Brad Tries Moxie
Due to popular demand, I try out a bottle of Moxie.
I also try out a few different drinks such as Dry Juniper Berry, Dandelion & Burdock, Malta Hatuey, Dry Lavender, Sanbitter, and Dr. Brown's Celery Soda.

I always thought Moxie tasted like homemade root beer.
Green beans as Anal Beads? That images isn't ever leaving me *shudder*
Now I have a craving for Moxie.
Nice video.

This is the first "Brad Tries" that I can relate to because I've tried this stuff. I actually had a bet with my boss at work.. he told me I'd get a $100 bonus on my check if I could finish the whole bottle and I tried... MAN I tried... but I lost in the end.
Reply to this
I got caught out by Malta Hatuey too.
We had to put it down the drain because no one would touch the stuff.
We now have heavy plumbing damage.
When I saw the bottle on screen the bottom fell out of my stomach because I knew exactly what was coming, the taste of carbonated, cold horlicks malt drink.
That said I love Dandelion and Burdock, which is made from the roots of both and was discovered by a priest who walked out into his garden after asking God to guide him to a remedy, apparently.

Great episode of Brad Tries. I really feel bad for you on the two worst drinks you had. Where can Dr. Brown's Celery Soda be found? I live in West Texas and I have never seen anything by Dr. Brown. Thanks for sharing, I look forward to your next post.

You'll find Doc. Brown's Cel-Ray in New York and South Florida. It's a good deal harder to find outside of these areas, but doable. You'll find them mostly in Jewish Deli's and other places that sell kosher.
Reply to this
Thanks, I'll look around then. Maybe they should do a peanut butter celery flavored soda and see how that works. lol!
Reply to this
I know they do cream sodas and a few other ones. Interestingly enough, they tried to make a diet Cel-Ray, but it was discontinued.
Reply to this
Diet cel-ray? That's kinda odd, don't ya think?
Reply to this
You can also find it online at Galco's Soda Pop Stop. Really good site if you're interested in buying hard to find sodas. It's where I bought all the sodas I sent to Brad!

Do you have any Jason's Delis out there? The ones in Houston sell Doc Browns. Cel-Ray is easily the worst thing they make, although the trend of goyim liking Jewish food that Jews don't like continues.
I recommend their black cherry cream soda. It's even better than Stewart's black cherry.

Yeah, there is one in Odessa, where I originally came from before I moved. Now here is one that brad needs to try. It's called Fukola Cola, and no I am not making this up!

Fukola Cola! Another one that received a scathing review over at the Exotic Soda website. I had no idea they still made it! Well, of COURSE Brad has to try it now!

I was looking at that dandelion cola in a store in Dublin the other day. Gonna check that shit out!

For a split second, I though the title of this was "Brad Tries: The Movie"

I would so watch that in cinemas.

My girlfriend made me try some celery soda, except it was in a can, so I had the added pleasure of aluminum with my cel-ray. *shudders*

The thing about moxie cola, is the more you drink the worse it gets. To be honest, the first sip is always good. The second, not so much.. and by the time you're halfway through the bottle it tastes terrible metallic... like you just put a fist full of old pennies in your mouth and sucked on them..
Reply to this
how do people send stuff for your show man?
Reply to this
I loved how Brad actually really got into the celery drink.

when I was a kid, my best friend LOVED Moxie so they always had it at their house. I'm personally not a huge fan of it, but I agree, the flavor is VERY unique. I'll have to try it again when I head back east next, see if my taste for it has changed in the past twenty years.

haha sweet title card, did you make it?

I'm glad to see you've gotten around to tasting the sodas I sent you!
And yeah I actually was considering getting you the lemongrass dry soda when I put this package together but it sounded pretty tame to me compared to juniper berry and lavender.
I've also had Malta Hatuey before at a Cuban restaurant and I have to say your description of the drink is pretty apt. Just to let you know, malta is basically unfermented beer so if you ever wanted to know what beer would taste like if it wasn't alcoholic now you know, LOL.
Also, Sanbitter is a drink designed to be a non-alcoholic alternative to the traditional Italian apertif Campari, which is a popular digestive. The only one that's stronger is Beverly AFAIK.

"It tastes like V8 if someone fucked all the vegetables first."
LMAO....that bad, huh?
Reply to this
i love dandilion and burdock

The deal with Malta Hatuey is that it's an unfermented beer. The malta drinks are a German invention from their early brewing days (15th or 16th century), though most of the drinks are now made in the Caribbean. Malta Hatuey is a Cuban-American drink named after a Taino Indian chief (he tried to drive the conquistadores out of Cuba.) So yes, you were drinking a malted beverage without the fun put in.
Cool fact about Moxie: the company was not doing well in the 1950s when William Gaines, publisher of Mad Magazine, approached them with a weird advertising deal. Mad Magazine did not have Moxie ads, but they did put the logo in the background of their satires and sales shot thorough the roof.

Well, there's quite a lot of malted drinks on the market, but I've never heard of one that bad. Most are pretty good, some are disgustingly sweet,...but this one really gotta be an abomination.
PS: Your videos need more cat cameos!

I was really impressed with your impressions of Doc Brown and Marty.

Dr. Pepper does NOT taste like medicine.

I've had the Dr. Brown's before, it was tastier than I expected. Moxie's bitterness is from a jellyfish extract.
Loved the title card and love the new title sequence.
On top of all that, a Lloyd cameo!
I have nothing to dislike about this video.

Nice vid Brad at the resturant I work has Doc Brown Root beer as one of our drinks

Mmm... Fentimans... Try their fermented Cola. AMAZING stuff. Easily blows Coke, Pepsi, and every other cola on the market out of the water...
Reply to this
Say CS, don't you ever worry someone might something poisoned or whatever? I mean do you check this stuff at all?
I just think it's kind of risky accepting random drinks from people on the internet. I mean I'm sure the people sending you this stuff are swell folks, but you never know when that psychotic guy who hates your videos decides to do something weird to you.

dude, the sanbitter it's an all italian drink and we greaseballs call it "gingerino", you must drink it with some kind of whiskey.
ciao from the italia

Brad, you really should try "surströmming". It's a swedish delecassy, and very much an aquired taste.

Good god I hate dandelion and burdock, its a pretty traditional drink over here in britain and I find it vile. BTW if anyone sends you a sarsaparilla drink its pretty much dandelion and burdock.

Yea, the Dr. Browns is a Kosher staple. But the best of them is the Black Cherry. During Passover, I live on the stuff. You find it a lot in the tristate area and at kosher delis/markets. Highly recommended!

Urgh... Sanbitter. Had it couple of years back, had a quater of that tiny ass bottle and then i poured the shit out in the yard.
Well now Karma has atleast punished you for speaking bad about Jul must!

I like your title card.
I tried something in a Japanese restaurant called "marbled cola." Very odd.. you slam the cap into the bottle and it drops a marble into a little space between the top and middle, so that when you drink the marble makes continuous clinking noises. They taste OK, I guess.
Reply to this
It's properly known as Ramune. Here in the States, you have a pretty good chance of finding it at Asian markets and they're all over the place in Japan. The mostly come in a variety of fruit flavors. Trying to figure out how to pop the marble for the first time can be quite the experience. As for the taste, it's nothing special but it's by no means bad. The novelty value of the bottle is the main draw for us gaijin.
Reply to this
It is obvious at this point that Brad trying to figure out how to operate one of these Ramune bottles is something we need to see.

I laughed so hard it hurt during your impression of Doc Brown and Marty. I could actually picture them having that conversation.
Excellent stuff.

Funny thing, Brad, really doesn't like Cuban drinks, the Materva (thought to be fair, I think he had the Diet Materva, that means he needs to do it again!) the Tropicola (I think), and now Malta Hatuey, I remember trying Malta Hatuey as a kid, I didn't like it, but my mom says that the new Malta Polar (google for youtube videos, and the commercials, that way, you'll at least be able to pronounce it.) Do a cuban episode with your friends where you try Materva, Diet Materva, a bunch of different Malta drinks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malta_%28soft_drink%29), and a soda from down here in south Florida called CAWY. Now I do wanna try Moxie and the Dr. Brown Celery Soda myself.

I love the new title card. XD it cracked me up.

I didn't see Brian Puschell's comment before I fired off....Brad if you want to drink Sanbitter properly, you have to use it as a palate cleanser between courses of a meal, that or drink it with whisky like Nico said.
Reply to this
I come from Europe and Sanbitter is pretty popular with my italian relatives as an aperitif. I personally think it's too bitter as well, but Brad overreacted a little and doesn't take it's purpose into account. You can't drink it like a crystal pepsi.
Also I am just amazed at the Doc Brown and Marty impression by Brad. He should do that more often.
Reply to this
I'm not sure that saying Moxie is popular in new England is entirely correct, it's more infamous than anything else. The only person I know who actually likes it is my friends dad. I always felt it had a weird orangish flavor two it, like you put some orange juice into rootbear and it somehow canceled out the acidic part.
And I don't think I have made the connection between Dr. Brown soda and Doc Brow from Back to the Future until now. But as other people said, their black cheery and cream soda are the best and if you get a chance I recommend you try them. They are obviously not weird enough for the show (and too good to be funny) but it is some of the best soda I have had.

Moxie: a Massachusetts classic! Sorry about the aftertaste.

I also loved Brad's Doc Brown and Marty impressions. If he could figure out a way to interject them into a review sometime, that would be hilarious!

You need to try Coco Rico.

I as a native of Massachusetts i have seen this in every store "down here" but everyone i know said it has a medicinal aftertaste. Which is perhaps why i never had it.

Given the choice I would totally try Moxie. I like medicinal tasting stuff (cough syrup yum!). And yes I am well aware of how weird that is.
Lloyd sounds amazingly like my Siamese girl. I love when he shows up in these; after all, he's the cat, he must be involved!

Hmm...at my house we all drink Malta like, everyday. My mom buys that sweetness every week, and with condensed milk, it's sooooo good. You seem to have a problem with cuban and latino drinks Brad, Inka cola, Materva, all are praised here in Florida. Like said above, you should do a Cuban/Florida drink tribute some time.
Funny, I was planning on sending San Bitter after I curiously bought it in some Argentinian store a while back. Beat me to the punch >:U

Sanbitter is marketed as a non-alcoholic apertif, essentially a substitute for Campari, usually served over ice and possibly extra soda, maybe a lime or lemon (twist or slice or wedge), or with orange juice (although I don't much care for that combo). Also found a recipe reference to a "Vento fizz" with Sanbitter, orange juice, diced canned peaches (!), and soda.
At the website (sanbitter.it) Sanbitter appears to come in other flavors (clear and gold colors), but I am not sure what they are.

You're supposed to drink the moxie with milk. My family always keeps a bottle of moxie lying around, my dad and gramps fill half a glass with milk and the other with moxie. I don't care for the taste, but it's pretty good.

Don't let your Cel-Ray get struck by lightning.

We still sell Moxie up here in Maine as of course, it was invented in Maine. Hell, there's even a town that worships the damn drink. No joke! The stuff is crap and the only people who drink it are either townies or old folk. Yeah, as a pure-blood "Maine-ah," I'm not afraid to admit that the stuff tastes like crap (especially the aftertaste). But Brad, you're entitled to your opinion and I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Im from Maine too... and I can't stand Moxie! I think I went to the Moxie Festival once when I was a kid because I live so close, but I dont see what the big fuss is XD

Hey Brad I'd be willing to send you a bottle of Starbuck's Mazagran from 1995. Please get back to me.

I just got a couple cans of this. There's a company that still makes this stuff so you should try out a fresh can. You can buy them on eBay for not too much. You said the bottle was sitting around in your basement so I don't know if it was flat or not. But go on eBay and buy a fresh can.
