That was actually Christopher Lee as the king with Kuato growing out of his face, Brad. I laughed when I realized it was him.

No problem. It was an honest mistake. I thought it was Sydow too at first, but I realized it was Lee the more he talked because he had that deep voice. When I got home from the movie the other night I had to check imdb to make sure.

By the way, this review is pretty spot on in my opinion. That ending was hilarious.

Speaking of Max von Sydow, what do you think of Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal, or Bergman's other films? I was curious because while they are artsy, I'm not sure (I haven't seen them) if they're pretentious.

I saw it too, and it was gloriously dumb fun, I went in hoping it would be goofy shit, and was happy with it, Perlman and Cage were fun and the girl rocked a Paranormal Activity Katie thing, but I really wanted to comment to say that I thought that was Max von Sydow too! When I looked on IMDB when I got home I went "Christopher Lee? no way!"

Just this weekend, I rented The Sorcerer's Apprentice and all I can say is that it's entertaining at the least, but could've been better than it should.

I don't blame you on the Lee blooper in the video because of all the makeup, but last time I checked that Lee is still making movies including the upcoming Wicker Man '73 sequel The Wicker Tree. Plus, he's working with John Landis on Burke and Hare along with Martin Scorsese on Hugo Cabret!

I'm in the same boat as Brad, I'll see anything with Cage in it (Perlman was just bonus). Yeah this movie on its own merits was.. unimpressive. But watching the actors just bullshit was great. The witch screwing with them the entire movie was pretty good to, the demon wolves scene being a particular favorite.

That of course depends upon the myths. Some tales state that the demons can only know the info if a human or other demonic being requests it. Also the demons can have their info restricted.

I think the demon may have wanted to be undercover since if they had known a demon was coming for a book they would have prepared while looking like a witch they wouldn't have done the preparations for battling a demon.

Also I think it depends on what type of demon is wheter or not they have knowledge of things that they shouldn't have knowledge of.

The only thing I can think of for the demon not just going to the town would be that somehow it didn't know the location of the castle. This still doesn't really make sense, given that in most myths demons have a knowledge of just about everything in the mortal world, but it's the best i can come up with.

Consider this: This actually has a lower Tomatometer score than "The Last Airbender." I just kind of feel pity right now for this movie.

On the heels of watching this review (sweet), my mission now must be to see "Season of the Witch," if only for Ron Perlman, who has been more consistent after his post-Del Toro, post-Jeunet second wind than even a post-Oscar Nicolas Cage, considering all of his unpredictable greatness and infectious hyper-acting.

    That's it...seeing it tonight!

Gods, how I'm fucking tired of reviewers and critics justify all those plainly bad movies as "that's how it's suppose to be" and "actors having fun". Enough already - bad movie is a bad movie, if it's supposed to be bad, it's director's problem - I'm not paying money to see them having fun.

I am a worshiper of The Cage myself, and with that said I found this movie to be extremely depressing. The entire time I could tell that Nic didn't care and looked like he really wanted to be in something good. He usually gives a pretty decent performance in most of the shit that he's in which is why I thought Gone in 60 Seconds was one of the better bad Nic Cage movies because of how involved all of the actors were especially Nic. I thought Season had some pretty funny moments but most of the time I felt embarresed for all the actors and when I got home I was in a very depressed state and I searched through IMDB to see if he will be in anything good coming up. If Ghost Rider 2 isn't any good, than all hope is lost.

Sounds like this thing was just loaded with bullshit Hollywood contrivances.

I read the original Nicholl-winning script and it was far more stripped-back and moody than everything I've heard about the final film.

The whole thing reeks of re-shoots and post-production cluster-fuckery to me.

Excellent review. I loved this movie. Of course I went to see it for Ron Perlman, not Nick Cage. However, I honestly think this movie should be seen at least twice so you can focus on Ron and Nick's characters separately. I was so happy that someone recognized Ron's ability to deliver one-liners. In fact, I think the only person who delivers one-liners better than Ron is Bruce Campbell. Apparently the demon ending is an alternate to the original ending where the girl really was just a witch. It was a good change, I thought. Much better than a stereotypical all witches are evil users of black magick ending.

Lastly, am I the only person who thought the parts during the crusade should have been a separate movie unto itself with the majority of this film being the sequel?

My gf & I agreed that that this was the "best buddy cop movie pretending to be a D&D movie of all time"
And we couldn't stop laughing about how the movie was hilarious. This movie is a joke and it is a hilarious joke.
Ron Perlman just stole the show for us, and Nic Cage knew how to be the straight man to Ron's performance.
The wolves were not werewolves, they are D&D wolves with the "Fiendish Template" applied.

Completely agree with you on this one bad. This movie was silly, cheesy and stupid but I did find it to be enjoyable in a so bad its good kind of way. Surprised that you didn't mention that hilarious priest character though. Don't know why he didn't wear gloves. Would have helped during the bridge scene.

If you are talking about wolves turning into werewolves, they are called Wolfweres, according to AD&D under Lycanthropes, which inculde Werebears, Wererats, etc... Dire wolves and Wargs are just larger more ferocious wolves.
Also, I refused to watch this movie because Nic Cage is in it. Any movie with Nic Cage or Will Farrel is completely unwatchable in my opinion. Including small cameos, they completely destroy the entire movie.

Just got back from this movie and, for the most part, I agree with your thoughts. It wasn't so bad to the point I hate the fact I spent money to see it but then it's not a critically acclaimed crusades/fantasy movie.

Ron Perlman is such a kick-ass actor! He can pulled off so much with almost anything he is in. I don't remember the demon's voice being so "whiny" I guess (based on your impersonation) but they could have put more effort into the voice acting. Not like Regan from The Exorcist but at least sound evil and demonic.

    1) CG graphics for 90% of the beginning... It annoyed me. Started to loose interest.

    2) The priest neck snap... I started laughing.

    3) Nick Cage dieing staring at a naked woman with a smile on his face... How... appropriate. (Dosen't top the live burning in Kickass).

I see why you would call that a 80's buddy cop movie.

I decided after watching this review that I would give the movie a chance since I am a big Nic Cage fan and well it defiantly isn't a good movie but I did enjoy watching it. I liked the beginning with the witches being hanged and it looked promising but than it kinda just went downhill after that part. The demon just looked and sounded so funny which was fun to watch. Nic did seem like he was having fun with this role and Ron Perlman as Felson was really fun and he made me laugh. There were some boring parts and some of the things the witch did seemed very ridiculous. So yeah the movie wasn't good but it's worth a watch because of how enjoyable it is at times.
