I don't hate topher grace, but I feel like this movie and spider man 3 could have been made with out him. I actually think he did a good job in spider man 3 but he didn't fit, he was sorta just thrown in, he doesn't look anything like eddie brock either, he's a good actor but he just doesn't belong in some movies. AVP was made for kids, it was PG13. But both AVPs were garbage. I love predator 1 and 2 though.

The movie made me no longer ashamed to have a Predator tattoo. I REALLY liked how they dealt with the competing clans, but then again, I'm a geek for this series and the Alien series...I have tattoos of them for chrissakes.
I just depressed myself.

I totally agree Brad, this movie wasn't perfect but damn was it fun! Some reviewers have nit-picked this movie to death but if you take it as a whole it's just a fun Predator movie and a worthy sequel to the franchise.
Also we forgive you for not having a Snob video up, I mean you broke your foot man! We forgive you...this time.

Well Brad first off you deserved some time off fro the foot because you post a lot. And second this was a great predator movie. All I really hated about it was that the predators that we grew up with where put down as the smaller weaker predators and these new ones were the "wolves" of the two. You know these Predators that have to bring their prey into a jungle planet that they hunt in regularly so know every nook and cranny of are better and more dangerous than the frikkin predators that hunt their prey on unfamiliar ground, hell even ground thats better known by their prey like in two. It was just we have our own predators their cool and those old ones just suck.

The crates had the other aliens in it. The ones that had the bugs in their skin. And the 2 waring predators types is a big thing from the comics where its just 2 diffrent clans.

You like it that they make this boring generic movie which is basically a total RipOff the first Predator and tell me "wow it's not a remake"?
I mean seriously, how many "a bunch of people running through a forest and getting killed one by one" movies can you watch?
You tell me "the movies builds up tension"? I mean is there any second in this movie when you dont know whats going to happen?
This movie has no ideas, it brings nothing to the table, it has no reason to exist (apart from making money of course).
I really can't believe that people like you dig this shit. There could be a real Predator 3 with you know, a story and characters and stuff like that, that tells us something new, that takes some risks.
Instead we get this shitty boring degenerated RipOff.

Dude you can nit pick anything but this Predators movie is a step in the right direction, like Brad said its for the fans and it tells Hollywood that this is what we want not shit like AVP.
The fact we see different Predator clans is a nice set up for furthering the Predator Universe.
In the end you gotta take it for what it is and thats an 80's style action flick that spits one liners much like the first movie it just feels right and Rodriguez knew and repected the first two movies and it shows. Some fans will always bitch and moan.

I agree with your review for the most part, though you didn't mention the pace of the movie. For whatever reason it felt really rushed, like it felt most of the content was cut. I'm not sure if you picked up on that like me and my friend did, but it just kind of jumped really quickly through parts. I'm thinking when they release it on DVD, like a directors cut edition, it will be much longer and I think probably more developed.

Brad- Hi. Glad you had a good time and Famous Monsters. Don't worry about the content. You deserve a break just like anyone else. Rest up. Get better. And, when you're ready, please give me that review on the old 80's classics "Krull" "Sword and the Sorcerer" and other Richard Lynch flicks like "Vampire" and "DeathSport". Hell, you know what would be really cool? I would love for you to get an interview with Richard Lynch. Or maybe Simon MacCorkindale. Or anybody associated with "Sword and the Sorcerer". I mean, David Caradine is dead (in an interesting way no less, but dead all the same) you have to get these interview for future generations to study. It's like your duty to History man. Just a thought.

I'll never understand why people didn't like Predator 2 so much. That movie was great. Oh it didn't have Schwarzenegger in it, so what. I loved to see Danny Glover playing in the second and I'm a big fan of him and Arnold. Maybe I'll never understand the hate because the first time I saw on TV Predator 2 and than Predator a year later. So maybe I judged the two movies on their own merits not the second as an obligatory continuation.
As for Predators, yeah it's really good. A nice throw back or nostalgia trip. My only observation to your review Brad is you said they dropped the ball when they showed the captured Predator. I don't think they did. As you said the movie is made for fans so the fans probably expected to see the Predator revealed in some macho way. The director wanted to show us that this time the rules of the hunting have changed a little and even the predator can become the prey. I think that scene was pretty ingenious.
Still great review and the videos you posted from the convention were really good, so don't worry that much and get well.

LLOYD!!!!....Honestly, I didn't like Predators all that much. I think what killed it for me was they seemed to be reaching alot for taglines. Plus, did you notice the Preds bleeding day-glo blood?

Predators is what it is:a fast moving action monster movie with a big splash of the Dirty Dozen. I like the tribal rivalry thing, I like the hunting dogs, Latino girls looking pensive with huge armour piercing sniper rifles is never a bad thing and Lawrence Fishburne is always good value. Adrian Brody, I'm not so keen on. He's a good actor, but this kind of film needs a larger than life action hero. His innate actorly seriousness looked a little misplaced here. Basically it needed someone like Jason Statham.
I am now going to say something really stupid. I liked AVP2. It reminded me of things like the Boogens and Humanoids from the Deep., just an entertaining dumb monster movie. The hospital scene was properly nasty and mean spirited!I didn't see it as having any real relationship to Alien or Predator or even AVP. It was more like Critters or something. Anyway fuck off AVP2 is is good. I've been watching alien films for years. I am a a proper fan and I still like it. Alien was never supposed to have sequels, anyway. Dan O'Bannon didn't think it needed sequels. Ridley Scott respects the sequels so much he's doing a prequel just so he can underline the fact that Alien has nothing to do with the franchise! So AVP2 is at least as legitimate as Alien 3. And it's better too. Because it's gorier and shorter. Damn it, I just like watching aliens and predators! They could make one a week, featuring the cast of Glee and I would still watch them with a big stupid grin on my face. And I've got Tarkovsky. Pasolini and Orson Welles films!Actually the more I think about the more I realise that AVP2 is a masterpiece, the Guernica of monster movies. Predators is much better than AVP2. So by definition it is a monumental work of towering genius. Brad, you need to tell people the truth insted of all this faux objective critic stuff. Predators is fantastic.

I like Predator 1 and 2 a lot and this new Predator actually looks pretty good.
I think Predator 2 goes well with the first. The city environment just works well and the Predator gets so much to play around with and the Predator has more personality in Predator 2.
I even enjoyed AVP 2 (not 1 though) with its b-movie vibe, but I can understand why people don't like it.

In defense of the reveal, technically it wasn't the actual reveal, as it was the classic Predator that was strung up. I saw the REAL reveal as when it's zooming through the jungle with all the Super Predators de-cloaking, I thought that was pretty bad ass.

Actually it was Billy who was killed off screen on Predator. In my opinion, they ruined his character by making him scream.
But anyways, I was wondering what happened to your foot? Did you fall? Or did you try to do something you couldn't during Kung Tai Ted?

Jesus, maybe you need to watch some better movies. I went in with no expectations at all and was bored to death. And the ending was downright terrible. Damsel in distress (even though she was pretty capable for the other 100 minutes), nonsense villain turn, bland main character survives, for some reason, etc. Granted it's a little better than AvP, but I don't think it's nitpicky to say it's just not a well-crafted film.
It was good that they used the music, though.

What would have been awesome if there was a Kurtwood Smith Predator that walked around calling Topher Grace a dumbass or threatened to put his foot in his ass all the time. I was curious as to what character Grace was playing. I never guessed the Steve Buscemi from "Con Air," but I suppose it works.

Predators is great. I like virtually any monster, creature or alien films. I even like ones universally acknowledged to be terrible. If I can sit through and enjoy things like Prehistoric shark or Dinoshark or whatever it's called, Mega Piranha, Mutants and Unearthed I can say without any hint of irony that Predators is a masterpiece.
The haters are just cynics trying to look more mature than they are. Creature features are inherently great, because they just are. As for the complaint that Predators does nothing new! Virtually no genre or sub genre film ever does anything new. Unless you can explain to me exactly how every cop film, every slasher, every zombie, every revenge movie and every other genre work you can think of breaks new ground, I flatly refuse to take the idea that Predators is a rehash seriously. If you truly believed that originality was important then you would have precisely one example of every type of film and there would be no genres and sites like this would not exist.
Anyone interested in low budget creature features should check out Greg Connors Dark Lurking. It's Australian and pretty good.

I only put Mega Piranha in there because of the reviews. I like it. I like virtually all monster, creature and alien movies ever made. It's the one area of films where my inner big kid never really fails to kick in. As far as I'm concerned none of Sci-Fi's creature films are as bad as their rep.
Just about the only monster movie I don't like is Cloverfield and that's because I loved the build up and was really disappointed by the actual film. Mainly because it isn't really a film. It's just random footage of a lot rich young people whining and crying like big babies until a creature mercifully eats them.

Great review, and even better movie. Saw it on opening night at midnight, and after the nightmares that were the AVP films, it was so nice to see this franchise make a triumphant return.
One thing I want to point out about your review is that your complaint about the movie revealing the Predator "Too soon" is a little off to me. This movie was made for fans like you said, and fans know what the Predator looks like. Hell between the original and the AVP films, a lot of people know what they look like by now. But that wasn't the REAL reveal, the REAL reveal was when the 3 Super Predator un-cloaked as the camera zoomed past them, and I felt that was one of the most badass shots in the film. Still, glad to see you liked it.

PREDATORS was a cheap, boring, piece of shit with some of the worst CGI I have ever seen (those PREDATOR DOG things that were a rip off of Brotherhood of the Wolf were abysmal).
The first 40 minutes were just people walking around with airsoft guns in some local forrest park with no action and a shit script. I was THAT close to walking out and demanding a refund.
With better films like District 9 ($30 Million Budget) and Avatar ($200 Million) I think PREDATORS ($40 Million) should've gone straight to DVD.

AVATAR was awesome, yes and I do like it, along with the Millions of others who saw it repeatedly and pushed its worldwide takings to nearly $3 Billion because I got my money's worth and it was an inventive film that pushed technological boundaries and was yet another James Camerons classic.
PREDATORS was a cheap piece of shit and the entire audience groaned at how bad it was during my screening.
If Universal Soldier- Regeneration with a budget of $14 Million could outdo PREDATORS then that film should've gone straight to DVD.

I continue to maintain that the Friday the 13th "remake" was not a remake, it was just a sequel that didn't follow continuity. Nothing in terms of kills or story was recycled except Jason's origin story.
I'm glad to hear that this Predator movie turned out good. I'm always up for retro throw-backs to 80's sci-fi/action/horror. The Topher Grace twist is lame, the moment you brought him up I thought the same thing as you, "He's either a spy or a psycho; I'm leaning towards psycho."
I do agree about the music thing with all of these "remakes." The music was a big part of the atmosphere of the original films, and that seems kind of obvious, yet they don't take advantage of it. I'm trying to remember now whether or not the Rob Zombie Halloween movies made proper use of the theme, but it's been so long since I've seen them that I simply cannot recall.

Made for fans? After reading some of the fan reviews on IMDB as well as seeing both your review and Angry Joe's (yes, he did beat you to it) I'm not really convinced. Predator 1 & 2 were two of my favorite sci-fi action films when I first saw then as a kid and the very reason these films were so amazing is because the predator was nearly as indestructible and nearly as powerful as either of the Terminator models, which made you really wonder throughout the film how the **** anyone could possibly manage to kill him and sit in suspense waiting for any of the main characters to finally succeed in doing so after going through a **** of a lot of ****. That's the most bad@$$ you can get in a movie and that's what made both the Terminator and Predator franchises as popular as they were in those days (besides Arnie Swarzie of course).
Based on what I've read and heard so far about this film, the predators in "Predators" are pussies (which totally ruins the concept), the storyline is but a weak rehash of the first (a remake without calling it a remake), the cast is fairly poorly chosen (Adrian Brody?!?), the new elements are plain silly (like the predator vs predator war or the serial killer), etc. So please remind me again what you like about this film and why you think it's anything but a mediocre attempt to make some money off what once used to be one of the most interesting sci-fi action franchises and why a fan of the orriginal 2 movies should watch it?!?

Do you not think, that you are taking the film a bit too seriously or have simply outgrown the Predator concept?
There's just a child-like joy in watching big mean critters stomping around and hero's with over-sized weapons blasting stuff. Predators has a good director who clearly grew up liking this kind of thing. It also has some good actors and a couple of nice in-jokes, one critter is a nod at the original rejected Van Damme portrayed beast. True it doesn't reinvent the wheel. The original predators aren't pussies in it ether. I took the berserker predators to be from a less socially evolved culture. They lacked the moral codes of the evolved predator society, hence they were happy to hunt women and hunt out of season. The real pradators are traditionalists, they probably see the berserkers as uncultured psychos. It's also a novel idea to show that alien worlds might have cultural divisions and rivalries.
But the important thing is really, that it's just a cool action creature feature that reduces some of us to the level of a twelve-year-old.

Did you even watch the first two Predator movies? The Predator was far from being close to a Terminator type being. If you could land a hit on the Predator, he fucking felt that shit. He bled all over the place, felt pain, and even had to do surgery on himself just to keep on going. Rent the damn movies.

Wow, just ... wow.
First: Predators and Terminators have absolutely nothing in common. At all. The former has advanced weaponry, yet the only thing that makes him more resilient then his fellow meatbags is his cloak and stealthy approach. The T1000 got hit by grenade launcher rounds and barely flinched for god's sake.
Second: You might want to watch the movie instead of going on a tirade based on hearsay. Makes you look a bit less like an idiot when you go all Serious Business like on someone else's opinion about a movie that never pretended to be more then an fun action flick about some guys brawling with aliens.

Awesome review. Though about them dropping the ball on the reveal. It wasn't about the reveal of the original Predator it was the reveal of the super Predators. The shot of the original was to be like "wait so if that's tied up..who the fuck is hunting them?!"
I hope they make a next one that delves a bit into this civil war between Predators. Now they've played it safe and brought people back to the "Predator" franchise, they can move ahead and expand the Predator universe.

Very good, and fair, review. I don't agree with you at all, though. I found "Predators" to be dull and lifeless, devoid of suspense, humor, and excitement, but happy to march out plenty of worn-out cliches. It did nothing for me.

Minor disagreement when it comes to which AvP was worse. Yes; AvP:R had gore but the plot was completely stupid and nonsensical. At least AvP had structure and some interesting ideas going for it. Unfortunately; being slightly better than its sequel does not a good film make.

As a member of the 80'd generation, I LOVED Predators. This reminded me of all the fun I had as a teen going to the movies. I wish there was more Fishburne in it, but when he was in it he was awesome. Glad you are doing better with the foot.

Thank you Robby Rod for a decent Predator movie. It was still weaker than the first two but it was still a movie I would have absolutely loved had it come out a couple years after Predator 2. Less CG would have made it even better. Great flick and definitely going into the DVD collection right next the first two. Now if only they could make a new decent Alien movie and no more of those AVP nightmares. Fuck those movies.

I think they don't talk about the second one because Predators, I feel on a hunch, is the JUMPING POINT to Predator 2. Thus this is pre-1997.
I really enjoyed the movie. It was fast, fun, with great moments and a lot of hidden intrigue. Did you see the underlying theme of Suffering vs Death? It's all over the flick.

I love the Yakuza vs Predator scene too and the ending credits just because of the fact you have Adrian Brody being all badass with the chick say the last line of dialogue, and then happy go lucky opening music from the first movie! That completely through me through a loop XD

This was a cool movie, finally a great modern follow up to one of the most cherished movies of my childhood. just the part where Fishburne showed up someone in the theater yelled "HOLY SH*T ITS COWBOY CURTIS!!!!" and every cracked up. There was just a sense of unity with the whole crowd in the theater I have never felt before. I saw it on the midnight release, I feel every one was united because we have all been waiting for this since we saw Glover getting black beards pistol the first time. Also the part where the Yakuza fights the Predator some one in the theater yelled out "I AM ASIAN AND EVEN I AM OFFENDED" but yet it was fun and everyone had a blast in the crowd.

old video i know sorry, but:
i'm with you on pretty much everything except AVP. i've read all of a single issue of the comics, and played maybe ten minutes of one of the games. now, i keep hearing people say stuff to the effect of "this movie(meaning the first one) sucks; it completely misses the [whatever]." here's the thing: my experience with AVP prior to the movies was the Stephen Perry books, and i thought they were great(i was about 14, mind you, and haven't read them since). now, as a fan of that series, i love the first AVP movie. it's very much in line with those stories,right down to the girl allying herself with the Predator and him giving her a "bloodmark" at the end. this is OT to the video, but this was kinda the last straw. anyway, i imagine that's where the split is. if you liked the Perry novels you liked AVP;if you grew up on the comics you preferred Requiem(which is a bad movie either way, but has more in common with the comics as far as i can tell).
