I think I know why Hogan's Heroes is so popular in Germany: They basically show stupid germans that were still kind of likable.
During Hitler's reign one of the most famous songs in Germany was (loosely translated) "It's good to be stupid".
It's easier to admit that you just were stupid and didn't know what was going on instead of admitting you did something wrong while knowing what you did in its full extend.
I am german and I don't like that a part of the germans want to see themselves in that light. We were aware and we let it happen.
As a german who lives now, it's very hard not to laugh about Hitler the second you hear him. He sounds and talks funny and please look at him... When I watch a documentary and there are speeches of Hitler, I barely understand a thing.
If someone speaks german, he should give Hitler's Mein Kampf stand up show by Serdar Somuncu a try. He's a turkish/german comedian and shows how laughable Hitler was, simply by analyzing his notorious book that is actually banned from selling in Germany. You are allowed to own it but not to get it in any kind of way. It has to materialize out of thin air to legally own it Oo. While the bavarian department of finance earns a HUGE sack of gold every month, by owning the copyright of this piece of garbage and selling it all over the world... well not in germany and israel I think. He makes fun of that while also making fun of the fact that you aren't allowed to publicly read out of the book while not making pauses every now and then. Yeah people have to reflect on what they just heard... or barf in their barf bags or whatever.
All in all I like comedy based on Hitler although it has to be smart because he is such an easy target and he deserves to be pummeled in a way that shows how stupid and selfish he, his believes and actions were.
I have to agree that this show would have been funny as a short sketch, because the thought of someone making a 50's style sitcom based on Adi and Eva is funny... to see someone actually did it is also funny, but the actual sitcom... no, it's not. Reply to this

Actually, you CAN byu "Mein Kampf" in Germany - however, you will most likely only find copies of it in second-hand bookshops because you cannot print new ones. This is prohibited by the Bavarian Department of Finance, claiming to have the copyright of "Mein Kampf" since Hitler's death. It's a shame - from what I know, "Main Kampf" is basically a quite strange and hardly readable wannabe-autobiography most people never read because Hitler had a quite overly-complicated kind of speech. I guess reading it could only help people seeing how strange he and his NS-religion were. Atleast a historical-crictical edition as the (satirical) Titanic Magazine envisioned it would be nice: http://www.titanic-magazin.de/uploads/pics/kritisch-pk.jpg (Hint: the footnotes all read "Nonsense").^^ Reply to this

Oy... What I wouldn't give for a TARDIS and a crowbar about now after seeing this. I mean who thought this would be a good idea?

I'd prefer a Vortex Manipulator but same basic thought process.

I may be the only one, and I am honestly completely fine with that, but when Brad said he didn't think he'd use the theme from this on any of his shows, I wanted to see it become the theme song for DVD-R Hell. Even though it would make no sense what-so-ever, I thought it would be that special kind of funny.
Other wise, I am now incredibly morbidly curious to watch this whole thing, which I haven't felt since seeing the review of Nudist Colony of the Dead. Does that make me weird?

Great review! I'm really looking forward to more of these! You're right, Nazi humor is best when handled by Mel Brooks or any of the comedians you've mentioned.
There's this anime series called "Hetalia" that focuses on the Axis Powers as the main protagonists. I'm still weirded out by it. Apologies for the shameless plug, but my partner did do a review on it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88UReHGifmA) if you're morbidly curious.
Keep up the awesome work!
(BTW - I'll be in IL this weekend! Going to the land of Channel Awesome...)

LOl I remember this.. Came across it a couple years back while surfing IMDB for war movies..
I thought it was kinda funny. Then again I have a twisted sense of humor.

Yeah I've seen this before and it's way out there and you definitely need to know the key Nazi players to find it funny but that being said anything that makes fun of Hitler and the Nazis is gold in my book. I love material that satirizes Hitler and takes away his demigod status and just makes him look stupid which he was

Dude, you should do an episode on the pilot of a show caled "Poochinski" it was a bout Peter Boyle as a dog who is also a cop

This one line has made me laugh, AND I'm from Poland:
"When I finally get to invade Poland, who would be the first to know? The Poles?! No, Rosa Goldenstein!"
I'm very, very sick bastard, if this makes me laugh...

Atleast a historical-crictical edition as the (satirical) Titanic Magazine envisioned it would be nice: http://www.titanic-magazin.de/uploads/pics/kritisch-pk.jpg
(Hint: the footnotes all read "Nonsense").^^

There's a finnish daily comic strip (called Fingerpori) which has starred Hitler and nazis so many times they have composed a book containing only nazi related jokes. That comic is generally considered quite funny, but unfortunately most of it's jokes are word plays and cannot be translated very well.

This show is pretty ahead of its time. (reminiscent of That's my Bush [plus didn't Parker and Stone have an internet show cancelled after one episode?])
The writer was Rory Bremner's partner - worked on spitting image etc. Quite a big hitter.
Also, don't forget, this was a superb time for edgy British comedy, and Fist of Fun was only three years away - This could easily be a Stewart Lee bit.
Don't forget to support Ray Peacock! http://peacockandgamble.com/

This reminds me of the german character in Son of the Beach. I actually think there's a place for this type of humor. I can't really speak for Heil honey since I only saw these small segments, but it doesn't look any good. Bad delivery, I suppose.

Again, you’re doing the world a service by covering this. For the longest time I thought this show was just an urban legend.
Maybe in the future you’ll uncover The Day the Clown Cried (the Jerry Lewis Nazi concentration camp clown movie) or Him (the gay Jesus pr0n).

On the subject of speculation for future episodes, might as well ask:
Brad, you own a copy of the Roger Corman Fantastic Four movie, don't you? If so, can we get a review of that in the future? I know there are several reviews of it out there, but one coming from you would be pretty awesome!

The ending credits that make the opening for 'Heil Honey' is from Dad's Army - which serves to highlight the latter sitcoms lack of quality even further.
Dad's Army is a pillar of British comedy and one of the best sitcoms of all time. Worth checking out if you ever get a chance Brad.

Yes an extremely awful idea in poor taste. But then ANYONE can work that out for themselves without a self satisfied camp american telling us every few seconds. I found the presenting of this clip to be of more poor taste than the show! Why do americans always sound like c*%nts?

I sometimes get mad about that Donald Duck cartoon. It's a really good cartoon, it's a very obvious pro-America propaganda piece if anyone watches it, and it's a great insight into history. But people just take the whole thing out of context to slam Disney, and it can't be aired because of idiots being offended.

That awkward moment when someone thinks that making a light-hearted comedy sitcom about Hitler is a good idea.
Wow...That was in such poor taste I actually have a bad taste in my mouth, as well as feeling really uncomfortable. Hitler and Nazis can be satirised, but they way these people went about it was the wrong way. This seemed to make light of the whole situation, and almost seemed to trying to paint Hitler as a person we should like (at least within this series)...He killed millions of people, it's not going to happen, guy! Surely he had friends that were like, "Dude, not cool. No one is going to watch this show." But then again, someone who tried to make a sitcom about Hitler's friends may all be Neo-Nazis...
That theme song was really annoying...It made me feel anger it was that annoying.

The program at the start of the DVD-R is the ending credits of an episode of Dad's Army, whether or not you merely didn't say it purely for the script to be funny I am just dropping it in there.
Though being an elderly unit of British soldiers marching along looking in to the distance to see Hitler in his own sitcom, I would be confused to.

With that last line,"I don't like the idea of something existing, if I can't get a copy of it", I know exactly how you feel! I too am always looking out for the most unknown and unseen video out there. Keep up the hunt, Brad! Sure, you may come across total fecal matter like "Heil Honey I'm Home", but it's damn funny to see the look in your friend's eyes when you look at them and say: 'Hitler sitcom? Yeah, it's for real. I seen it.' Where did you get that bit of video from Turn-On? Does the whole show exist out there somewhere? (Besides George Schlatter's basement, of course.) Keep up the great work, man. Anyone out there have "The Day the Clown Cried?"

Brad, if you can do a review for the one episode shows; that would be awesome. Especially Turn-On, if you can find any trace of the first episode. A single 40 second clip from the unaired 2nd episode is floating around; but nothing from the 1st episode is turning up anywhere. A CBS official said that the pacing, chops and cuts were so fast that people at the studio were physically disturbed. That just makes me want to watch it even more.
Awesome post though.

Okay, a little late, but... There was actually something quite similar in current german TV, except is much better. "Obersalzberg" is a parody of a series called "Stromberg", with Hitler as boss of an office. "Stromberg" itself is something like a remake of "The Office" in german and is also known as one of the best Series currently running on german TV. "Obersalzberg" now is a series of sketches running in a show (Switch Reloaded) which does sketches about TV Series. It's like.... the Office, only with Hitler as David Brent, everybody else is a Nazi and they run WW II, with Goebbels as Jennifer.
I know it sound stupid, but really it isn't. I don't know if somebody ever translated it into English (and probably some jokes will get lost by it, anyway), but if somebody here speaks some German: You can still find it on Youtube and the like.

Denica Fairman went on to do a lot of anime dubs in the 90's for manga video in the uk (some of which went to america and other english speaking countries). She was good too, she'd the voice of B-ko in project A-ko. I always sensed she was having a good time.

What's hilarious is that they tried to come up with a Jewish name and settled on "Goldenstein". Were they thinking of Goldstein? The only famous Goldenstein is not Jewish, but the name of a castle in Salzburg, Austria, around 30 miles from where Hitler was born.
