Midnight Screenings: "Priest" and "Bridesmaids"
This summer, we're going to attempt to see all of the midnight showing premieres here in Springfield. Last night, Brian, Jake, and I caught the midnight of "Priest."
Meanwhile, we sent Jerrid to the midnight of "Bridesmaids."

That is not a flattering thumbnail of me.

I'm sorry to say it, but: CARLIGHT BLACKOUT FAIL!
but a nice review

omg jerrid, your right, not flattering whatsoever, you still seem cool to me though!

So that's what ROB really looks like, ah? I was kinda expecting a 45 year old man dressed only in denim. So good for you, man!
And this is a fun idea for a series... but you should call this like "The Midnight Movie Gang Do Summer 2011" or something.

You can also see him as a hitman in Hooker with a Heart of Gold.

"Based" off a graphic novel, with probably two things similar, the cross on the forehead, and the fact he fights monsters. The comic takes place in the old west, and is basically about a (singular) priest, who sells his soul to a devil, to kill a group of fallen angels, who are trying to create a hell on earth. How they got a "post apocalyptic" vampire movie out of it is beyond me.

Yeah. I only read a few volumes and have been looking for more, but even I knew this movie was total BS. When I first heard it announced, I thought it would be an awesome movie. I forgot about it, then I saw promos and then the trailer. Wow. This is Halle Berry Catwoman levels of Hollywood making something in name only. Yup. The book was mostly in the old west and had not a single vampire.
And the publisher was behind it. No wonder they closed their doors a month or so before the movie's release. And that was after a couple years of dev hell.
So on top of the horror of such a bad movie, I also have the regret of knowing there might have been a good one made in its stead.
Oh and I saw this turd at a free screening and I still felt ripped off.

As a Catholic, I would have been twice as offended by Priest if it had been half as dumb.
And it is massively dumb. Why does a society that has giant TV screens and motorcycles that go 200 MPH not have radios? How can Karl Urban stand on top of a speeding train and not have his hat blow off? These are among the questions never answered by Priest.
My big question is: Why did I waste $8.50 on this?

who was recording during Jared's review?

I believe Jerrid was holding the camera in his hand.

cewl ya'll saved me from seeing priest and I still ain't ever going to watch bridesmaids~ I wonder what ya'll'a opion will be of the Hangover when it hits!?

Interesting how Karl Urban is in a film that borrows from the '95 Judge Dredd film... Guess what much maligned comic character he's also playing at the moment?
And I could tell Priest would stink from the trailers, it looked unbelievably silly...

I can guess what the next several weeks of this show will include:
May 20th: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (3D)
May 27th: The Hangover Part II (or Kung Fu Panda 2 (3D))
June 3rd: X-Men: First Class
June 10th: Super 8
June 17th: Green Lantern (3D) (or Mr. Popper's Penguins)
Priest is definitely a Blu-Ray rental. I'll ask my dad if he would like to see Bridesmaids because he LOVES watching Jon Hamm in Mad Men.

True story. I work for an entertainment company here in Charlotte and this last week we were recruited to do promo for the film. We handed out mini posters, t-shirts, free passes, etc, and took a lot of pictures. It was a blast, despite the fact that I was suffering heavily from a sinus infection. To be honest, I have no interest in the film, but the promo work was fun. The news is that the company was very happy with what we accomplished and we'll be doing promo for future (hopefully better) releases soon.

You guys should read the "Priest" manga published by Tokyo Pop. Its the original story and is better than the movie. Plus I knew that this was going to be bad when they introduced a female counterpart to the protagonist WHEN THERE IS NO FEMALE COUNTERPART IN THE MANGA!!!

The animated opening was made headed by Genndy Tartakovsky, the same guy responsible for the "Clone War" vignettes and "Samurai Jack" on CN.
He is a Animation God.

Yeah. Makes me wonder why is such an amazing animation director working on such a horrible horrible film. Well. At least that part was nice. That's why.
I know Tartakovsky also story boarded the final battle scenes in Iron Man 2.

That was not the suicide booth, that was a Thx1138 ripoff!

So, the Priest's sidekick is more annoying than Kat Dennings in Thor?
Reply to this
No, if there's one nice thing I can say about the guy in Priest, he wasn't as annoying or as worthless as the Kat Dennings character.

Priest was based on some 3 volume Korean comic released by mnaga publisher Tokyopop. Im curious to see if that's any better, if that hidden better movie was lost in translation.

Jerrid's laughter makes the Bridsmaids review. Otherwise I would have been just not interested in hearing about the movie.

Vampires that are insects... they ripped off an episode of Mighty Max?

It should probably be mentioned that Priest pretty much killed the manga publisher Tokyopop. There were other reasons, but I guess they shouldn't have sank most of their funds into that steaming pile.

Hey Jerrid I didn't know you were a Tim and Eric hater. I think they're funny.

Well, as far as Priest goes, I was stoked when I saw they were making a movie out of the comic series. The comic series has and awesome story and great characters and whatnot, so that is why. When I found out it was a shitty post-apocalyptic(which seems like an oxymoron anyway that constantly pisses me off)I kind of boycotted it and watched Daybreakers and Book of Eli again, figuring I would get a much better experience out of that, with a similar idea behind it all. Read the comic, it really is sweet. At least you guys were able to entertain me/viewers in general with this little review. Thanks for putting up with this bullshit for the sake of your fans.

Both reviews cracked me up. I can't wait to see what your thoughts are on the other summer movies.

Brad love your reviews but I have noticed that whenever you have a friend on who isn't Jerrid, Brian or Sarah you never let them talk. You can see them trying to jump in but you guys don't let them talk. Just an observation but it looks really sad to see them trying to jump in and you guys jumping over their lines
Reply to this
Think maybe it was because Jake was in the backseat and the 2 in front couldn't see him? Regardless, Jake got plenty of time to talk in this, it's called being assertive.

Priest sucks, Bridesmaids is good... Kinda what I figured, but I'm also a bit surprised because Priest seems like it has an interesting story at least.

I just saw Priest a few hours ago, and something just occurred to me. I have never seen a movie before where the film is its own plothole.
So, the film establishes two premises.
A. The film takes place in an alternate reality where Humans and Vampires have been forever at war.
B. The Priests are ninja catholics who fight the vampires.
What bothers me is, now that I think about it, why are their catholics? This is an alternate reality where nothing happened the same way. Are you telling me Jesus was preaching love and compassion and also fighting vampires at the same time? And its not like they are generic religious warriors called Priest, they have crosses. That is a pretty specific religious symbol.

Priest wasn't bad. It wasn't amazing, but was far from a "train wreck".

How did Jerrid draw the short straw?
Reply to this
I'm surprised with all the talk about the films Priest ripped off that there was no mention of Aliens (the vampires have a hive and a queen, and the character called Hicks).

They were showing an extended clip off Bridesmaids just before the showing of Fast 5 here in England, it made me feel sick watching it and I genuinely complained to the cinema about it. I've seen videos of actual exectutions that didn't affect me that bad!

Wow, this is exactly how we've done most of our reviews! In the car after (and before) seeing the film.
Reply to this
I didn't even notice that Brian had parked the car so when the camera panned and I saw him turning around to talk, I was initially thinking "Holy shit, he's still driving!"

Bridesmaids looks so bad. I don't trust Jerrid's opinion. No one else is reviewing it though so i might have to go see for myself. The fact that Tim is in it may give it a small boost.
Reply to this
i'm sure it's been pointed out before, but i have to say it, Priest the manga is NOTHING like Priest the movie. i'm a big Paul Bettany fan, but with Legion and Priest, it's getting hard to admit it to friends
Reply to this
That Bridesmaids review was too fucking funny. Brad has all the great one liners here:
"Don't worry Brad, you'll like this Molly Shannon character, she's annoying!"
I really like these midnight screening reviews. Can't wait to see what other embarrassing movies Jerrid has to see.

oh my god, that guy in the back seat has a rush shirt. Want that shirt so bad

I'm a huge Karl Urban fan, so I -knew- Priest was going to be shit and went in with appropriate expectations.
(I love him, but he loves making crap films. I swear he pics scripts for things he'll have fun in vs. things that will be good)
I MST3Ked the film as I watched it and had a blast- but didn't change that it was an awful film. Watching with a group and some drinks and it'll be fun.

Man, Priest was such a good manga. I read it through as it came out and I knew, I just knew when I heard the movie was coming out that it wouldn't be any good. And it's so sad because if they had stuck with the wild west theme? Think how awesome that could have been! A condemned priest that can't die in the Old West, roaming from town to town and fighting demons as he goes?

JAKE!!!! I HAVE THAT 2112 SHIRT!!! YES!!!
Proof that Jake is cooler than Jerrid
