1.I like open endings that secretly have a solution, such as the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey. There are many details littered throughout the film that leads the ending to what the ending is supposed to be. If Inception gives clues, no matter how obscure, to the "open ending", then it would be a great film if it had a conclusion about what it was supposed to be. Another example is Full Metal Jacket. It doesn't even seem like there is anything involving dreams, but it turns out that the scene with Pyle being beaten with soap and the scene where Pyle commits suicide are both dream sequences.
2.I never change my style either. In fact, I don't even change the look of my pants. I always wear slacks (never jeans, I hate them), Reebok shoes and a band shirt. Even when it's raining, even when it's super hot out, I always wear exactly that, except also underwear and socks. Reply to this

Eh, saw it last week. Pretty much what I expected; just another generic Hollywood action movie with very little resonance. It was also a complete ripoff of "The Matrix," I'm sorry to say. Some of the stuff about dream-psychology at the beginning was interesting, but that's pretty quickly sidelined in favor of car-chases, running around, firing machine guns, explosions, etc. Not to mention, there was nothing even remotely dreamlike about the world inside Cillian Murphy's head (the Ellen Page dream/Limbo settings were well-done, though). Had the same script been directed by a less popular director, nobody would've cared.
Of course, the music was really cool, that I agree with. It wasn't terrible but it was pretty much just "meh." The especially-strange thing about this movie was that it actually seemed like it would have been appropriate to make it in 3-D (unlike all the other trashy 3D movies that have been coming out), yet it was seemingly the first 2010 Summer Blockbuster to come out in 2D. Still i guess, that those who Get these movies better, like some academic peoples will rant about this movie more and more until they buy it on DVD or Blue Ray and then rant more and more.I guess in the future Peoples will add on their will to be buried with this movie or cremate them self with this movie, because it is SOOOO Cleaver. Am I the only one who hated the music for this? The credit of "composer" for Hans Zimmer is rather misleading due to the massive team of editors and arrangers he has behind him. Academically I would say the music was mediocre; loud, yes but, not "fantastic". However, sticking with sound, I think the unsung heroes of this film are the sound designers. But come on, INCEPTION IS A BIT BORING. Yes it's visually impressive, but so is a tree. Every second scene is yak, blah, yak. Here's my theory. It doesn't mean anything. Ambiguous endings used to serve a narrative purpose, now they just mean some insecure writer or director is refusing to commit to an idea because they're scared of disappointing people or hearing a collective groan. This is what shot LOST in the end. It's ambiguity as a narrative cliche. It's rapidly becoming the norm, like the way modern horror films can't let hero's escape without adding a "shocking" coda. The only thing I thought about the ending of Inception was, they're setting up a sequel. All Nolan's films have a slightly retarded mentality, which basically amounts to "this film is dark" so it can't feature humour, because being funny is silly and I want my films to be taken seriously, even if they feature a man running around in rubber fetish gear. If Nolan was a girl he would be a Twilight fan. If you're going to make a film featuring interconnected dreams put some sex, proper violence and jokes in there. Reply to this

"Inception" was decent, but Christopher Nolan didn't get dreams right - not in the same way David Lynch can. The internal logic he develops is not accurate, because in dreams, people don't always speak and behave in the same way as they do in reality, things don't always make sense, and often there is, in the end, no point whatsoever to a dream. I mean they show this scene with Ellen Page moving the street around 180 degrees, but this "trick" never comes up again. I am waiting for a sequel that more uses the possibilities of this dream scenario regarding the graphics and pictures (didn't like the limbo scene with the falling cliffs).

Hey bro, great review-- long time watcher, first time commenter. Just to let you know though, "Cillian" is pronounced "Killian" not "Sillian"-- it's a Gaelic thing... Anyway, keep on trucking

SPOILER ON ENDING WARNING:
I happen to think it was not a dream at the end due to one particular thing I noticed. In the first scene when Cobb sees the aged Saito, there's a shot where Cobb has his hands folded and you see his golden wedding ring. When he is in reality talking to Michael Kane for example, he does not have the wedding ring on. I noticed he only wears the ring in the dream worlds and at the end scene he wasn't wearing the ring. I don't trust the top because it wasn't a totem he himself created, but was something he wife owned. Just my take on it.

Cillian Murphy's name is actually pronounced as if it were spelled with a K, being Celtic.
It's his berserk button.
...
This has been for future reference and totally not a Douche bag correction dealy.

Okey..i think i will now to try and vent my thoughts...
First off,i have some kind of bitterness toward movies, that are hyped as hell, for giving thoughts and being movies that some "better than you" film critic snobs are then talking and praising to the roof...But after i talk with my friend about this i have to say that this movie has it all to all. Those, who are studied and who know movie history/meanings etc better can amaze that aspect on this movie and those who just enjoy a cool effects and action, can enjoy that.
I really liked Characters on this movie, specially on Eames(i think that was his name),he was da man.I didnt follow the entire way on this movie, and i guess its not a mortal sin or anything..i dont care that and if some Snobby Movie Know-it-all starts to rant me on it,i tell him to go Fuck himself. But i Also liked Effects,They were awesome and Music was as good as in The Dark Knight. Also Humor and whole dreaming-concept was cool.

They've created a soundscape so detailed and vast that it makes a lot of other current films look lazy in comparison.

If the plot was so simple, how did you get it so wrong? They weren't trying to steal anything from Cillian Murphy at all. They try to implant the idea for him to break up his company. No theft involved.
Reply to this
He does say it's about implanting an idea. He merely compared the approach the film takes to that of heist films.

At least to me the end was clear. Not saying it is the end like it maybe was meant, but as i see it like you said there was no reason it to be dream.
It was more about this world being all that real not about if he was still in the dream world.

THANK YOU! The ending was pointless. Everything else was awesome. They hit the climax, the movie comes full circle, gets back to where it starts from....and suddenly the scene cuts abruptly and we're given that "ending" that just made me feel like they didn't feel like finishing the damn story. It was really awesome aside from that though.

I fucking hated the score... so dull and unmelodic. OOhhh you slowed down an Edith Piaf song! OSCAR GOLD!

I liked that the film was essentially a heist but with ideas and thought over money. I am in the camp that things its a dream because Cain says get back to reality and eveyone is looking at him in the end.
I thought you lived in Missouri and that is south from Chicago where we get more humidity.

I think you brought up a valid point about the ending not being a deal-breaker but not being up to snuff with the rest of the film. A also am not a JGL fan and I can't explain why either. Overall I loved the film and think Nolan has the Oscar wrapped up so far.

Mere days after this review goes up the expected availability of eXistenZ on Netflix goes from 'now' to 'long wait' Coincidence? I think not.

Thank you! Brad, you had the first review I've see that compared Inception to Existenz, and that was the very first movie that popped into my mind when thinking similar movies. And again, agreed, Existenz=most excellent movie (jude law is made of win) Btw.. NY=disgusting humidity. I feel your pain.

I gota say i believe that at least in the end he was still in limbo. If you watch closely everyones always watching him when he gets off the plane and stuff. my bro already said that he was acting suspicous so that i believe dont count. but in the end when you see his kids they havnt aged at all. im not sure how long he was away but it sounded to me that he was gone a long enough while when he was talking to his kids on the phone. just tossing in my 2 cents hope maybe at least 1 other person out there thaught same thing. i honestly havnt looked at any of the stuff people say about the ending but if someone else said this sorrys ^^;; love the reviews man keep it up

It was a very good movie for sure, but it did have a few gaping plot holes that i had a hard time ignoring. It's the kind of subject matter that's very hard to make a full fledged story about, while at the same time making total sense and keeping it completely logical. But despite a few plot holes, it came together pretty well in the end.

So his logic is too safe and too reliable for it to seem accurate.

Great movie, although your comment on the effects of 2012 made me angry. I agree Inception had amazing effects, but 2012's were just as good.
Reply to this
2012 I remember well because it was the only movie I watched while living for 5 months in Sweden and it was horrible (Acting, Effects, Story...)
Inception is way better. Big Christopher Nolan Fan (even The Following) except for Insomnia.
But Inception has some weak points. Neither the story nor the characters were "outdeveloped". I mean they show this scene with Ellen Page moving the street around 180 degrees, but this "trick" never comes up again.
I am waiting for a sequel that more uses the possibilities of this dream scenario regarding the graphics and pictures (didn't like the limbo scene with the falling cliffs). And also developes further the characters.
BTW: Di Caprio. Absolutely. You know it's gonna be a good movie. Never would have thought about this ten years ago

The thing about the ending, I saw it as Cobb not really caring any longer if it was real or not; or I guess another way you could look at it would be that he finally saw their faces and believed it to be real.
My own interpretation is that he wasn't dreaming.
