As a fan of the show, I will completely back up all of your statements. The movie is based on the first season of the show, which is 20 episodes - each episode is maybe 22-minutes (without commercials/credits). They basically took four episodes of it (the opening, a relatively important middle episode, and the finale) and made that into the movie - the effect is really jarring, as a fan of the show. And the lack of color in this movie - particularly with the 3D glasses - was awful. The show is done in a very Miyazaki-esque fashion, full of beautiful colors and whimsical creatures - and this was just... monochrome blue with occasional spots of fire.
And as somebody who watches movies and not as a fan of the show, it was just fucking terrible. Great review, Brad. Reply to this

You must be kidding me, Return of the Jedi was the beginning of the end, granted looking back at Episode 1 and 2, we see it definitely was getting worse, but Star Wars peaked at Empire, and never did we see a decent closer to that series. The main conflict was the original's except with one of the greatest SciFi movies ever broke them up, Mark Hamill decided to stop acting like a character and started acting like a robot, they started going with muppet style aliens rather than believable aliens, the technology went up so much that Lucas decided to start his tech demo phase, and then there's the Ewok fight scene, which makes no sense! If they had not made Episode 1-3, then this movie would be considered the abomination of the series. It is, in fact, the only movie that got better when they released the new trilogy. Reply to this

I agree that RotJ is the weakest of the trilogy but it still is a decent conclusion to the saga. Mark Hamil's acting was on par with the other two installments; more and better technology is not a problem; puppet aliens existed in the first installment and all aliens in Star Wars have always been weird; and the Ewoks.
Stop complaining about the damn Ewoks! So they look like teddy bears. I will agree that is kindof stupid but if you get over that they're actually pretty awesome. It is not completely unrealistic that they would defeat the Empire this one time because, let's face it, the Empire was clearly at a disadvantage not being experienced handling warfare in the forest as can be seen by them using those clumsy mechs. The Ewoks don't have a flawless victory, we see many of them dying, and it was a pretty good battle scene. Reply to this

Pfft, you apparently haven't read the Christophe Gans interviews...what a faggot.
CG: Yes. Although, when we first decided to do Silent Hill, we wanted to base it on the second game. It was very natural, since that game is the favorite of every fan, and it's the one with the most beautiful world, and it's the most emotional one of all four. Every gamer who finished the game knows what I'm talking about... it's a very tragic and romantic game, and it's a beautiful adaptation of the myth of Orpheus- going to hell to bring back his love, Eurydice. It was not a real Silent Hill, though; the town serves as the background to the story, but it's not really about the mythology. So, when we decided to do the film, we realized that it was impossible to talk about Silent Hill and not talk about why this town is like that. So we realized that we had to adapt the first one.
Of course, we were facing the fact that the characters that we love so much were designed for games, and not to be played by real actors. It became readily apparent when we began to write the script and had to deal with the [main] character, Harry Mason. We realized after two weeks in the writing process that Harry was actually motivated by feminine, almost maternal feelings. It's not that he's effeminate, but he's acting like a woman. So, if we wanted to keep the character, we would have to change other aspects of him...so to be true to the character, we changed Harry into Rose. Essentially, all the people who love Silent Hill are more interested in seeing the mood and atmosphere of the games rather than if a certain character is wearing pants or a dress. Also, when we decided to adapt the characters of Cybil and Dahlia, we found it difficult, mainly because they appear only sparsely in the game. When you have to create a narrative arc for these characters, you have to work really hard to make them work on the big screen.
from the EGM interview.
And also
CS: I noticed that there are a lot of women in "Silent Hill." Was there something symbolic about that? Gans: Actually, when we decided to adapt the first game, we decided to have the hero of the first game, a guy named Harry Mason, but when we put him on the paper and tried to be very close to the original character of the game, we noticed that he was almost never acting like a man, but much more like a woman. When we decided to make him a woman, we realized that all the game was filled with women. It was almost like a complete feminine world, so then we realized that it was very interesting that "Silent Hill" was dealing with such issues as motherhood, sisterhood, immaculate conception, and we realized that was a good angle to make the film. It started as a convenient thing, making the character female, but then it became the structure of the project, and we realized that "Silent Hill" was a feminine dimension http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=14165

Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill Vol. 2. Those two movies are SOO bad, that they are an insult to everything that I like about movies. I even think I would of been more interested in the Harry Potter series if they made it in an animated TV series (budget reasons, you can see the cheapness and budget cuts in series like Smallville). The Three musketeers, in my opinion had their best adaptation in anime form, because it had 52 episodes to tell it all. It took some liberties with the material, which makes it more awesome and it didn't make you want more and felt rushed like every Three Musketeers movie I've seen.
My conclusion from your review is, TV series this time have the edge over movies since they can develop allot better a story, but I'll admit budget and ambitious visions usually are associated with movies, movies that usually want to present a vision like Fitzcarraldo. Even in The Lord of The Rings I can clearly see they made some cuts. Reply to this

Seriously, leave the kiddystuff from the show aside and you have a great concept for a movie trilogy that could rival, i dare to say it, the lord of the rings trilogy. The original characters could have easily translated into liveaction, the story dont need to be a remake of the original and the concept is good for awesome special effects and actionscenes. Yeah, I agree the acting and script combined into something pretty dismal. I'm not so sure how much blame goes to the actors Vs. M.Night for that though. The sets were good, costumes good, Dev Patel did have a passable performance which makes it the best in the movie. The effects weren't bad, not anything super special either, but the fight choreography didn't mesh with it at all. Not nearly enough "bending bang for kung fu buck."
Example: The synchronized earthbending stomp-dance troupe. Six or seven guys did that whole number... to make one not-very-big rock float toward one fire guard. And it didn't even go very fast. This is very representative of the action scenes. Reply to this
Personally I had some real problems with this film, mostly the dialogue and the editing (personally I find the name mispronunciations hilarious XD
But I was excited when I heard that the Kyoshi Warriors were supposed to be in this film but got cut due to M. Night thinking that it would be better to giving them lots of screen time in the second film.
One critic, Movie Bob said that this is a franchise after all, so maybe with more movies, it can get better and work itself out. Personally, I agree with this and I hope they make sequels. I just hope they just don't screw up Toph XD

I suppose I could be content to add that anything translated from an anime series (or anything similiar) that's based upon sagas/chapters/ect. would have a difficult time in a two-hour conversion. Still, of everything, I think the acting and face twitches killed it the most. They tried so hard to be vocally and physically accurate to the characters that the ability to translate emotion and stability into their acting was non-apparent.

Return of the jedi isn't that bad. I think it finishes the original trilogy well. If you were a real star wars fan you'd except it for what it is. It's better then any movie in the prequel trilogy. You're just a stupid retard who lives in his mother's basement I'm guessing.

I wasn't surprised that it was a bad movie-you really could see that to begin with. The fact the lead actor has no actual acting experience is a bad sign to start. The bigger question is why they even picked Shyamalan to direct in the first place. This never was his kind of movie in the first place. Even if they gave it to him just to finish off some contractual number of sequels, why gamble so much money and one of Viacom's most valuable intellectual properties on someone who doesn't have any indication of understanding the genre and who hasn't made a popular movie in almost a decade.

I expected this. From the initial news that it would attempt to tell the whole first season in a single film to the last of the TV promo airings, I expected this. I could easily see how this film would not only attempt to do too much at once but manage to drain every single drop of warmth, depth, magic, and even color out of one of the most well-thought, life-affirming series to grace television in my 29 years of life.
However, I know this movie was not made for me. It was made for children with the pester power to get their parents into the theater. It was made for those who while a welcome contribution to the fanbase cannot possibly conceive the many themes and messages the series communicates.
I do not feel ashamed in the least to say that in a small way the existence of this movie hurts my soul.

You'll get over it. When they (hollywood) did this to me, I thought I would never get over it! They ruined Silent Hill for me. I was absolutly obsessed with Silent Hill the game series and when the movie came out I was very very disappointed.
Now alot of people who weren't fans of the game came to the movie's defense and called me an asshole and many other names under the sun saying that I was too attached to the game to not allow myself the opportunity to see it from a different point of view.
I still haven't seen it from their point of view. I still hate the movie. And now, reading your message, I ache for you. Because now I'm on the other side.
I saw the movie and I liked it alot. And the fact that I liked it makes it sad for me because I understand what you're feeling as a fan. They raped your heart...meaning: Airbender is apart of your heart...thats where it dwells. When I saw Silent Hill I felt that they took something that I loved and turned it into a product.
You said that the show was warm, had depth, magic, color, and was well thought out. I feel the same out my game series. Its more than a game to me. Its a story that I love with all my heart. They destroyed it without thinking about the fans. They envisioned something that had no thought about WHY WE LOVE THIS STORY. Ask someone who loves the story and realize why we love this story.

Yeah, what was the deal with changing the main character to a female in the movie? I think Silent Hill needed a male lead to balance out the roles since the other main characters and even antagonists were female. So many females made it feel odd.
It started as a convenient thing, making the character female, but then it became the structure of the project, and we realized that "Silent Hill" was a feminine dimension

News flash. Brad isn't the troll here. Leaving a comment saying "Duuuh i don't agree with yer video now i'm never watching again duuuh". THAT'S trolling. Not very good trolling, mind you, but you are what you claim Brad to be. Congratulations.

There is a theory that says once M. Night Shyamalan has reached the absolute bottom on IMDBs worst list, he will suddenly make the greatest movie ever. It will be his ultimate twist on all of us.
That being said, I'm not a fan of the animated TV series either. Its done in anime style and I never cared for that genre. Give me Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck anyday or, if it has to Nickeloden, Angry Beavers. Its funny that NickToons is playing the entire first season of A:TLA the weekend. I'm sure there are plenty of fans staying home to watch that instead of this cinematic gang rape of a film.

Thank god for critics. I was actually going to see this. I liked the TV show and I really wasn't expecting this movie to do it justice, but I still thought it'd be an entertaining summer flick. I was ready to go out and buy my ticket when I saw Ebert's half star review and two other reviews that said it was disaster and I decided to hold onto my money.
I normally don't listen to what the critics say but when they all say its a disaster then it's usually true.
Thanks for pointing out the penis hair though, I'll uh look on cable for that one xP

You know, I'm surprised that people are surprised by how had this was. Dragon Ball Z, Speed Racer... has there been a live action adaptation of an anime series that has done well, commercially?

It wasn't an anime, American produced, and (I think) Korean animated
Also the Dragon Ball and Speed Racer movies did really well overseas, enough to prompt a sequel for Dragonball (which will be awful I'm sure)

I loathed this movie. I was looking forward to it for almost a year but good lord did it disappoint. And yeah.. I saw the hair.. and my first thought to was "Why is there a giant cock in the foreground?"
The kid actors can't act their way out of a wet paper bag. The editing is absolute shit. The special effects, in general, suck. Ugh.
The editing is the worst part, really, in my opinion. It feels like there was an hour of movie just hacked away and replaced with halfassed narration or stuff that was just mentioned in passing

I hope they don't edit the penis hair from the DVD version 'cause I'll keep an eye out for it. I knew this movie was going to be horrible and I can't believe that the movie is that monochrome and dark. The cartoon was very colorful and lively and it had really good character and plot development... and this movie seems to have none of that.
Thanks for the review 'cause now I know not to waste my money on this unless I just really want to see penis hair. And I think I can live without that.

Brad,
Thanks for the honest and hilarious view of this movie! However, Snob to Snob, even if you've never seen the show (which I'd highly recommend), at least take the time to remember character names (or actor's names) if you are talking about the film: sorry to be picky, but I'd like to know what you're talking about specifically when you say "Character A" or "Character B".
Thanks!

Great review. Thanks for reviewing this movie. I was going to watch this but then decided against it. I'll go see Toy Story 3 instead to be honest. I like the movie, "Hook," by the way. That movie was fun even if it had plot holes and cheesy parts in it.

Well I was a massive fan of the show and bought all 3 DVDs. I cannot think of a single cartoon (Bebop, Trigun, and others) that tells such a rich, deep, character driven story with numerous people crossing paths and motives. Oh no. I wanted this movie to be decent at least. I love the show, really, for a kid's show it's absolutely amazing! Epic story, beautiful fight scenes, cute/cool/badass characters. I didn't have high hopes anyway (after seeing the director and the casting choices), but it's sad that there wasn't more creative effort put into it. You could make an AWESOME movie with this material... but I guess they just didn't.
Reply to this
I heard it sucked, but I don't really care about the movie or the show, so whatever. What bums me out is that people say "it's so bad, it's not even funny".
I almost NEVER find a movie so bad that I can't like it. Battlefield Earth is a favorite of mine, as are some other bad movies. The only two movies I have ever found so bad that they aren't redeemable for their awfulness, ironically enough, are praised.
Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill Vol. 2. Those two movies are SOO bad, that they are an insult to everything that I like about movies. They feel like they are trying to be George Lucas, Stanley Kubrick, The Coen Brothers, and Martin Scorsese, and can't even match Michael Bay. Tarantino's work is so awful that I would rather commit suicide than watch one of his films, and yet, somehow, he gets PRAISED for bad writing, lackluster direction, and annoying "style". It pisses me off. He's like Bruno Mattei, except stupider, even more obvious of a rip off, and annoying beyond all belief. Just think logically about most scenes in KBV2 and Pulp Fiction, and you'll find so many logical fallacies that it's mindblowing.

This movie was really only made for the fans, hence the confusion outsiders will feel towards the half-baked shit going on in it. It's a movie for the fans that wastes its time explaining its Frankensteined plot to newcomers (in regards to the dumb idea of squashing season 1 into 1hr4omin). F@cking awful...
Now all I need is to watch you tear into Eclipse and my year'll be complete.

From what I understand it's barely even a movie for the fans because the fans expected much more. I never expected much, but I'm disappointed that the film's so reviled that people who have never experienced the series may never do so now.

Brad- Thanks for giving me the lowdown on Air Bender. Damn. This is depressing. It's not that I ever followed the old cartoon. I didn't. But, there has not been one really big, deal epic sci-fi fantasy blockbuster this year. I did not like Avatar. And, I didn't like Iron Man 1 so I'm not interested in 2. I guess I'll have to wait until Fall and Harry Potter (I'm a BIG Potter fan) before there is a BIG movie to validate my puny, mere mortal existence. At least I've got you Brad, and Spoony and TGWTG Team. I'll just have to be content with the so-called "epic" sci-fi I'm trying to type out on my computer every night. It's the blockbuster scifi movie in my head. Sure, it might suck in the end. I don't know. Why should that be any different in my Epic Fail existence? But it is a beautiful day outside. Maybe I should stop being such a big nerd for a few hours and go outside and soak in some sunshine. Hmmm....The Real World. I've heard other people talk about it. But I've never really been too much about forcing myself into it. I hear there's this thing in the real world called "female women". Some say they are the givers of pain and delight. I don't know. I should check it out some time.

I haven't seen many 3D movies before this. Actually, only "Up" so far. As I watched this in a 3D theater, I kept thinking that some idiot bumped the brightness control on the projector. Even without the glasses it was like a solar eclipse in there! This movie was dreary and dismal in both visuals and characterization. The chunks I was able to catch of the Airbender TV series charmed me with its mythology and goofy but developed characters, and this movie was a pinhole camera representation of that universe.

Honestly, I hated the series. For the same reason that I hated Teen Titans; it tried so damn hard to be a generic anime. But that aside, I just couldn't get into it. All this "BEST ANIMATED SERIES EVAR!1!11!!1!!!" nonsense annoys me greatly. Go watch The Maxx, Batman the Animated Series, Aeon Flux, and such.
That aside, it freaking SUCKS that fans got boned so hard. I know how it feels, I'm still recovering from the Resident Evil movies. I hate it when this happens, it's just painful to see a license that people love so much gets straight up raped by someone who has no right to make a movie about it. I'm sorry, Avatar fans. If it makes you feel any better, there are rumors of Nick greenlighting a new series. So there's that.

I'll say this: Night Shyamalan had a pretty hard task to squeeze the first season of Avatar ( yes that's how I'll always remember the show) in 100 minutes. For fuck sakes the other Avatar and fucking Transformers got 160 minutes probably because of hype and pedigree.
Probably some big exec that produced The Last Airbender wanted everything that happens in the series to be in the movie and to have such a short running time. Fuck, this could have been so awesome and what we are left with is just another proof that TV series for me will immerse you more in the world created by it's writer than a movie that could live or die by it's running time and how well they condense the story.

Great review, really enjoyed it. But on the other hand its really sad that the movie did so poor since it had so much potential.
Its really a shame considering that.

I'm really sorry to hear that this movie was crap. I'm a big fan of the show. The first season was by far the weakest but still very good. What really upsets me is that this will probably ruin anyone's desire to see the show if they haven't yet. Brad, I hope you can get your hands on a few episodes and maybe give your thoughts on it. It sounds like they stripped out everything that made the show fun and interesting.

I'm just unsure as to why everyone hates this movie! I really enjoyed all the scenery and all the different people. No one has been specifically clear as to why they didn't like the movie except that they actors were bad! I liked the actors...I thought they did a good job. I think you hated this movie because everyone else hates this movie. You went into the movie hating it so you already had expectations to hate it.
I just thought everything was pretty and I think the kid actors were fine. I think anyone playing the roles would've played it the same.

Meh, the movie didn't bother me, but then again, "Dragon Wars" didn't either. I'm beginning to worry that I've seen too many Steven Seagal movies and my tastes are beginning to drop.
Anyway, good points. I also felt that this didnt feel like an M. Night Shyalaman movie. M. Night usually spends a lot of time on characters/dialogue(which in his previous movies tended to backfire), but "The Last Airbender" didnt have the usual M. Night pitfalls. I suspect that the studio hijacked the production.

Seriously Penis Hair. I just dont believe it cs, just that I cant believe that the censors in the us would let it go. It supposed to be a kids film and I would imagine that any phallac shaped hair would be cut. We are lucky in uk to have bbfc shame they wont let caligula through in its original form.
To M. Night, I loves the village it reminded me of the howling and other red riding hood movies, I loved unbreakable and sixth sense. I have never seen lady in the wat having been told its an egotistical piece for m. night. I have never seen this show however it is coming on so I will give it a watch.

Quick note. I haven't bothered to see this but I saw the Fire Lord (the Big Bad)guy in a preview, and it's not Asif Manvi, though I can see the resemblance. Just to confirm, I looked it up on imdb. It's Cliff Curtis, who's not actually a bad actor. I wouldn't say he's great, but he's not bad.
That aside, the reason I haven't bothered with this movie is that I like the show and my expectations for the movie were about what you say it actually is. Big hairy cock in your face. Isn't it nice when they give you such lovely metaphors for the movie's quality right in the film itself, like getting tea bagged by Michael Bay with Transformers 2.

SOMEONE ELSE REMEMBERS DRAGON WARS?
I was taken to see it by two misguided friends. It was EXACTLY the terrible viewing experience I had with this movie. I'm just shocked someone else out there remembers it, too.
I'll add that that I think the child actors aren't entirely at fault. They're probably very competent, they just have so little experience, they would fall into the trap of someone's misdirection EASILY, unlike more seasoned acting veterans.

Soooo....Am I the only one who actually liked the movie? sure, they had to cut out a lot from the series, but they managed to keep the general gist of it, at least i thought so. I actually thought it was really good...pity they probably won't be making the other two movies...

Fun Fact! The guy who plays Rufio in that Hook movie you hate does the voice of Zuko in the Avatar TV show.

I liked it with complaints.
Of course it might not hurt to boot M. night off the set, but still I hope they do.

I'd have to say the only performances I liked in this movie were 1) Shaun Toub as Iroh 2) Dev Patel as Zuko and 3) Aasif Mandvi as Zhao. And even they were weak.
I will say this for The Last Airbender: it's not the Star Wars Holiday Special. It's DAMN CLOSE, though.
I missed the penis hair, unfortunately.
The show is a hell of a lot better, though, and Mandvi's character is seriously awesome in the show. Zhao is a badass. Iroh goes above and beyond the call of duty on that front, though.

I think there needs to be a three film rule implemented in hollywood. that many crappy films and said director is permanently banished. Yeah that probably won't work.
I don't understand how he got funding for it. And that much funding- and for a Nickelodeon cartoon...? I would think at best an animated feature. And why M. Night Shamalayan? This whole project was so bizarre. Maybe some studio exec owed shamalayan a huge favor.

It is a HORRIBLE movie & the effects are attrotious. I agree 100% with that. But when you are a fan of the movie it is VERY RIFFABLE. Mostly because they get so much wrong. In fact in the movie when Iroh makes fire & they men say "he's making fire from nothing" that is the funniest line in it because making fire from nothing is kinda the fire nations thing!

The only thing I can say in defense for this movie's review is that the statement about sports (games), is that his correction was accurate ONLY if you understand that the Avatar is just a reincarnation of past lives. So past and present tense can both be used. But... the fact that I can only defend that is sad as hell. I'm genuinely hurt because I'm an anime fan and NO ONE has made a good anime movie yet. Maybe never will. This may very well have killed all hopes of that. Thanks M. Don't touch a sequel. I hope there is one, to redeem the story, but... eh. I'd rather not think about it too hard. I actually blame the casting director more than anyone else. Even if I weren't a fan of the series, I'd know that something was up; the people in the movie seemed like they were as lost as I am. Was.

Wow, I'm surprised no one mentioned the absolutely ridiculous tai chi shit all the characters did for their bending crap. From what I can tell, all you need to conquer this world is a bunch of guys who are quick on their feet and some bows. While they're doing their overly elaborate maneuver to create a water sphere, shoot 'em in the face. You win! This movie was awful. I'm also surprised Mr. Jones didn't point out that all of the people in the southern water village were Inuit with the exception of the two kids and their grandma. Horrible casting on all fronts.
