Didn't finish the video because the scene you described sounds, big shock, fucking awesome and I don't want the movie spoiled for me. I'm going to have to figure out how I'm gonna see this movie before it leaves theaters. I'll even try to see it in 3D if I can. It'll be nice to see the effect used properly (atmospheric 3D as you call it annoys me to no end).

I snuck a beer into this movie. It was well worth it to be able to drink and witness an opening day nic cage flick! Sad though, because only about 15 people were there. My two friends who I dragged along also were shocked and disturbed, and might never talk to me again, but hell, it was well worth it!

The funny thing I've noticed is, what the hell is up with Prison Break Actors tunrning up in major movies in the exact same role?

I mean, Wentworth Miller, the guy that got himself into prison to break his brother out in the series, turns up in Resident Evil After Life as the only guy who knows how to break out of the prison they're in.

William Fichtner on the other hand plays the badass FBI Agent who turns up in season 2, hunts the outbreakers down and finally joins their side for the last 2 seasons. And in Drive Angry he basically dows the same thing. Just straight over the top.

Drive Angry 3D was the greatest 3D Expericence I've had so far. I've even broke my oath to never see a 3D movie again, just for Nic Cage. And it was worth it!

I'm so pleased that you bigged up gimmick laden, throwing stuff at the screen, proper 3D.
Carmen in 3D? Well go see it at an opera house. It's so 3D the cast his actually standing on the stage!
Drive Angry sounds great and the poster is good too.

I can't stand gimmicky 3D. There's a reason you don't throw stuff at the screen in 2D: because it is annoying.

In 3D it only gets more annoying.

The reason atmospheric 3D is popular is because it is not perceived as gimmicky. When it actually adds something to the movie watching experience instead of being at an amusement ride.

3D is very old however it died each time period it came out because it was perceived as gimmicky.

Atmospheric 3D is as much a gimmick as proper 3D. You don't wander around marveling a the shear 3D-ness of the real world. You take it for granted.
Plus 3D films look like animated pop up books:a series of overlayed flat images. And you get a better sense of the atmosphere of films like the Last Airbender by sniffing dog poo. The only thing 3D added was another dimension for it to stink in.
When I go to the cinema to see a 3D event movie, I don't want atmosphere. I want big sound and big things popping out of the screen. Dammit I expected to be treated like a child.

Uh Satan as a jailer and hell as a prison is not an original concept in film. Several films have done it and it is actually in line with Christian theology with the demons and Satan serving god.

One film had the demons doing prayers to god in hell and a female devil came from hell to punish evil doers and kill them sending them to hell. And the female devil falls in love with a mortal and is blessed by god for doing his work on Earth. I wish I could recall the name of this movie.

Some directors get it just like you do.

Charlie Band just finished "Evil Bong 3D" and has said repeatedly that he strictly thinks of 3D as things flying at the audience.

By the way, EB3D is going to premiere in Chicago on April 9, that's right in your backyard you lucky skunk!
There hasn't been a Full Moon theatrical release in a long while.

Great review, I completely agree about 3D.
I was really surprised that there are people that take 3D as a serious movie making tool rather than a gimmick.

There's an article over at Videomaker.com about how to shoot 3D and actually says "don't expect to show things flying at the screen, it didn't work in the 50s and it doesn't work now".

    WHAT???

I sure don't want to pay all that money and induce a headache with the glasses and not get a payoff.

Oh yeah, be on the lookout for "The Great Gatsby 3D". I sure wish I was kidding about that.

I've been anticipating this movie for months and somehow managed to forget it came out this weekend, so good luck your review reminded me.

I maintain that the only problem with atmospheric 3D is that they're charging extra for it. If I'm paying extra I want to make sure I really notice the 3D, but if there were a choice between 2D and atmospheric 3D for the same price I don't know who wouldn't choose 3D. It seems like all the arguments against atmospheric 3D are really resentment over the theaters charging extra for it when it's really not worth it - except Ebert, of course, who keeps going on about how it makes everything dim and terrible, but that doesn't seem like too common a complaint.

If 3D manages to make it past being a fad and a cash grab for shitty movies, then prices will drop to normal, at which point we'll be able to see if atmospheric 3D really has any legs or is just a gimmick.

This is definitely the best 3-D film of the recent lot. Totally agree that Lussier is the king of 3-D and I loved what he did with My Bloody Valentine. Here we get lots of stuff thrown at us, but also interesting things like image overlap for the flashbacks and that weird tactile sort of ripple effect in one scene. Love the slo-mo, too.

It's not tongue-in-cheek and silly? Damn...I was really hoping it would be. Based on the commercials, it certainly looks like it. Hopefully it will come off as tongue-in-cheek to me, because otherwise, it will just seem stupid and dated. I like it more when they are self-aware, since taking that seriously nowadays is just...ludicrous...at least in my eyes.

You should make a gimmicky episode of Brad Tries/Cinema Snob/Miscellanious TV and Movie Reviews/80's Dan in 3d! Not necessarily with the glasses, but maybe the gimmick where you stick your hand out of the letterbox like they do in trailers for 3d movies.

Hey, i'm from germany and I was really looking forward to see this movie. I said to myself that this would be the first 3d movie i was gonna watch in the theater. Then i read that i would be censored in germany. For stuff like that i hate my country. These are 12 Bucks they won't get from me. I like Nic Cage and the movie looked like what i wnted to see when i bought my ticket for Death Proof, 4 years ago. Fucking shame that i have to wait for the uncut DVD...

No one in this thread has seen Shoot 'Em Up, which did the described scene first and did it with Monica Belucci (and, hence, better)?

And to be fair to the ladies, Clive Owne was just as nekkid in it. And he didn't need no wussy shades, cigar, and bottle of Jack to make him look more badass doing it.

Decent review, good film.Totally disagree with your review of A Serbian Film though. I honestly found that a lazy cheap form of reviewing, which actually consisted of personal attacks against fans of the film, in true moral grandstanding style. The fact that you like a far more morally dubious fiplm such as Cannibal Holocaust, and claim to like the New York Ripper, yet then whinge about context regarding A Serbian Film highlights your glaring double standards.
A Serbian Film was one of the best horrors of 2010, and has gotten quite a bit of positive feedback on the IMDB horror board.
Sorry if we all give you the creeps thpugh, but I can assure you, that nobody's apologizing for thinking it's a good film.
