Wow, just wow. This review shocked me. I usually find myself agreeing with most of your reviews however definitely not this one. I know this is just your opinion but I would have to disagree with your overall statement. The Mechanic was an excellent movie, coming from one of the biggest Statham fans of all time. (I managed to secure tickets to a pre-screening of this film before it hit theaters) No, it's not a mind boggling movie, nor does it have an original plot, and yes it had it's cheesy one liners. The movie did what it entailed to do, make a Jason Statham action movie. If you like Jason Statham like I do, or if you just like awesome action scenes with blood, gore, guns, and Jason Statham kicking ass. Your argument about the scene at the bus station is almost invalid. The movie obviously does not have a strong plot, and it knows that, they needed to get the movie going. The plot may be bad, and other than that all you really criticized was 2 scenes in the movie. With regards to Ben Foster, the audience was supposed to dislike the character he portrayed. There were almost no redeeming qualities of his character. In conclusion, if you like Jason Statham, if you like movies like the transporter etc, you will love this movie. I highly recommend finding the ten dollars for the theater ticket and watching this movie.

    Great Review,
I probably enjoyed the movie a bit more than you, but I do have to agree the villain needed way more coverage.
And the whole experience seemed pretty bland, but I enjoyed the 'whacky' kills and overall felt like I was watching Law Abiding Citizen in a way. My friends and I were even quoting Law Abiding Citizen during The Mechanic.

But enjoyed the review even if I thought you were a little more upset by amazing coincidences than me, but I tend to let those things slide, for the sake of the writer who end up in corners too often.

Funny the two films I watched today was the Matrix, and I saw 127 Hours in theatres. I think I picked the better choice.

My movie critic wasn't so thrilled about the Rite though and I really want to know your opinion so I can have a second opinion

I was wondering if this was a Brosnan remake. Thanks for clearing it up.
Statham really needs to be in something like predators 2.
I love Ghosts of Mars. But the One is not great.

I honestly agree with the Snob on this one. It was pretty bland. It is what it is, a remake to a good movie. Statham is Statham in it but it doesn't actually feel like a Statham action movie. It feels like a generic action movie that could have had anyone in the leads and been exactly the same. Hell, you could have placed Ben Savage in the Foster role and Matthew Fox in the Statham role and it wouldn't really have made a difference.

What about Lock, Stock and Two Smocking Barrels? Was pretty much his first movie and was a good one too. Or hell, even The Bank Job I found was really entertaining. He was also in (a supporting role) the Italian Job.

I totally agree with you on this one, it was just the ultimate "Meh" movie. The ending really pissed me off as well, it was such an anti-climax.

I have to disagree with you on Ben Foster there (more in general, as I haven't seen this movie). That guy was so great in 3:10 to Yuma.

I was really amazed at how Brad pronounce "Statham". I'm from Sweden and I'm no expert in english language but I thought it was pronounced with an "a" like in "bag" or "staff" not like "state" or "made". It sounds more as if Brad is saying "state ham"

I'll probably rent this one unless I DO remember it. I'll see The Rite instead because at least Anthony Hopkins make any movie worthwhile!

I wouldn't say it's a horrible movie. Worth a rental, but not worth seeing in theatres. It's worth watching if you like Statham. And I like both Statham and Sutherland. Better than The Rite. Anthony Hopkins is another actor I like, but The Rite is just a movie I can't recommend at all. Alot of bullshit. Only real moral to the story is, don't have any sort of mental instability while in Rome.

Hello, Brad. Sorry you didn't like the movie. I try to respect other people's opinions, but I do have to ask what was so good about War? The way you describe The Mechanic is almost how I feel about War.

Others might think War is an average action film, but I just thought it was stupid and full of badly edited and filmed action scenes. There were tons of great martial artists in the movie, and they didn't even get to be utilized.

I especially didn't like how the movie can be summed up as "I'm avenging the death of my best friend! Oh wait, I'm responsible!"

I would like to think The Mechanic has better action scenes and is less idiotic than War. Thanks for your review though.

I actually agree with Brad's review. It wasn't horrible, it just wasn't good. The plot was weak too. I have to agree about the Bus scene, but I don't get why he trained him to be an assassin... really it seems like having him there only made his job harder. I mean he doesn't do the first job right, and almost gets Bishop killed in the second one. There was no question at the end what would happen.. but I don't get why the ending went that way..the ending was really anti-climatic... there wasn't much flow. And I liked Ghosts of Mars.. at least the ending made sense.. you can't kill ghosts.. so they keep coming back.

Well as a fellow Statham fan, I wanted to see this today but after your review....I think I'll wait. Brad, I am surprised you havent cover Statham's other film "13" that was only released overseas. It is available online here's the trailer

I have seen it, but unfortunately I was dissapointed. The premise is awesome, but the ending really let me down. But there is hope Statham has another film coming out in March..."Blitz".....Heres that trailer...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMhy6uxaCgY

But seriously Brad, please explain to me why "Revolver" was not a piece of absolute shit???

Revolver? Revolver is my favorite Jason Statham movie of all time. It's extremely well written, and takes the viewer on a mind fuck of a journey where at every turn you have no idea what is going on and you really have to pay attention. The movie is not something that just throws all the information at the viewer in just one scene, *cough cough* The Prestige *cough* It`s a psychological thriller that requires the ability to think for yourself rather than have everything explained to you. It`s a rarity found in the movie genera these days.

Statham's Dungeon Siege was cheesy as fuck, but had a good amount of well choreographed fight scenes. That's all I cared about. Kind of like Beast Stalker or Red Sonja with Hong Kong action.

Hey Brad, as a general Statham fan I think I can see where you'e going with this review...

Although the movie has its Statham action moments - the beginning, bus, the building climax...Statham is basically playing trainer to Foster's trainee....Only he's being floored because his killing has more to do with emotions than Statham's does.

Plus of course Foster is the one doing most the badass killing, really.

Statham is laid back and generally muted in this film.

But I have to disagree, I dont care much for Foster (the fight scene with the huge pedophile reminds me of the scene with the Russian in The Punisher, only Foster gets to ham it up like his hero Jane this time - he must've learned from the master in that film), but the movie was pretty good....

Maybe you didn't like the Lousiana setting?

But I think afer Crank and Crank 2 we expect Statham to be a supercharged monster killer...which he definitely is not here.

I have't seen the new version as yet but I thought I'd give you a Consumer Advisory about a reissue DVD of the original "Mechanic" that has a "sneak peek" of the new film ( just the Trailer) and two other lesser Charles Bronson films, "Assassination" and "Messenger of Death" all on one disc. The version of the "Mechanic" has about 10 to 15 minutes hacked of the center, including the dirt bike chase, the film cuts right to the end of the last mission. The other two film I really don't know if they have been edited, but at least "Assassination" has the LAWS Rocket fight intact. Just thought you should know.

I just thought the movie was mediocre. The irritating thing with Jason Statham is that while he has the talent as the 80's action stars(maybe even more!), his movies just seem small scale in comparison.

They are look and feel alike, and almost 100% rely on Statham's charm. He needs to do something crazy and over-the-top, like "Cobra" or "Commando".
