Your review of Super sounds a lot like my opinion of Special. I liked Special but I thought the ending was such a downer, but was also confused because the movie acted like it was a happy ending. Although, Super sounds a bit more depressing. And I was totally taken aback by the movie's tone when the trailer made it seem like a "fun romp" of a movie.

But yeah, I really wanna see Super. James Gunn is almost always reliable in bringing the awesome.

Great review and the movie sounds great.

The actor you mentioned at the end is
Gregg Henry, he was also in Gunn's Slither.

The death was depressing and mood-killing because it was supposed to be. It was basically the movie's way of forcing the audience to realize that in reality, real-life superheroes (those who lack powers, of course), would not have happy endings. The most Frank can hope for is that he can make someone else's life a little better, even if it's not his own. I was sad at the end, but at the same time I'm glad for it -- if the movie had ended with Frank and Libby branching out to fight crime elsewhere, it would have undermined its own message.

The film deconstructs the "what would a real-life superhero be like?" The answer: Travis Bickle. This is more in line with "Taxi Driver" than "Kick-Ass."

I'd really love this movie. I love how dark this movie and also thought the speech at the end was amazing. Everyone was great in this movie.

I agree. This movie is more like Taxi Driver in terms of a misfit anti-hero taking on some type of crime syndicate to rescue someone. Kick-Ass was more of a coming-of-age film.

Also, Rooker in Slither was awesome. That whole movie is awesome, in fact. "Aw don't worry, it's just a bee sting."

I saw that scene you metioned during Spike's Scream Awards 2010, and I admit I didn't know what to think of it.

Also,I think that actor's name you're looking for is Kris Krisstofferson, but I don't know I could be wrong.

Finally, I'm sure you might be shocked that Joss Whedon is directing the upcoming Marvel's Avengers movie which is already in production. Don't worry, I don't think Captain Hammer will be in it because there's already a hero with a hammer and his name is...wait for it...THOR!!!

Ellen Page is cute as a button, but i hated Juno. Just watch MTV's knocked up at 16, at least there the teenager grrrls are actually allowed to be dumb as dirt & not all-knowing avatars of everything cool and hip

Also dig Mickael Rooker. Greg Henry is the bad guy in Body Double too

I loved pretty much everything in this movie but the ending combined with being out of my anxiety meds was really existential and depressing. Brilliantly worked project by Mr Gunn though, I love that dude.

Movie was pretty Bland And Boring as Compared too Kick-Ass Or Defendor... The Ending made me kinda shed a tear for the Protagonist Due to me coming off of a Bad Break up tho... All in All its worth a watch.

I loved freaking Super. As much as I loved Kick-Ass, it ditched the whole point near the end of the movie. I wish there was more Nathan Fillion though.

I had actually never heard of this movie or seen a trailer for it until you mentioned it. It really sounds like a movie my brother and I would get a kick out of, being that we enjoy dark comedies.
Thanks for bringing this movie to my attention. I'm gonna make sure to check it out.

Super is likely my favorite movie of the year thus far. I'd go one further even to say it is easily in my top five favorite movies of all time.

Glad to see you liked it too Brad because I agree with you totally. The whole cast was amazing.

Wow I thought it was hilarious when she got shot in the head. Then he went a killing rampage paying homage to batman and robin.

How is the ending depressing the women he loved got married and had kids. Do you really want a sociopath to pass on his genes.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the creepy rape scene with Ellen Page and Rainn Wilson. Oh my god that was so wrong on so many levels I had to leave the movie for like 5 minutes I was so disturbed by that scene why has no one mentioned it??

I agree, that scene weirded me out too. On the other hand, I found it pretty ironic, considering how it relates to her character from "Hard Candy".

This movie was really good! Rainn Wilson was awesome! i never knew if i should be crying or laughing with him. The death at the end was a little off putting but not to the point where it ruined the movie for me. Overall i give it a 8 outta 10!

Holy cow, dude! I just finished watching this film. I freaking loved it! James Gunn has the wonderful ability to mix emotions up in unconventional ways. It was something he learned from Troma he calls "emotional gumbo". I will agree about the ending, tho. It IS incredibly depressing when you really stop to think about it! All in all, I'd say this is the greatest black comedy I've seen since "Eating Raoul". Thanks so much for directing me to this flick, Brad!

upon doing research for a project I'm working I came across a very obscure movie right up your alley. It simply goes by the name Sorceress http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111244/ . Oddly Linda Blair is in this. Also has Julie Strain to add the cringe factor.

Im pretty sure the girl in 'Hard Candy' is not supposed to be a 'hero' character. She's just the protagonist. Not just because of details like annoyance but as a concept as well.
Sad, that you couldn't understand this.

Unfortunately, plenty of people also consider her the 'hero' because they think the movie portrays a perfectly appropriate way of dealing with child molesters.

I really liked the movie but it is alot darker than something like Kick-Ass which is great in it's own way. The ending was really sad in my opinion but much more realistic which can be a good or bad thing based on your own personal feelings towards it. It isn't the kinda of movie everyone is going to like but I enjoyed it.

What a wonderful flick. Yes this one death at the end was dark but it didn't depress me as the whole thing was still a comedy with some serious undertones. It gave it gravitas.

I tried watching Super and it had me at the beginning, but at the end...It killed it for me. The death was something I didn't expect and it honestly pissed me off. Like, it pissed me off more than it should. I like the beginning of it and the middle, but towards the end...it left a sour note in my mouth. I guess it does depend on the person who watches it, but I was one of those people that ranted about the ending till 2 in the morning.
