80's Dan: "Automan"
In this brand new sitcom style series on thecinemasnob.com, Brad stars as 80's Dan, a figure magically transported into the present. Along with his sidekick Rob the Robot, Dan becomes roommates with the lovely Dolly (Jillian Zurawski) and attempts to expose 80's greatness to not only her, but his neighbors The Crabtrees. In this episode, Dan spotlights the pilot episode of the 1983 short lived series "Automan."

Are you referencing Back to the Future in the opening? Because how Dolly meets Dan really reminded me of that.
Reply to this
ok nice try but for me it totally didn't work. The sidekick robot is unstandable unfunny (Yeah, I got the reference but it just didn't work out for me) Besides Pat The NES Punk has the same sidekick so its getting kinda old. I really like Automan but this is just an unfunny line up of lame jokes. No I didn't miss the point. But I appreciate the work you put in this series( and hope it will be canceled after the first episode)
Reply to this
I am almost certain the unfunny line of lame jokes compliments the robots are a nod to 80's sitcoms. They even use the same laugh track that many of those shows used.
Reply to this
yeah, its not trying to be funny like that, its a sarcastic parody of what sitcoms used to be on the 80s, and the robot is the representation of the typical character that keeps on making lame jokes and commentary between the other characters lines
Reply to this
Yeah, so shut up if you don't even get what the series is supposed to be... retarded jackass.

Awesome, I loved it! Where's the theme song from? I king of recognize it, but not where it's from.
Reply to this
It is from the Big Box episodes. That is why Jillian said the line about VHS and Rob said the line about tits.
Reply to this
I know where Automan's theme is from, and technically, Big Box got it's theme from Automan. I meant the theme song for this show.

I am pretty sure it is from Brad's "Universal Soldier" review.

80's Dan is awesome. Though, his personality is very similar to Zack from the Save by the Bell cast.

I thought it was great! I love the concept of the show, since I'm a child of the 80's.

I love this. I really enjoyed the meta jokes you had in here and the cheesiness. The laugh track got a little annoying because it felt like the timing was off to me but overall I think you did a good job.

Brad Jones: playing a psychotic killer in one video, then a cheesy 80s sitcom character in the next. I like it =)

Ha! I remember when Automan premiered and I thought it looked like the coolest thing ever. It just shows how very, very wrong first impressions can be. Still, better than Manimal, which was just plain stupid.

FINALLY an 80's Dan episode,it was well worth the wait
Reply to this
Really enjoyed this video, and can't wait to see more. The only problem I had was that the laugh track cut into the back and forths jokes too much, try saving it for the end of a series of jokes otherwise it just feels overused.
Reply to this
I liked it. It's a good first episode. I do have to agree that the laugh track does get annoying after a while. Also the pacing is a bit slow, maybe as the episode goes on, tighten up the editing a bit, and use shorter laugh track samples. It's just once the review gets going the long pauses really slow it down.
But I totally look forward to more.

I think one of the jokes was the badly used laugh track. In the 80's everything (well, almost everything) had a laugh track and it never made any sense when it kicked in.
I think this is a good start, and it's nice to see a show with more developed side characters, or at least a show with side characters and synced voices. And there are so many bad shows from the 80's.
Brad, what sort of criteria are you going to use to pick targets?

WOW! I have to admit, this looks like it could be a pretty decent show. I like the fact that its a jab at most 80's tv shows, while reviewing 80's tv shows, lol. But where's the keyboard tie, Dan? I have serious doubts that your from the 80's if you don't have the keyboard tie.

The 80's Dan Show is a sitcom...
of course it is...
I don't know how I did not see that one coming. -This was pure brilliance! The fast-paced sitcom-style "jokes", the characters- the entire thing had me wishing there were more episodes on Hulu someplace.
For serious, this is my most favorite thing you've done since The Snob. PLEASE tell me you'll do these, at least, on a Brad Tries type schedule. Pretty much anything 80's Dan says cracks me up with that delivery you're doing for the character.
And "Rape. Rape is what happens..." I spit my soda on that one.
Good job everyone!!!
I really can't stress enough how much I enjoyed watching this one.
I'm starting to sound a little gay with it, so I will go now...

As for the show itself, it is not a bad start and shows the silliness that sitcoms in that era brought. Hope to see more episodes and have your characters develop. Maybe get a cameo from Jerrid.
Oh and I noticed a Pumpkinhead copy in your movie collection, would be interesting to see if that ends up being an episode.

Holy Sweet 80's! That was awesome. I totally like 80's Dan now. I heard of Automan, but it wasn't my cup of tea at all. The only short lived 80's TV show that I liked was Street Hawk. I wonder if 80's Dan would Street Hawk. That would be sweet. Also, a sitcom? Pure awesome. Keep up the good work, dude!

I know that 80s Dan was supposed to be funny, but I didn't find it funny at all. The way Brad constantly kept starring into the cam to deliver his lines was just really bad, the gratuitous cleavage shot was just really odd and not in good taste to the entire show. I give in a 2 out of 5. Nice try, but could have been a heck of a lot better.

Totally tubular and most awesome, dude! Love the new show idea, bring us more!
Not that you need ideas I'm sure, but there is a show (if you can find it) needed a '80s Dan treatment, The Highwayman.
It started Sam "Flash Gordon" Jones and co-stared Jane "Diana from V" Badler and Tim "Tuvok from ST: Voyager" and was essentially "The Road Warrior" meets "Knight Rider." Truly cheese-tastic!

That was hysterical.
What though, no mention of Doug McClure or the AMC Eagle product placement?
Wonder if the producers of Automan were inspired by the far superior "Holmes and Yoyo"?

I got to say brad this one had really no laughs for me. It was kinda boring and the sound machine was annoying and painful. I don't think you need to make a framing device for your reviews, just be 80s dan and maybe have some of the other people be there to make jokes and generally riff on the show. All except robby please for the love of god drop the robot everyone has a robot now and he was really really pointless. Also why did robby say "gyro" the way you say the food?
Reply to this
The greatest. idea. ever.
I salute you, sir

Nice.
I was pleasantly surprised how well the sitcom framing meshes with the showcased material. Actually feared it might fall victim to "Well, let's just pad this thing with random skits!"-syndrome (or W.L.P.T.T.W.R.S.! for short). Glad it worked out and looking forward to the next episode.
Favorite parts probably were the camera panning and the swelling music when Mrs. Crabtree enters and every single instance when Dan flashes his Cheeshire Cat grin at the camera.
Of course, this being the internet, I have some minor nitpicks as well.
1. The laugh track seems a bit odd, or rather over top, and gets annoying at times.
2. At the beginning, when Dolly comes home and talks to Dan she is looking down as if Dan was either much smaller or was on a lower elevation (even after he stood up), which feels odd to me, because Dan is looking straight ahead, so it does not feel like they are actually looking at each other when talking.

Awesome! If I may steel a line from robocop..."I LIKE IT!!" Hopefully we will see more of 80's
Dan, and the rest of the gang in future episodes
Reply to this
Hate to say this, but I didn't enjoy this that much. The show has some good potential, but the laugh track is awful in quality, the music doesn't fit the theme at all and a lot of the jokes are just unfunny. Besides, I didn't like the robot buddy. Too many have done that already and truthfully, I expected Brad to be above that.
But as I said, the show has potential. I just love the idea of this, but Brad really do need to work on it a bit more.

I kinda felt like 80's Dan would be like a cross between one of those old celebrities on TV's selling those decade music collections and Lenard Malton.
The 80's Dan show has potential but needs some work. I recommend highly to cut down on the canned laughter, or at least get some sound clips of the quieter laughing and use the loud samples sparingly. I know most sitcom's spammed it, but I could never stand it. I'm surprised you didn't think of & use the terrible pun "Automan Empire" somewhere.
anyhow, can't wait to see more 80's Dan after a few small tweaks.

Man that was something preposterous. I could see how someone would dislike it, but I really dug it. The cheese factor was maxed out, and for the most part everyone was pretty likable.
Guess my only complaint would be the laugh tracks. I get their purpose though, and it didn't ruin the experience; just kind of slowed everything down [like in an 80s, 90s sitcom].
Either way, looking forward to more if you decide to do so.

I get that it's a send up of 80s and 90s tv sitcom shows, but you may have inadvertently made it annoying and too poorly pace; even if that was the joke, it doesn't make it fun to watch.
I like the concept though, and the actual show being reviewed was pretty funny, though the sitcom style of your presentation might need a little reworking.
Either way you're among the best reviewers on the Internet, love your stuff!

Gezee Patrick Macnee, from John Steed to that character, poor guy the 1980's were certainly not kind to him
Overal the show was decient, it just feels like you need to mix it abit more of the snobs video style into it and cut back a little on the sitcom part
plus I kinda miss 80's dan's original music, hell I think the music of dressed to fire would have suited it better

How dare there be an intrusive laugh track in a send up of 80s sitcoms!! I prefer my sitcom spoofs to have no laugh tracks OR cheesy jokes. Boo on this.

I don't know why people are bitching about Rob, I thought he was lovable. He was probably my favorite part of the episode. And the fact that he was voiced by Steve from "Game Boys" was incredibly appropriate.

the new show is great. love the OTT performance. my one complaint is that the laugh-track is too disjointed from the main audio, to the point that it becomes a bit jarring after a while, it also breaks the flow of dialogue and the rhythm of the gags. there's my two cents. I look forward to seeing episode 2!

I'm glad people seem to like this show! 80's Dan is meant to be be like the Anti-Cinema Snob. He's the happiest character on the site. As for the laugh track, it's supposed to be rather intrusive, in that the show is a send up of sitcoms. Obviously I can work on the laugh track in future episodes, but personally, I kinda dug it. It's a pilot, and basically with a pilot, you throw a lot of stuff at the wall to see what sticks. This one has honestly gone over better than any of the other pilots I've done, which makes me happy =)

If you're doing a laugh track (which is awesome) then you might think about starting each episode with the voice over " '80s Dan is not filmed in front of a live studio audience." That might be a '70s sitcom thing, but still somehow appropriate.

This was not good but only because of the laugh track (I'm strongly against laugh tracks/live stuido audiences in sitcoms/sketch shows in general anyway). Without that this would have been watchable for me. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against 80s Dan and reviewing old 1980s TV shows but the laugh track kills the show for me
Reply to this
Then this show is obviously not made for you.

Brad, use a computery voice for robot instead of a person then it's funny as shit.

I really like Dan, and I really like the idea that everyone hates him and must be completely sick of hearing him talk about the 80s. But for some reason, something felt off.
Reply to this
My suggestion for the new show, use less of the clap track/stilted delivery. 80's Dan and ROB should really be the only ones who get it, also, more focus on them, less of this 'all-over-the-place-ness' with the other characters, they should be means to an end, not leads. I know, it's making fun of 80's sitcoms with all that, but you can do that /and/ make something professional at the same time. Highly promising, but needs a little tweaking.
Reply to this
I really liked it. Jillian is so hilarious, but the robot is really distracting plus the audience sound gag is overused a little, it wouldn't bother me so much if it wasn't for the sound after the laughs. I don't know if it was intentional but it really annoyed me. You should do more episodes!

I liked it. Interesting idea to mix up character reviewing with some kind of show format. The bad jokes were funny but I don´t know if this can be kept up for more shows. Also, while the dialogues really had that cheesy sitcom vibe going on, the camerawork felt out of place for a sitcom, but it is probably very hard to get that "fourth wall studio set feeling" in a regular home. Anyways, I think it´s good that you´re experimenting with new formats. I really loved the opening and the "everyone laughing" still at the end. It strikes me as both as satire and also a loving homage to the sitcoms we grew up with. Thumbs up

I think you need more obnoxious pans to the camera with douchey smiles during the laugh tracks. 80's needed those every single day.

That blacklight joke was genius. When she asked if he had sex with the streetlight was hilarious too. If this can keep up this comedic rhythm it'll be completely awesome. The absurdity of the show helped as well.
Reply to this
All in all, an enjoyable pilot. I do feel that the laugh track kind of kills the legitimately funny parts, though. Maybe you could reduce it to only reacting to Dan and the robot, seeing as they are the only people from the 80s.
Speaking of robots - Holy crap, was that Transformers:Animated Wreck-Gar hanging from that shelf in the background?! Whose is that?

Rough start, but you got one big LOL out of me when Jillian said something like "I know those are video games Dan!". My only concern is I'm not sure 80s Dan can carry an entire 20 minutes show.

My friend gave me a copy of double team. My favorite part is entirely subtle product placement at the end, as well as Dennis Rodman's homies in that bizarre monastic order. At least Mickey Rourke was in it, even though the set up for the conflict with him was totally nonsensical. "Oh, hi son. Look out while I cap these bitches."

Dan was more fun in his cameos I'm not saying he can't carry his own series just that he was better written in previous appearances it seems like this series has more to do with bending to pressure from fans and less to do with a genuine want to create a series for him

Ps. on an unrelated note, Jillian's manga collection is awesome. I spotted Trigun, Tsubasa, and the big book collections of Rurouni Kenshin...very nice

It has potential, but the laugh track kind of got on my nerves. I think it should be reserved only for ROB and 80s Dan... whereas for the others, maybe you could say the laugh track isn't picking up on the snark. Nonetheless, I do think this has potential and I encourage you to make more!
Reply to this
The only advice I could give is pull back on the laugh track a bit, because while I understand it was supposed to be, it was still excessive to a fault. Some jokes only need cheesy mugging to the camera and they work fine as well. Oh and maybe digitize Rob's voice or something.
It needs some polish, but it's on its way.

With regards to the laugh track, I tend to agree that in the long run cutting its use down is a good idea for future episodes. However, your cast of characters is excellent, and the performances from the rest of the cast are excellent, with Jillian in particular finding the exact right tone to play off of Dan.
Look forward to more episodes!

I loved this video. The only thing I DIDN'T like was the laugh track, and only because it seemed to be off. The concept is solid, and it's cool to see you doing reviews with this kind of concept. I wouldn't say it's for EVERYONE, but I liked it.

OK, first, I loved the show. But like many here, something was just off about it. After giving it some thought, it hit me-the dirty jokes really don't work in this setting. I mean I know the sleaze thing is your schtick and all, but you should be doing more double entendres like they did back in the 80's. Not flat out porn humor. It would fit better with the premise.
Also, there really wasn't an explanation of what the show Automan was. After watching this video, I still have no idea.
Please don't drop this segment. it just needs a little fine tuning is all.
Keep up the fun work.

I didn't really enjoy this one Brad, I like the idea and it is very much "you" but it just seems to move along like molasses, and the laugh track kills every joke's timing. It's just boring. Knowing your talent, though, you'll nail it down soon enough.
By the way, "Gyro" is pronounced "Yee-row" when you're talking about the Mediterranean food made of flatbread, roasted meat and sauce; it's pronounced "Jye-row" when you're talking about a self-stabilizing spinning disc, short for "Gyroscope." Isn't English fun?

I actually quite liked this, and would be happy to see more. I am incredibly tickled that what we've seen of Dan on other shows is, in fact, his official backstory: vanished when the Cinema Snob told him he wasn't real, reappeared on Brad Tries with a can of New Coke.
Travis Crabtree must wonder why so many of his neighbours look so much alike...

I thought 80s Dan was one of the best jokes in the entire Caligula review, so naturally when I saw this on the site this morning, I was pretty excited. Overall this was enjoyable, I really liked it and 80's Dan has great potential. But what spoils it for me is the canned audience and R.O.B's voice. For me every joke is ruined by the audience laughter (which I know is a joke in itself) but it really irritates me. When a joke is said I'm anticipating the laughter (which I don't like), therefore the jokes are instantly made unfunny. As for R.O.B's voice, it just doesn't suit him nor the style of delivery, to me it's a case of the voice doesn't fit the face (or casing).
Just my opinion, I did actually like the video and hope to see more of 80's Dan. Keep up the good work.

Nice pilot featuring a pilot. Is that really the kind of thing they use to show on Bravo? I think everybody did a great job, especially Jill and Sarah. I think its a cool concept, but it was a little hit and miss. I know you are trying to parody 80's tv but you really need to limit the use of the laugh track. It got annoying hearing it every ten seconds. The robot and his lines got a little stale as well. Can he turn into his voice actor magically in the next episode?
The Remington Steel line was pretty good, as well as the "produced by" freeze frame to explain who that one guy was. I think its a nice little start and can't wait to see more.

For those commenting on 80's Dan and the internet, the internet did exist in the 80's. It's just that it was mainly used by corrupt stock brokers and... well this.
Forget HTML though, back then if you got online it was through the simple purity of a DOS based BBS system! Ascii art in colors, and that menu option had flashing text! What an age we live in! How do you think people got their illicit downloads of ALF, Rescue Rangers, and Avoid the Noid? (All of these were PC games back then, as well as a number of Donkey Kong, Tetris, and Dr. Mario clones.)
80's Dan is probably just confused about all these silly graphics cluttering up his text interface.

Dude, I'm only 2 minutes into this, and it is absolutely fucking awesome! This is such an perfect satire of 1980's sitcoms. You must do more of these!

It's...Sedanimal! No, not really.

Have to agree on the laugh track. I know it's probably *meant* to be annoying and overdone but that doesn't make it any less annoying.
Except for that I really liked it, although I hope it doesn't get to be a regular feature in the current form. The meta 80s jokes will wear out pretty fast.

Love it Brad!!! That character is fantastic! Can't wait to see what other 80's nostalgia you bring.

I honestly did not enjoy this at all or find it funny. I know what you were going for and I get it but it just was not funny to me. I understand trying new things with popular characters (I enjoyed 80s Dan's appearances up until now)but I think this is a unfunny idea. I look forward to seeing more 80's Dan cameos but I think that's all he should be like Linkara's 90's Kid.

I get why people don't like this one... but I kinda dig it. has potential, too. the way I see it, is 1) if the character 80's Dan becomes more likable, and 2) if Brad gets a better Backstage Audience Voice, the show would be a lot more entertaining.

The 80s Dan theme is the theme to a short-lived show called "Hawaiian Heat," starring Robert "Warrior of the Lost World" Ginty.

Yeah, you would pick the one 80s song I've never heard before as your theme song.
Lol, & your laugh track scared my kittens. It sounds like you have an audience trapped in a giant tin can. XD

I found it painfully unfunny along the lines of 90% of the content over at tgwtg *shudders* but that is just me ill just stick to clicking on the cinema snob videos.

I absolutely LOVE this new segment, its brilliant, because its a satire of all things from the 1980's that don't seem to make a lick of sense by today's standards, and I love that its wrapped up in the form of a cheesy sitcom, complete with laugh track.

Great review!
Just for the record: Automan says "Jimmy CONNORS playing tennis" not "Jimmy Carter." lol

is it just me or does the guy who plays auto man look and sound a bit like the guy from the dragon strike vhs

Man, I don't know how I missed this. Loving this show. I don't remember Automan, but I do remember Turbo Teen, ha. Wish I had seen Automan though! Looks like great, cheesy, TRON inspired fun! Incidentally, it would be interesting to see Dan's reaction to TRON Legacy or the upcoming TRON animated series, ha.

There are a few questions on your site.
How can I contact the administration?

I Love it! XD
I hope there will be much more of 80's Dan.

Is there an episode where we see how 80's Dan meet Dolly? Or is that only shown in the opening?
Reply to this
It's only shown in the opening. Back then there were a number of shows that only showed their backstory in the opening credits. Though I will probably start doing more flashbacks on the series.

Awesome. Thanks man. I love this show so far. Flashbacks are cool too. Who knows, maybe Rob can finally get Mrs. Crabtree to get that divoce, lol.
