pops out in the early morning.
So whoop dee doo, Nightmare on Elm Street does what Toast can do.

This sort of opinion is just stupid. When you go to see a horror film; if you go in saying that the whole genre is shit and nothing on screan is "truly" horrifying except artsy-fartsy psychological thrillers then the movie is not the problem. You can easily do the same thing with any other genre as well (action is to cheesy, romance is too sappy, fantasy is too unrealistic, etc.). Seriously, if you invest into a genre hating it then your opinion of anything from that genre is worthless unless you are attacking the genre as a whole.
Speaking of genres and appeal; the slasher genre really is not my kind of thing but the Nightmare On Elms Street may be a good starting point. After hearing you guys talk about it I think I might rent the remake in the future.

Additionaly, what kind of idiot jumps when the toaster pops? It must be a riot to be around you on Halloween.

Fallacy of composition. The genre is not jump scares, any more then the action genre is spunky female love interests. Simply hating on an aspect of the genre is not to hate on the genre as a whole.
More-over, his argument is that jump scares do not require skill or talent. Not that they are bad, though that is a reasonable inference. Thus, complaining that he is a hater of the genre who entered the theater with his mind made up, true or not, is not a valid rebuttal to his point. And in fact, constitutes an ad hominem.
For my part, I have no interest whatsoever in the horror genre even to critique it, so if you like jump scares, more power to you. But there's no excuse for sloppy argumentation.

Saw the remake today and genuinely enjoyed it. I was always a bigger Friday the 13th fan growing up, but I enjoyed the early Nightmare films. At least the remake felt like it belonged alongside the first two Nightmare films. Thankfully, Freddy didn't spout one-liners the entire film; that's the very thing that killed the franchise for me the first go-around. I'm glad you're sticking up for this remake, guys. Angry Joe's review felt like he almost had more of an agenda against Freddy's look than the actual film itself; it clearly tainted the experience for him badly.

Brad and Jerrid, I love you both for your honest opinions on this film. You both managed to articulate what I've been thinking but in a much better way than I ever could. Especially about people not even wanting to give it a chance.
Thank you very much.

I'll go and see this with an open mind. I enjoyed Mike Bay's Friday the Umpteenth to an unfeasible degree.
But I dunno these Platinum Dunes things have been really poor, which is the reason people mistrust Bay. If TCM and the Hitcher had been good, then we would all be saying "Wow, them Platinum Dune boys are great". Then again why remake these films when you could give young directors new projects to work with for about a fifth of the budget and still make money, plus have a higher chance of making a good film.

Inglourious Basterds had a credit sequence.

So it is okay but not as good as the originals? And I don't care much about Jackie Earle Haley. I have seen him only in watchmen and that one was based on a good book. So I still don't understand why everybody is a fan of him.
And why is everybody on rottentomatoes bad about this. If you can say I love this, does this mean ok for a remake. Or just fun to watch (even if it is pretty shitty)?
And when you are watching this, do you miss Robert Englund? How does it compare?
How much of the best moments of the series are in it? How much originality is in it?
Have a nice day

Of course nothing will be as good as the original. This remake traded some small stuff (ie: Nancy's mom's character for a darker and intimidating Freddy...) I did feel like I was cheating on Mr. Englund...in a...fan of his sort of way. About 75-85% are remakes of the original including the blood gyser toward the end, but with a twist. I did not LOVE it, but I enjoyed it.

Truman, if you watch "Little Children," you'd understand why Jackie Earle Haley is such a well-received actor. Also, he's in "Shutter Island," but he's only in one scene (he's the lobotomized patient).
His portrayal of Rorschach was actually pretty close to how I envisioned it when I first read "Watchmen."
I don't understand your point about his role in "Watchmen," though -- yes, it's based on a great book, but what does that have to do with his acting ability?
All films are based on written material in some way, whether it be a novel, a comic book, a script, or a poem ("Beowulf," "Tristan and Isolde"). Being in a movie based on a book does not diminish one's acting talent.

Man, I love Dream Warriors. I like the funny one-liners, I thought for entertainment value that one was the best. That being said, the original was the scariest and most creative visually. The dream sequences and death scenes are amazing. The creativity that was involved with that budget was amazing.
I'll probably go see this movie, even though everyone on RT seems to say it sucks, but that seems pretty typical of slasher films anyways. I really wish critics would rate based on genre.
About sequences, I don't know why, but I always loved the 50-60s Hitchcock and the Dollar trilogy title sequences. They always seemed so vivid and the music always sucked me in.

It was Ronnie Blakely who played Nancy's mom in the original.

I don't really have too much of an issue with remakes either way to be honest. It's the one element of nerd rage I've just never really been able o get behind. Which is not to say they're all good, or even a good idea, and also that's not to say you can't compare them to the originals, because you should, but I've never been OFFENDED by the idea of one. It's all just sitting round the campfire being told a story.

I never really intended to see this remake in the theaters. Watching the trailers, I didn't think it looked bad, just unnecessary. I probably still won't see this in theaters but considering I usually trust your judgment, I'll probably check it out on DVD.

I'm actually not surprised that Brad liked this movie. While I have not seen it, it kinda has a similar basic idea for rebooting that Rob Zombie's Halloween did (which I did not like). The whole thing of making the character more sympathetic and adding extra backstory reminds me of that, but that's just me.
Like some of the other posters have mentioned, it seems unnecessary as (at least most) of the films haven't dated too much, but that can backfire even if many could consider an older film dated and the remake is terrible (Rollerball).
Reply to this
Freddy is not made sympathetic in this movie. In fact, quite the opposite. He's seen as a child molesting, perverted monster, and scary hell; something he hasn't been since 1985.
Reply to this
I actually saw this in the drive-in (the home of the slasher) but I sadly though it was bad. Not because of the Michael Bay tag, but the "Freddy is a pedo" element felt tacked on to make him evil again.
But, you are totally right about the horrible looking teens. I enjoyed that. It seemed they wanted to comment on how the teen generation now is hopped up on so many behavioral and prescription drugs, but they didn't push it far enough.
As for the ending, I would still go for the original's. That one was more shocking and creepy with its surrealism.
Reply to this
He's Freddy Krueger, he's supposed to be evil.
Reply to this
Exactly. He was and always has been a pedo/child killer...this movie just goes into more detail about it..Seeing as this is the FIRST in (hopefully) at least a trilogy, it makes sense to establish what exactly made Kruger so evil and why he is hated. I'm looking forward to some sequels and hope to see the dream sequences become more elaborate and creative.

I'm perplexed, really expected you two to bash the movie to Hell but you really loved it. Another reviewer I follow, no not Ebert, bashed the movie for being pointless, stereotypical and very uninspired in the death department. The reviewer, Movie Bob usually made allot of good points in other movies if they are good or not but this time he ripped the crap out of it.
Really I don't know if I should go to see it seeing it kind of has the Michal Bay stamp on it as in no likable characters and I think Brad and Jerrid didn't say if the characters were likable or just cannon fodder for Freddy( a trait I despise in horror), remakes usually are bad and the movie sounds allot like the first with minor alterations so why don't I just pop in the old one.
Well I'll wait for a 2-1 score maybe although technically Jerrid makes it a 2-1 reviews. Fun fact if I close the monitor I can pretend it's a Radiodrome episode...hint hint nudge nudge.

Thanks for the link to your observations towards Bob's review. Still don't know what to say about the movie. Yeah Bob was wrong that they all get killed with the claws in the gut, but if you say 4 people get killed by different clawing that's kind of lame, seeing it was a mark of the movies to find different ways the teenagers to die in their dreams.
Freddy scary, that also has to do with the age of the viewer + the amount of horror he has been subjected although in the Saw/Hostel generation I wonder if the new or the older Freedy are scary anymore. Seeing that the movie is R-rated I don't think many over 18 people will be that scared if there are most jump scares and if they make it bloody without gore that's debatable.
Yeah Brad and Jerrid say it has disturbing and some unnerving scenes. Still not convinced and know why, because again people don't make it look like the main characters are likable and you care for them. That was a major element for horror in the 80s that are missing with sequels and the predominance of gore over plot.
Reply to this
For what it's worth, I cared MORE about these kids than I ever did about the kids in the original NMOES. I felt they had greater depth and were easier for me to empathize with. Probably because these kids suffer more and are greater victims of Freddy even prior to him appearing in their dreams. I actively rooted for them, and I never did that with the 1984 group.
I haven't seen MovieBob's review, so I can't comment on anything he's said, but I can say that I tend to agree with what TygerFire's post suggests. I had to avert my eyes a couple of times for gore (though I admit I'm highly sensitive to such things so my standards may be different) but most of the use of blood was appropriate, and I found the deaths individualized and chilling. (That said, I'm also really sensitive to loud noises, so jump scares work pretty well for me. I'd know they were coming and still jump. So maybe my views on this aren't so great.)
On the whole, my view is to go see it and judge for yourself, especially if you're on the fence. Personally, I like this one better than the original (blasephmy, I know), but in the end it's just different and only you can really judge if you're okay/like it for what it is.
Reply to this
What I was trying to say in the review is that a lot of the kids in the theater were getting scared, but for us older people who have seen the original, you see some of these reprized scenes and you know what's going to happen. So you are not scared, but there were some lines that Freddy delivered that were kind of disturbing and shocking that you would not have heard in the originals, so that's where it becomes worthwhile to see it.

I don't think I'm gonna go see this. Not because I think it'll ruin the classics (I've never even seen the original....I know), but because I can't see myself really enjoying it. I don't think any of my friends are interested in seeing this, and this seems like the perfect movie to see in a group. So, I may give it a rental someday but only because I've actually heard it's pretty good.

I attended a midnight showing of Nightmare on Elm Street on Thursday and enjoyed it very much. I was glad to find a positive review of this movie as I have felt very much in the minority in liking this movie. I definitely agree with everything you both said in the review but wanted to add that I also enjoyed the use of sleep deprivation symptoms like micronaps. They not only added an interesting atmosphere to the movie but I also liked the way it played into Freddy's motives in the film as well.

Sorry to post again, but I felt the need to comment on something that's coming FAR too often- the fact that, because Freddie was screaming that he didn't do it in the trailer, The Internet has decided that the film will be about how Freddie didn't do what he was accused of, and is now doing this because he was wronged, which if they'd paid any attention to what others have said (including fucking BRAD in this video), isn't the case. If anything, the people in charge of this one push things in that direction even farther than the original creators. The reason he was protesting his innocence in the trailer is because in life he was weak-willed, weasely child molester/murderer who had been found out was in the process of being stalked by people willing TO SET FIRE TO HIM. He was trying desperately to save him own life by protesting his innocence.
Reply to this
Wait, people went to this and thought that because he was protesting he was innocent?
Maybe I pay too close attention. Which is true sometimes; but by the end you know Freddy is guilty and a manipulative son of a bitch....The stupidity of some humans astounds me(not you, CheaArseFilmCritic other people)

This is about the only positive review I've heard so far, 'cept for Harry Knowles.
Might I add, it's VERY refreshing to hear someone besides me cop to liking the second "Nightmare". Never did understand people's grudge against that movie. It was "Nightmare 3" (which most people like) where the series went to crap.

I just got back from seeing it at a drive in, and it was seriously great. Like, honestly, it's now one of my favorite Nightmare movies. Granted, I only really like the first one and New Nightmare, but that still says a lot about this one. Why is it getting such a negative reception? What's wrong with it? Yours is the only positive review I've seen, Brad. Hell, I got home and told some friends they need to see it, and they snubbed me saying everyone says it's awful so they're skipping it. What the Hell?

A 7-year-old in a horror movie, huh? I remember when I went to see the 90s remake of House on Haunted Hill; a woman brought a kid about that age in to see it. I didn;t know whether to laugh or tell her she was in the wrong room.

I would like if Freddy dies at the end like he should of in the original. I heard he was suppose to but the film company didn't want the franchise to end so Wes Craven had to redo the ending or some shit

I thought it was okay, not that good, but not horrible. I thought the film worked in doing something different. I liked learning more about Freddy, they didnt just skip over it quickly like in Friday the 13th. I didnt really like the title sequence too much, because I didnt care much for what it consisted of. It set a mood, but it was kinda boring. Im not use to Jackie Earl yet, his voice just bothers me. I like him a lot when he was Pre-death Freddy, but after I felt it didnt fit too well. Aside from Jackie Earl, the rest were just dull as door nails. I really didnt care much for anyone else in the film. I mean I laughed so hard at the lines delivered by the first victim. I also didnt like the jump scares, it got dull after awhile and I felt it was pretty cheap. I also thought the effects are bad. The wall pop isnt as good as the original, and the ending scene(You know...)looked really fake to me. Nothing like real effects.
I wasnt bored, but I didnt feel it was that great. I would rent it.

First off, THANK YOU! for being the only people I have seen online to admit that Robert's Freddy was NOT a child molester, just a child killer (and he only did that after "the people of Springwood" took his daughter).

Glad to hear its fun. I guess I'll see it.
I'm a fan of all the nightmare movies, even the ones you guys dont like and each for different reasons. Ya, the first two had characters they made you like and then they made Freddy a parody of himself in the later movies but it was ok to me because the concept was fun and I enjoyed it. I would have preferred if they just made a new nightmare movie instead of a remake (i'll never consider this a "remake" as the first nightmare movie is superb and didnt need a remake at all) but i'll give this a chance- as I agree, Jackie Earl or whatever his name is (im terrible with names, sorry) is a good actor so I want to support that if nothing else.
Man, now I wanna watch all the old nightmare movies again. Those are so fun to watch.

Well having a little marathon of Nightmare on Elm Street series. Yesterday saw the first one, it really has aged good. But what baffles me is why the hate for Part 2. For the life of me I can't understand. My only complaints would be the pool scene near the end was badly acted and badly edited, Jesse's dad in some scenes was unnecessarily douchey( but that could be a satire towards parents) and at the very end they really started acting badly or was that on purpose. Still a solid movie, very disturbing, very psychological, the twist was really good, in my opinion and some really good jump scares, didn't jump but I appreciate their rarity and their use and really unnerving in some scenes.
I'll repeat I'll never understand why the hate for the sequel. The ending was a little confusing but it also had a sort off cyclic characteristic and it matches the ending to the first one pretty well: open ended, left to interpretations. If this one was so badly rated than by my standards the next ones should be masterpieces.
Reply to this
Part 2 is one of my favorites and an excellent follow up to the first movie. The characters were believable in their normalness especially Clu Gulager as the doting father trying to figure out whats going with his son. The surreal dream imagery was also way out there like something out of a Dali painting. Yea i noticed the "bad" acting with the parents near the end aswell which made me right away think is this Freddie in disguise which may have been the intended effect.
After not seeing any of the movies for ages i sat down and watched a few of them in the late 1990s and i was surprised how malevolently evil Freddie was in the earlier movies. I had been thinking of him as mainly a serial killer but instead i saw before me a disturbing demonic force who relished in blood soaked death like humans relish sexual intercourse. Something anti-life of pure eternal hatred lingering in our primal memories waiting to strike out of the shadows never totally seen by all.
I was fooled watching the later movies before the first two into thinking it was going to be more incredible black humour gags. Instead i found..

Just in response to "...why the hate for the sequel."
The director and crew talk about it a little bit in the special features on the version I have. There was alot of controversy I guess (I dont remember this from personal experience as I was to young at the time to care about such things) around the assumed meanings of certain things that happen in the movie. Such as Freddy using the kid to cross over into reality and what-not. I dont want to offend so I'm not gong to go into detail because its reaching a bit, but something about coming out of the closet...
I think the effects were some of the best in the second movie but I didnt like it as much as the first myself. I found it to move slower, and did alot less. Granted, they touched more on psychological thriller and torture in the second which was ok, but even that was a bit dry (his nightmare was being trapped on a bus... not gonna spoil to much but I didnt find it very clever).
There was alot of metaphor (or at least assumed metaphor) in the second movie, alot of which caused most the controversy around it. For me, I dont like it as much as I found the pacing to be off and it drags in the middle. I also dont like the main character all that much. Just my opinoin on that though.
I dont know if there's new hate with other reasons for the second but thats what I know about the second movie if that counts for anything.

Lots of Spoilers for Freddy's Revenge
Here's why I think the sequel is really good: Freddy was weakened from his fight with Nancy, we find out the events from Part 2 happen after 5 years from the first and now he can only haunt the dreams of only one person. Why did he choose Jesse? Well at the start of the movie when Jesse has a nightmare and wakes up, his sister says why can't he wake up like everybody else, the parents don't act surprised about his screams and his mother says he's alright, he's having a bad dream. So the guy already had problems with sleeping so he's a perfect target for Freddy. Also he asks the kid to kill for hims, as in Freddy needs victims to get stronger.
The other points that make it for me a solid sequel is the twist from the first movie to have someone guard over you when you are sleeping. In the first one Glenn fucked up and Nancy was almost sliced by Freddy. In the second Jesse asks Grady to guard him and we all know what happened in that disturbing scene.
Also the movie does the same thing like the first, switches main characters in an interesting turn of events. Oh and the baptism of fire at the end was also symbolic.
Yes the movie has some flaws, I really didn't sense the homoerotic undertones they keep talking about. I mean really people can give different interpretations to a movie and shouldn't it be applauded if the movie has many layers in it's plot not just hack and slash.
For me the movie really didn't feel slow at all. It felt intense while portraying Jesse's slow fall into madness, the possibility he could kill he's loved ones and how easily is to control an innocent person for Freddy. I think the movie really showed how powerful Freddy can actually be even when he's weak.
If I had an only big gripe with the movie, better said it's biggest flaw is that the movie feels to dependent of the first.
Also, nope no new hate, just surprised me how much I liked the second one and how much hate it received than.

Ya, all your pints are valid, and I want to add I would never say this movie shouldn't have been made. In all fairness it's quite brillaint that it even was as they could have glossed over Freddy's weakness and written it as a 20-30 minute build up, but they didnt. I do agree, using that to focus the horror is quite brillaint, and as far as I remember most the controversy around the second is unfounded and people finding metaphor where (if I recall what the director said properly) it was not intended.
Personally I think it was more indicative of the time that people made that conclusion with this film but id have to back it up with something and I cant remember stuff so well so its only a guess at this point.
Its just not one of my favorites is all. Its still part of the rounds when I watch them all and while there is alot to relate to with the main character I could not relate to how it was played I guess. I dont know, it's just me.
I do agree, though, it is well made. I did not have a problem with the writing so much and I also think the homoerotic stuff people cite is reaching. For me (possibly because its the most psychological of the Nightmare films) it feels like the slowest.

i'll probably rent the movie. i am a Kruger fan, so i do want to see it, but the thing that's turning me off the film isn't michael bay, but the make-up. if they kept the make-up the same, i wouldn't be complaining. i wouldn't watch it in theatres, just cuz i HATE watching horror movies in theatres. stupid 14 y.o. girls screaming at a leaf pisses me off

oh, speaking of which I could have sworn I saw a tombstone with the name 'J. Walsh' on it in the bottom left of the opening shot to that scene at the cemetery early in the movie. It was very quick and I might be wrong since I haven't heard anyone else mention it.

I've finally realised what it is I don't like about platinum dunes. They take films that were notable for breaking away from Gothic horror trappings and give them a Romantic/Gothic gleam. Exaggerated sets, rain storms, big film scores, moody lighting, histrionic acting, telegraphed jumps and carefully arranged pseudo-grime.

I'm so glad to see someone else likes this movie. Pretty much everyone I know has been bashing it. Most of them before they've even seen it.
As you pointed out, the hatred for it comes solely from the Micheal Bay/Platinum Dunes name attached to it. Most people just weren't even willing to give it a chance. Thank you for not being one of them, good sir.

This video is very fair and exactly what I thought of it. I'm a huge Freddy fan and although not as good as the original like you said, Its still a good movie surprisingly! There was also plenty of nods to the other movies but since you didn't mention that in the video I guess you didn't catch them?

Well I won't continue on that comment because it will become a line.
Just saw the 3rd Nightmare on Elm Street. Really solid sequel, great special effects and I can't emphasize enough how great the special effects were. The concept of Freddy being able to transform the deaths of his victims to look like suicides is really genius. I mean it's really disturbing to think an revengeful spirit or WTF Freddy is can evolve, can change his MO from what he learned from his previous victims. The way they included Nancy was also very ingenious. Too bad they don't say her age or how many years there have been since the death of her mother to know if the writers include the second as canon or not. Also a minor detail but there were 2 unlikable characters that technically by today's movie standards they would get killed the minute all shit breaks loose but in this movie they didn't. So kudos to them for not making the movie a revenge flick or giving in into petty stereotypes.
I have only 2 gripes with the movie. The first victim how he died was really disturbing but what I don't understand is how can he pass through doors. I mean yeah Freddy can manipulate his surroundings to some extent, he can control his victims, but the first victim to pass through the doors while still being in the real world was kind of strange. My second gripe the movie seemed like a love letter to fans. I mean there were 4 kids in the first and 7 in the second and by the movie another kid died so 8. So in total 12 people took to kill Freddy. They did that only to get more dream kills in the movie. I wonder if in the sequels will find out that he wants to kill the whole town because they were all into it. It seemed more disturbing when it was a dark secret only 4 families knew.
Also the theme song Dream Warriors at the end was awesome. 80s rock FTW. I'll post my opinions on the others individually if they are any good but from what I heard New Nightmare was the last good one. Still a movie to have 2 solid sequels by me is pretty impressive by today's standards.

i honestly enjoyed this movie too. and you're right. it was downright sleazy. and it made this freddy much more scary. i like SOME of the old freddys jokes but this one was nice and dark. my moms an old school fan so she didn't enjoy it. i had no idea it was from the same people who made the other remakes. considering the other movies that companys has make, this one was the best they've done so far.

Dose this one have Robert Englund as Freddy ? Or did they use some one else ? Because his voice fit Freddy's character very well

Haven't watched the remake yet, but on the topic of opening credit sequences, you're right in that movies have been passing them up these days, however, "Watchmen", did have an opening credit sequence--one of the coolest ones I've ever seen. Oh yeah, I think Avatar is soooo overrated. Of course, everyone's entitled to there opinion, I just wasn't that impressed with it.

Jackie Earle Haley did a fine job but that's really the only compliment I can give to it. Despite a few scenes I thought it was actually very boring. Just glad I didn't spend any money on it though.

Chiming in for more love of opening credits. Ironically, they tend to get me more into a movie watching mood than jumping straight to the action.
Btw, the two person movie review seems to work pretty well. There are fewer pauses, although you seem to go offtopic more. That's not necessarily bad though.

Zombieland had an opening credit sequence, an awesome one too

I still can't see why so many people like this film. Maybe there's a vague pleasure in seeing Freddy back on the big screen in a movie almost as good as Jason goes to Hell.
NOES goes nowhere, adds nothing and is so anonymous it's untrue. Mainstream horror films have looked exactly like this since the mid-1990s. Great chunks of NOES 2010 could be outtakes from Urban Legend! What is the criteria for saying this is good. What? The camera doesn't wobble? Hammy TV movie angst and sub-promo-clip editing are signs of genius? People who say that Mike Bay didn't direct the film miss the point. Anyone could have directed this film from PDs tea-boy to their security guard and it would look exactly the same. There is nothing in this film that has not been done a billion times in numerous ho-hum horror films over the last decade or so. Honestly, this is as corny as the Wolf man. Nightmare on Elm Street reduced to yet another trad Gothic horror movie with bad CGI instead of a desire to do anything even remotely interesting. What's missing from this film is any sense of authorship or that the people who constructed the thing were anything other than hired hands. Is it PDs best film. The competition is stiff. TCM,abysmal. The Hitcher, worse than having your ears nailed to your skull and being forced to watch a steamroller run over your cat. LHOTL, a bunch of models torture each-other for a photo shoot, only a lot more camp. Friday 13, I liked this because it reminded me that big studios could still make inept incoherent films. PDs originals like The Horsemen and Unborn, actually managed to be more derivative than any of their remakes! So yes, NOES is PDs best film and it is still appalling.

I really enjoyed it. People just can't wrap their heads around a non-silly Freddy Kruger that doesn't appear with The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air or make video game references.
The original will always be a classic, but lets face it, the whole serious is dated as fuck and became a dumb parody of itself.
Because of that, a remake was warranted and I thought Jackie Earl Haley did an amazing job.

Great Review Brad... while I agree with certain points like Jackie being pretty good in it, I was still disappointed in the whole thing... It just didn't feel right. I did a review of it for my website, you can check it out.

Well I will have to say one thing about opening credit sequences. My opinion is that a lot of people know about movie companies, directors actors and producers. Though, the majority of people dont look to see what company, or director/producer is actually publishing the movie. Example, The same company that made Independence day, The day after tomorrow, and 2012, All Made by Roland Emmerich. Now everyone knows that those movies are virtually identical save for key plot points. If on every movie that was made by him had his name posted across the screen or even openly known by the general public that they were all made by him, everyone would realize that he is the same as M.night shamalan. Let me guess ITS A TWIST! Or in this Case Eff New York!!! All Rolands movies have the specific scene of Ny getting Trashed, And in case you dont know he even Made the crappy Godzilla 2000 movie! If for any reason there are no more opening Credits Its because If you see the name in the beginning its a guarantee that people are just going to bash it from the start. And in all honesty If Shamalan make twists Avatar Im going to be pissed. I wouldnt be surprised either I can see it now. At the end of the movie the whole reason why People can bend the forces of earth is because If zombie werewolves from the moon.

I went to see this movie with from what you lot said on here. What the hell are you guys talking about!??? This movie is horrid! It completely pisses on the Elm Street franchise! There is no plot literally at all as the movie just starts out of nowhere, the characters are all boring, the death scenes (apart from the bedroom scene with tina) are dull, no gore, the camera work is terrible and the CGI!! Oh my god what went wrong there? The CGI can be best described if you have seen the Peter Jackson movie The Frighteners. That movie was made over 10 years ago! How can they fob us off with such poor effects! The only thing I liked was Haley's performance as Freddy which was very organic and seemed believable, but still his makeup was terrible even compared to the original Freddy. And what is it with all these stupid "one liners" All of them were incredibly silly and out of place. It would of been ok if it had a few here and there but seriously every time he is on screen he blurts out a cringe worthy line that just buries the movie even further.
If you at all like horror movies, then do not see this movie!
PS/ Texas Chainsaw Massacre the Begining was a great movie, much better than the remake and much much better than this movie!

Okay, what's weird about this is, in the original movie, Freddy was a child molester. It was just more hinted at and not blatenly said, and then in the later movies they tried to make it seem like he was only a child killer. Wes Craven says this himself on the special features of the Nightmare collection that Brad owns (8th disk, can see it on your shelf). This really isn't directed at Brad and Jerrid, more of the people commenting here.
Anyway, the first and third movie are my favorite, I admit though that I thought the portion of the third movie were the kids start controlling what they were in the dreams was done in a way that was corney and stupid. Not a big fan of the second, fourth, or fifth.
Anyway, kind of glad I saw this. I was planning on completly avoiding this, but know I'll probably rent/buy, to at least give it a fair chance.
If it matters, I did NOT originally not want to see this film because of Platnum Dunes or Michael Bay. I didn't want to see it because Robert Englund is the only Freddy to me. Plus I don't like the new Freddy makeup, they could of at least left that alone. I donno, maybe it looks better then it did in the trailer. And I guess the makers kind of went against Wes Craven and completly cut him out of anything, which I love me some Wes Craven.
But even with all of that, you guys convinced me...

To be honest I did kind of like the remake, but definitely not more than the original. While I also like the "darker" Freddy Kruger there's also the "lighter" that I like too and I'm of the opinion that there could be a balanced reached.
As far as opening title sequences go, the only movie that I could think of is the opening sequence for Shadow of the Vampire...god that was long!

To be honest, I didn't like this one very much. It was okay, but that was about as far as I'm willing to go with it. I think I might be biased against it though, as there are some elements in it that seem to be lifted straight out of Freddy's Dead, which I rewatched recently; it's only the second-worst of the franchise, in my opinion. On top of that, there was far too much recycling in the death scenes. The atmosphere also felt off much of the time, the diner scene in particular. But still, this remake was okay for the most part, and I think a lot of people will really enjoy it.
On the subject of Friday the 13th: I actually really enjoyed that movie, and I'm surprised that you didn't. I don't really consider it a remake, so much as a sequel that just doesn't bother connecting with the rest of the franchise; more a reboot, if anything. None of the death scenes were recycled, nor the plot. I found the characters to be likable on the whole (with one exception), and the casting was up to the task of a slasher flick (unlike the exceptionally poor cast of Freddy vs Jason). As a Friday the 13th fan, I really enjoyed the so-called "remake" where-as I merely find Nightmare to be a fair attempt.
I am glad that I'm not the only one who enjoys the second Nightmare on Elm Street. I never understood the complaints that people level at that movie. It was certainly better than what the franchise eventually became, before Wes Craven's New Nightmare redeemed it. I actually found Nightmare 4 to be unwatchable, and despite owning all of them, I have still not completed a viewing of that movie.

I think this remake along with EVERY single remake thats been put out in the past 4 years is a FLOPPING PIECE OF COW DUNG! Micheal myers was the worst, friday the 13th was the second worst and this pathetic attempt to portray freddy was the least offensive but it still stunk horribly. I cant even begin to understand why anyone would like it. The qulaity of the picture was good but thats about it, the movie on it sucked! Putting that bay guy aside completely cuz I dont care who is in it, who creates it, my opinion is completely unbaised. anyone can make a movie but it takes truly talented people to create a good one and apparently the director or writers who created this garbage didnt have even "talent" to create anything worth the $10 I wasted watching this filth.

It's not "Michael Myers," it's "Halloween." And that film was pretty great, in my opinion -- it actually delved into his past and we got to see the making of a monster, which is always interesting.
Your claim to be "completely unbiased" is inaccurate -- it's pretty clear from your post that you hate remakes in general, meaning that you viewed it with a skewed opinion.
Also, why do you have to point out that you don't care who is in the movie? Jackie Earle Haley is a fine actor, and I was excited to find out he was going to be in it; I knew that, if anything, he would at least turn in a great performance.
