Devil is the first of the three "Night Chronicles" movies. Shyamalan had plans to do an Unbreakable sequel but instead of doing a seques he turned his story for Unbreakable 2 into the third yet untitled "Night Chronicles" movie. So, in a way we are going to see another Unbreakable movie. It just isn't gonna be under the Unbreakable title.

When I saw the trailer, i thought it was interesting, but i admit when M. Night's name came up there was a loud collective groan from the audience from the audience and I was part of it. I told myself the only way I'd prolly see this movie would be if i didn't have to pay.

Thursday, I won 2 free tickets to the midnight showing. The schadenfreude loving universe provides.

I went a friend laughing the whole time expecting something bad but surprisingly I walked out loving this movie. As Brad says, it's entertaining as hell. So much so that I recommended it to friends with similar tastes in movies as I do and we're planning to go see it as a group this weekend.

In terms of writing, wouldn't it be possible that M Night ended up doing a rewrite at some point in the process? From what I understand about the Hollywood process, only the person who worked on the first draft of the script gets the actual writing credit. So it could very well be that M Night ended up doing a rewrite late in the process and put his stamp on it that way.

As far as direction goes, I haven't seen Quarantine, so maybe someone who has would know if there were signs of those directors shining through. Since this is their first film they didn't also write, the direction seeming like a Night movie may have to do with the script.

Your comment is almost as funny as this movie. Racist? Really? If he makes a bad movie and he happens to not be white anyone calling him on it is racist? I mean, it's not like anyone makes fun of a white guy who makes a bad movie-oh wait, Michael Bay. But it's totally different with him. He's white you know. So if he makes a bad movie, being a white guy and all, you know it's legit bad and not to do with the color of his skin. The leaps in logic-taste notwithstanding-you would have to make to write such a comment is as astoundingly funny as it is racist.

so for 89 minute The Devil is pure entertainment. Who cares whether it's "bad". What if it's supposed to just be a short snappy film with no particular aim beyond being entertaining? When you watch a lot of films its pretty obvious that 99% of dialogue, plotting and character development is barely above the level of functional cliche. At least Night is trying.
And as a long term horror fan, I wouldn't have anything to watch if I didn't accept stupid characters saying and doing stupid things. Night's critics are just jaded and boring.
Horror fans don't need good acting or dialogue or even logical stories. If I can over look the dubbed none performance, logic gaps and random scenes of Italian horror, then I sure as shit can watch Night's films with an open mind. One of my favourite films of all time is The New York Ripper. It doesn't make a bit of sense. The voices don't match the actors, scenes are thrown in for no real reason and the killer quacks, literally quacks, like a duck. It's great. The Happening is no sillier really. So the Devil sounds cool to me.

I loved this movie and I might be one of the few who think its a legitimacy good horror/thriller. Let me explain

The religious security guard is supposed to fulfill a Casandra like role (a prophet that no one believes) and as being the opening narrator it puts us in the set of mind that he is right before the cast of characters do and tells us that the paranormal is real.

The characters where a bit one dimensionalable, but this is an Aesop and I feel that if characters where given more depth the moral might have been muddled. but at times I admit that their actions and dialogue is a bit forced and goofy.

Something you said hits the nail right on the head. that its a 80 min. Twilight Zone episode. sure the M. Night Shyamalan is no Rod Serling (personalty, I consider Mr Serling one of the best play writes of the last century), but he does capture the atmosphere of the Twilight Zone, of the powerful unknown and set morality.

Of course, I feel the same way but a leaser extent about The Happening for similar reasons. but The Happening is more like a Outer Limits episode with the bleaker ending and grayer morality of the plants. and I hate Mark Wahlberg.
STOP BEING IN MOVIES I LIKE MARK WAHLBERG.

-side note-I feel their reaction when the repairman falls on top of the elevator makes sense in ways that are spoilerific.

It seems like the media is so on a hating bandwagon for Night (rightfully so after Airbender and Lady in the Water I suppose) that nothing he does is ever going to be anticipated or given the benefit of the doubt. I dunno. I still wanna see this. I don't think he's a bad director or writer, but... I have to wonder what the hell is going on with him to churn out atrocities like he has been. I can't tell if he wants to make serious movies or ridiculous movies.

The beginning was pretty funny, but after the first murder happened the movie actually got pretty good (except the victims thinking that they're saved when they hear the repairman smash into the elevator). It was actually a pretty well made thriller, except the ending was a little disappointing. I expected some kind of twist in that last scene with Tony.

Here a day later, I still 100% stand by what I said to Brad last night: this movie has no redeeming qualities. The action is non-existent, the characters are either dull and forgettable or over-the-top and forgettable, and the twist is too obvious and underwhelming in its execution.

Like Brad, I went into this movie hoping to give M. Night another chance, though definitely not holding my breath. In the end, for me, this movie failed on every level. The horror parts weren't scary, the thriller parts weren't suspenseful because you never get a chance to get attached to these horrible people, the "humor" is in all the wrong places, but over all, it's just a really boring movie. I know it's only 80-some minutes, but it's a long 80-some minutes. There's just not enough of the main story to go around. If the side plots and padding were cut and this were retooled as an hour long short film, I probably would have liked it a lot more.

I loved it This movie shows that some funny ass lines, suspenseful music, and sound effects are all that's need to make a film scary and fun. Slight SPOILERS

What's hilarious is that I predicted everything before the movie even came out XD The ending didn't surprise me fully because I guessed who was the Devil and figured out some of the other details early on in the movie, but the twist was very nice.

See when I saw the trailer, after laughing my ass off at his name, I look at the people in the trailer and guessed who was the Devil. I went "It isn't him because he's too scruffy looking and will probably be the hero, He's just too obvious. She isn't it because she seems like the main heroine. It isn't him because the devil is behind him in that one shot in the trailer. So in my mind I went It has to be that guy or her because no one would suspect them!

See I watched a lot of mysteries growing up, and my favorite mystery book is "And then There were none" so I was always guessing who would die next and knew who the Devil of the fact that it's the flipping devil so it can be anyone and they can obviously pull a "And then there were none" like the killer in that book.

Plus it doesn't help that in my Horror Story the Villain is someone you would never suspect though it is obvious by her actions.

Anyways I liked it. My favorite characters Lived, the annoying ones died and I figured out the crime that one guy did just as soon after the cop revealed his reason for Grieving XD Well that and the one women coming in.

Anyways I'm glad I listened to you.

Devil looks like the kind of movie I wouldn't want to see, at least if the whole movie is scenes where something pops up to scare me. Those movies piss me off, although "Inland Empire" is an exception that made me laugh with one of those, although I thought the film was genuinely good. The Ring movies, for example, were gimmicky and I didn't like them. The movies that I enjoy that are considered "scary" are things like Evil Dead, Dead Alive, The Shining, Eraserhead, where the "horror" is either psychological or over the top with cheesy. When it gets explicit for trying to be disturbing, it just annoys me, and when it gets to "screamer" moments, I'm just done. None of that.

I personally liked it a lot. I went in expecting to like it a lot less than I actually did, because I thought the movie would spend almost all its time inside the elevator, and I don't like movies that do that. They get boring instead of interesting in my opinion. So I was pleasantly surprised that about half the movie was outside, about the detective and the security guards trying to make sense of what was happening and trying to help them.

I didn't find the religious latino security guard really "hilarious" as Brad did. I don't think he was too exaggerated, and I find his reaction plausible for a believer. His "breakdown" only happens after he sees the face on the camera, and that makes sense. Though the toast thing was pretty funny, or at leas a bad attempt by the character to demonstrate his point (which makes sense in character). Maybe I just wasn't in the mood to laugh, but I can see why someone going in there with his funny bone already half tickled may find this character, and parts of this movie, funny. It's all about being in the right mindset.

Watching the movie, I didn't guess the identity of the Devil until the last part. Though I had my doubts, I wasn't sure. The connection with the survivor and the detective was evident, but not unwelcome.

I don't think Shyamalan went overboard with "twists" as in the past, there was no more "twists" in this movie than in your common horror/supernatural thriller movie. I also like how low-key the "devil"'s interactions were. In a lot of movies, to make the point that the Devil is playing with probabilities, they'll have insane things happening, for example the blade of the saw the firemen were using would have jumped off and killed a few people, or ridiculous set-ups like that (see Final Destination). I found the characters' actions and the events relatively plausible. If you allow for the devil's existence and its coming into the world, then this is what could really happen.

As Brad said, this is a lot like a Twilight Zone episode in a movie format. Start with a simple premise, flesh it out a bit, select a setting and make an episode with it. They started with the idea of the "Devil's Meeting" (don't know if it's a real legend or not, but it's similar to other folklore tales), chose the setting of strangers stuck in an elevator and went along with that.

It was a decent soft "horror" movie. Much better than the typical "horror" movie we get around this time of the year... yeah, fuck Saw! It's become worse than just a bad series of movie (merely torture porn basically), it's so big that film companies refuse to put other horror movies against it before Halloween. That's why the excellent Trick r' Treat got postponed for 2 years and then went straight to DVD. I'm not kidding, look it up.

I think the funniest part for me wasn't actually in the movie itself. When it flashed back to the car accident, I thought to myself, "Oh hey, he's the guy who did it." Then a few minutes later, the detective looks at the note that was left at the crash, and someone in the audience yells out "OH MY GOD" because she just got it.

Even though I didn't think the movie was as funny as this review made it out to be, it was still better than I was expecting it to be, and I did enjoy it, so thank you for the recommendation, Brad.

Thanks for this review. I just saw the movie... it made my day. x3 I actually do admit I kinda wish that the premise genuinely worked as a genuinely good thriller/horror especially since I'm highly claustrophobic and have a terrible fear of being stuck on Elevators. Irrational fear I guess but at least this movie could have exploited it.

Indeed it did make me laugh. More than I expected to do so even after this review.

As far as the moments that did actually work, while it did become a bit repetitive a couple of the times where the lights would go out and all you'd hear is the sound of what was happening in the elevator was kind of creepy.

I don't want to give spoilers out, but the ending had me fooled for the most part but I actually was starting to catch on a little bit but not enough to figure it out in time.

Thanks for the recommendation I needed a laugh. I'll also check out Blackout if it really does successfully pull off a premise like this as you say it does.

I agree it wasn't a really good movie, but certain scenes did entertain me, like the one where the mechanic attempts to shimmy down the elevator shaft and falls. The reaction of the people was just hilarious. "BANG! Oh hey there's a huge dent in the ceiling, I'm sure everything is alright. Hey thanks for helping us mister!"

The ending also totally got me. When I saw this vague silhouette rising from the corpses I was so surprised I nearly shat my pants. Touché movie, touché.

Awesome review Brad, keep 'em coming!

Brad, I saw the film the day it opened with my girlfriend, and I have to tell you, I saw it the ending coming and my gf can attest. I will admit the film makers throw in a few red herrings, but at a certain point you realize there is only one person it can be. I am surprised you were surprised by the ending even if you had not guessed whom the devil was though. I fell like such a twist is used been used in horror films before and i felt that it was not too surprising. Btw, how could you not mention the part where they talk about Twists in the elevator!

In any case, I enjoyed your review though I told my friends to rent the movie, not to see it in the theatre.

I didn't mind this movie, but the toast and "We're saved!" moments gave me a chuckle on the inside. The whole movie experience though was ruined by a bunch of kids who were giggling at the movie...for all the wrong reasons. They thought it was scary and they were laughing at each other for being scared.
