Radiodrome: "RoboCop"

I know many of you are waiting patiently for "Hooker Part 5." It's in post production right now, it's taken longer to piece together, mainly because the episode, being the finale, is about twice as long as previous episodes.

Until then, enjoy this episode of Radiodrome where we talk about the RoboCop franchise!

Love the show; only thing that would make it better is an option for streaming.

I agree because downloading it has become a problem with this file! It doesn't download all of the episode. Tried it twice, but it didn't happen!

Try it again with something other then the IE download system (that always seem to cut shit off).

I just tried the link with DAP and it downloaded the entire file with no issues.

If you don't want the downloads, you can listen "live" on Thursday nights from the jackaloperadio webpage (that is a live stream).

The end song is "Chicken Farm" from The Dead Kennedys (one of my favorite bands). After each show, I plan to put some cool songs, so make sure you listen in each one for the oddball song I include (episode 4 has one I will be VERY happy if someone besides me knows).

Another great episode. I still haven't seen all of Robocop 3, but someday I'll have to sit it out. This Prime Directives Series sounds interesting, but the Canadian TV factor isn't a selling point. And I'm Canadian. Page Fletcher is terrible!

Robocop was one of the best sci-fi action films of the 80s-90s, I'd say right along with The Terminator and T2. It is a shame that we haven't seen a big-screen adaptation of Robocop since Robocop 3 (which was at first a direct to video movie that was later released in theaters).

Darren Aronofsky was announced as the director for the Robocop relaunch but that sadly appears to be on hold and may never see the light of day.

Anyway, thanks for providing us with entertainment Brad. Would you or any readers know the song that plays in the intro? Sounds like something you'd hear in an 80s flick.

    About Hobbs...

I was born in 1983 and I saw all these violent 80s and early 90s movies on VHS. I saw Robocop 2 for the first time when I was like 7. And the kids of that era were really into violent movies. I mean I don't have to tell you this, but yeah, we were. We understood that violence is real, but that the violence in movies was not. So it was fun.
Now THIS is where Robocop 2 becomes the ultimate satire and the perfect kids movie...
Hobbs was like that kid watching violent movies, but he took it one step further, right? He was the violent badass that most of the kids watching these movies wanted to be. But he was still a kid. It's like that Pinocchio/Teenege Mutant Ninja Turtles thing where the kids want to be all badass and they leave home and smoke cigarettes, but they're still kids and in the end the reality sets in that it's not as much fun anymore. That's the same thing with Hobbs - in the end it was just like a game that went too far. And it's perfectly build up, too. Like with the scene where they are cutting that cop open and Hobbs wants to look away, but Kane makes him watch. Like "yeah, you want to be a bad ass? You want to be Mr. Violence? Then don't be a pussy and watch this". Didn't anyone have that mom who cought you smoking at a very young age and then forced you to like smoke a whole pack to prove a point? Also that little league team robbing that store or when Robocop becomes a pussy and the kids mock him... the movie is full of these little touches that make this movie a perfect violent movie for kids. 'Cos they were making these films for kids as well. I mean parents could take like a 12 year old to the theater and the kids that were too young made their parent rent the fim. They should have just advertized Robocop 2 with "hey kids, do you like violence? Then you'll LOVE Robocop 2!". And in the end it's like "aww, that wasn't so much fun, now was it? Bullets hurt and kids get killed. Haa-haa!".

    I love it!

Yeah that scene with the prototype Robocops still cracks me up. I'm surprised there was no mention of Robocop's gun having a cameo in Sin City and City Hunter. Especially since you guys were also talking about a show which is centered around the idea of a the same gun in the hand sof different people in every episode!

If you want to see something close to what the original intent of ROBOCOP 2 and even 3 was, pick up FRANK MILLER'S ROBOCOP Trade paperback. It takes Miller's original script adapts it into the comic medium, and it is surprising how different it was.

As for Fred Dekker, while his film career is over, the man has worked extensivly in television, including being a producer and writer on STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE.

The original RC is one of my favourite films of all time, I heard good things about prime directives and eagerly sat down to watch it...

I can barely find the words to describe how much I hated it.

The guy playing Robocop can barely act and his presence is appalling, with no idea how to even move. His acting is so stilted yet hammy and over the top it's almost a send up of the original. Not to mention the classic mechanical sounds for RC's movement are gone, even the footsteps.

Yes it's ultraviolent, but that becomes moot in the face of cast-wide bad acting, tacky costume and character design and the moronic stories.

No heart, no drama and ham-fisted, unfunny social commentary. Even the TV series with it's eye-rolling, kid-friendly action was better than this.... still, it's not as bad as Robocop 3.

Cliffhangers! Oh man, I thought I was the only one who remembered that show. To this day I still haven't seen the final episode...

... so Josh, any chance you could make two DVD copies of that show?
