Midnight Screening: "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"

Our thoughts after seeing the midnight of "Pirates 4."  Brad, Jillian and Jake caught the 3-D showing, while Brian and Sarah saw it in 2-D.

Well, like my namesake, Green Lantern was designed with 3D in mind. It's potentially in my top 5 movies to see this season.

Pretty much what I expected. Was hoping for more now that they got rid of Orlando Bloom. Oh well, I'll wait for it On Demand.

I don't know, I dug it more than two and three...I was excited seeing no Liz and Will and seeing Jack being more himself again after getting kind of retarded in the other two. Two side characters NOBODY remembers that I love had a lot more screen time so I was psyched about that. The story was easier to follow than the other, you could actually follow who was siding with who and what the fuck everybody's motivation was and Penelope Cruz wasn't as obnoxious as I thought she'd be. It was fun, hope they stop here....plus Ian Mcshane was a pimp.

So yeah, it was dumb but it was fun. And the 3D was OK, it was that atmospheric 3D disney does which is awesome cause it doesn't hurt my eyes. Plus I saw it at the Disney official el capitan theater in Hollywood so people were dressed up and fucking paper coins rained from the sky and they had a shit ton of the costumes there to look at in a PACKED old school theater so that was a fun way to see it.

    SPOILER:
Oh, and they mention that when you take somebodies years when you drink the cup, you take all the years they would have if they had good fortune. So, even if you drink the years of somebody who is about to die from a prophecy you'd get the years they would have had if there was no prophecy...yeah I got nothing but that was their line of explanation.

Why would anyone bother with this movie after two and three? Especially in dark 3D.

Did you hear that there is a company that created 2D glasses for people to take to 3D movies? No joke, glasses you can wear to make 3D 2D. They did it for people who get sick watching 3D movies, which is a good idea because every big movie is now coming out in 3D so they can charge more for tickets. Of course, it will still be dark.

Speaking of paying extra for crappy 3D, RMC theater in Jacksonville only charges an extra $2.00 for 3D. That makes it $8.25 for 3D matinees and $9.25 for 3D shows after six. The 3D still sucks and it is NOT the greatest theater, but if you know the 3D isn't going to be worth it why pay AMC's prices? Having to drive from Springfield to Jacksonville may cause gas prices to cancel out any savings, but there is still a chance it might be cheaper if you have a group of people. And yeah, I am just trying to be helpful. I have no connection to that theater other than it being where I see a lot of movies. It really is not a great theater, but it is okay.

      What the FFFF.... $9.25???

Guess how much it's here in Finland. Not $9.25, not $10.25, NOT $11.25... give up already? It's $17.00 (12 €). And in weekends that's $20.00 (14 €). Well... at least the 2D movies are two euros cheaper.

Just saw this movie today. It was... OK. I didn't hate it. At times it got a bit boring. Best parts were at the king's court, when Blackbeard entered and the ending. I liked Depp in this but like you guys said he didn't seem to enjoy it as much as... say, the first one. Blackbeard was f*cking badass.

An OK movie. If you wanna see it, go see it. It was one of the better pure entertainment flicks I've seen in a while.

3D movies are a complete joke but if you are going to shell out the cash, I would go to Jacksonville too. Besides you'll see my ultra famous ass there shoving popcorn in my grill.

You know what's awesome about selective media? You don't have to watch what you don't want to watch, and as an added awesome bonus, you are not required to comment on the thing you don't want to watch.

I think the reason why Jack Sparrow worked in the first movie and not any of the subsequent ones is he's really not meant to be a main protagonist. He's a plot catalyst, and goofy trickster type, but he only really works when he's playing off other characters. You can't just throw him in by himself and expect him to work.

Sir, the palm tree has branches and coconuts, and the trick will not work under those circumstances. That was their point, and it was a good one: it highlights tricky cinematography that is meant to insult the audience rather than offer them immersion.

I read that it was shot in 3D but the VFX were rendered in 2D then those VFX were post converted. To save money and keeping with the cost down most of those battles were land based. I guess having ship battles were too costly. great review guys and girls I agree with what you said not very good. I look forward to the rest of your midnight reviews

I guarantee you Depp had zero fun with every Pirates movie except the first, because Disney didn't give a damn about that one so Depp just ran wild, inventing the Cap'n Jack persona purely out of a desire to see how far he could push them. But when the franchise became a hit, for some reason Disney put all of it on the director and gave him absolute control, so what we're seeing now is the cinema equivalent of Verbinski's endless money shot all over the audience, especially the guys in pirate costumes.

I guess I'm easier to please than most. My whole thinking was "As long as there's no Orlando Bloom or Kiera Knightly, and Jack and Barbossa are awesome, I'm sold!" And I totally got that, so I was sold. I loved every minute of it! AND I saw it in 2D. Seriously, f*** 3D. So hard.

Also, apparently the 5th one is a standalone movie, so hopefully we won't see the clergyman again. I would've hated him if he actually co-starred. He was a plot device, nothing more, so I didn't mind him.

Having just come home from seeing the fourth installment myself, I've got to say that I think it is a step in the right direction. Mind you, I'm an overall fan of the series, even Johnny Depp's swaggering melodrama. No offense to Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly, but they'd have been dead weight, and it was time to cut them from the story. That let the franchise get back to where I think it belonged... just a straightforward pirate adventure. Even the change of cast shows that, cutting the recurring mains down to Jack, Barbosa, and Gibbs, leaving out much of the superfluous comic relief. As enjoyable as they may have been in previous movies, they would have been out of place in this one. This one just set out to be an adventure and stuck to it for the most part. There were some romantic elements, but they were more seasoning than substance.

Second, with so many summer movies coming out are there some that you will deliberately not go for these reviews or only send some people to see them? Movies such as Cars 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Transformers 3, Harry Potter 7 Pt. 2, and Breaking Dawn Pt. 1?

The reason this movies make money is some people want to see this. So there will be more sequels. I have never seen any of the pirates of caribean or harry potter. The cinemas are full of shit in these days. I would rather watch an old clint eastwood western again than stupid shit like this.
But this is just my opinion.

This was great. You need to do all of your reviews with other people

    Brad reviews alone:

Likes the movie:"This was a good movie, I like movies like that, so I liked this movie, and this was a good movie..."

Hates the movie:"this movie sucked. I would rather (insert metaphor) than see this movie. This movie was so bad that (insert other metaphor)"

With other people, we hear discussions on the movie, and get info on WHY the movie was good or bad.
