Eli Roth's problem is that he gives the impression he watches loads of films on weed. Cabin Fever makes not a lick of sense, but is too smug and hip to be fun. All his main characters are crude and stupid and his dialog is abysmal. I like the revenge killing in the toilet at the end of Hostel. it's got that Torn Curtain feel. Hostel 2 is not too bad, but it's like recent Tarantino movies. Incidentally, Cinema Snob, you left out the best part of this movie in your review: when they zoom into that guy wearing the evil-looking mask and Kendall screams like a little girl! He screams girlisly quite a lot in this movie.

Hey! I kind of like the 1994 version of The Shadow. Of course, it's hard for me to not like anything with a Jim Steinman theme song.

The thing I found funniest for some reason was there actually is a horrible film where Regan is the killer, and slaughters like 30 hippies.

Upon reading the top tag line of the Pieces posters, I thought of another famed slasher movie the Snob could tackle: the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
It might be something up the Snob's alley.

Yeah, it still kinda baffles me that it's okay to see slaughter of humans but not a pair of breasts.
Where did we go wrong?

Because this is a slasher movie, not a porn. Isn't gore the point of a slasher film, and thus, be stupid to censor? It's like saying it would be stupid if the censors cut out all the gore/violence in a porn, but not the nudity/sex.
Reply to this
Breasts aren't porn. Even some things with full on sex scenes aren't porn.
Porn is primarily aimed at getting people off.
I don't think that's the intent of Anti Christ or Bais Noir or even some of the scenes in Caligula.

I love how everyone on campus is so nonchalant about all the gruesome chainsaw murders going on. In 1998, there was a decapitation murder at Lindenwood College in St Charles, MO and the whole campus went on lockdown. Everybody was pretty much on edge until the guy who did it was caught. They didn't go for nude swims alone or go walking alone at night.

I may be a bit biased considering Pieces may be my favorite slasher flick of all time, but this has to be your BEST review so far! It has everything: Pod People, 1942, Human Centipede, racism, revenge for accidentally punching women, everything I tell you!
Also, I was gonna call you out for not making fun of the "BASTARD!" scene, but then I immediately figured that would be your endcap clip. And I was right. Go me.

Nice! I've been waiting for this for longer than you can imagine. Thank you, Snob.

There was another tagline on the Australian poster:

I saw that on the American VHS art as well, Vestron Video era! I saw this on video cassette, once owned a crappy budget DVD copy, and now am proud owner of the Grindhouse Releasing special edition. I can't say I love it, but I admire it for attempting a giallo tone even it does come out cheesier than Velveeta. I've been hoping Brad would do this since I heard about Simon's passing, and now it's here, with Obscurus Lupa and Kung Tai Ted cameos, too. As Castor Troy would say, "Bra-fucking-vo." Only thing missing is a soundbite of "Inky Dinky Doo Dah Morning" over Brad changing clothes, which is kind of frightening.

I really hate to criticize you because you are funny and this show is great. But
When I saw that you were reviewing Pieces I said to myself, "really?" Then you started talking about the movie out of character and about the mst3k Pod People. I left your site and first watched Pieces by itself and then the mst3k of Pod People. Then I watched this.
It's not that you weren't funny (the Reagan and Lupa jokes were great) but the review was less funny than the movies they were making fun of. Let me put it this way so that everyone understands.
If a reviewer/comedian has riffed on Airplane or Naked Gun please let me know. Because all I've ever seen in reviews like this are references to funny jokes in those movies.
I hope that make sense because I'm sure my laundry is done by now and I don't want it to get all wrinkly.

Bravo, bravo, amazing review, I'm french from Quebec Canada, and I do not want to offend, but the Lupa cameo was so funny. I love your stuff, the more you do it the better you get. Ha Ha Lupa cameo that was great.
This movie had a huge WTF ending but it made me laugh at how random it was.

Awww, no "Wind in my eyes" reference?!

Very informative, I didn't recognize our hero to be the guy from Pod People. Also the reason behind the random Bruceploitation moment, even though I think you really need any justification for adding random martial art, hehe. I love Pieces so much, and I'm happy to hear you share your honest opinion about it at the beginning. Even though I know you are a fan of this stuff, it's hard to know at times if it's you or The Snob trashing a movie.
I also smiled at the Nightmare City clip. I've got a weakness for that movie.

Ok, Kung Tai ted beating the shit out of the Snob: funny.
Lupa cameoing just to mock him: HILARIOUS.

Wait, was that Sylar? aka Zachary Quinto? When did he direct a movie?

the video is still loading, and Im already excited, LOL.
I am big fan of dissing JP Simon, i love his disastrous movies, i remember watching a few of them as a kid on the local networks. He is worthy of maybe a special or a few episodes devoted to his movies.
Also, if you ever find the time, i would really love it if you would do some reviews on "80's vigilante films". I remember you review for The Exterminator (a Brad Jones review, not the Cinema Snob), but how about snobbing The Executioner 2, a movie sequel with no part one, LOL
or, maybe, i dont know
The Exterminator 2
Wild Thing (1987)
Street Law
Death Wish 4 (most people would say 3, but i love part 3... i believe that part 4 has a lot of goofs that are hilarious, just prime for snobbing, even "Machete" is there)
Actually, many J Lee Thompson movies from the 80s can get the snob treatment, as they are enjoyable as well as disastrous.
Saludos desde Puerto Rico, the land of Bacardi, "progress island" for all you sarcastic MST3k lovers (like me)

Damn, that's the same Reagan picture from the reanger shack in "Pod People"....and some of the same dub actors came back to do voices! Notice that the Killer's mother in 1942 has the same vice as Tommy's mother in "Pod People." Jesus, this guy was yet another Jess Franco/Ted V. Mikels - and I thought it was bad enough that Ed Wood had clones in Coleman Francis and Larry Buchanan.

Oh where to begin with Pieces? Well let's start with almost the entire cast of Pod People is there as previously mentioned. I was waiting for Robin Williams to make an appearance during the Bluto beserker scene but hey we move on. As for its rather disturbing and bloody ending, the upside Rick/Kendall is now a a lovely concert soprano. Until of course James Gandolfini and the rest of the mob want a cut of the action.

I love Pieces. It's proper exploitation.
Every ting that was fashionable at the time was bunged in whether it fitted or not. It's just a hoot.
You watch it and it's sort of entertaining, but at the back of your brain you're thinking:"is this a movie or is he just trying to pick-up girls"?
Reply to this
I gotta say, I don't see what everybody's problem is with Eli Roth. I was entertained enough by the Hostel movies. You gotta see the guy knows his horror.

That Bluto looking guy could've played Gregor Clegane back then.

Reagan has done plenty of suspic... sorry, wanted to make a good Exorcist joke but couldn't think of one.
Does the killer have a portrait of Grimace above his fireplace?
Poison the Nostalgia Critic's tea? What is that a reference to? Is this going to pop up in an upcoming Nostalgia Critic episode?

lol, that ending reminded me of Lamberto Bava's "Macabre".
I remember seeing clips of "Pieces" in that slasher documentary called "Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Genre". Looks fun.

Good review again, Juan Piquer Simon is an interesting director with nice, trashy movies.
About the ending: The first time I saw it and now again, it reminds me of the first "Friday the 13th", were in an oterwise non-fantasy-flic there comes a turn to the fantastic as a last shock in the very last scene of the movie. Nice tribut or shamless copy? You decide!

OK, wwhile I do enjoy Brad's reviews, I just had to comment on the scene where the boy murders his mother. I mean, I have nothing against depicting children with serious problems or even child sexuality, just as long as a)the children don't actuallypartake in the violence and b)if they have to, they would have to be old enough to understand and not graphically do the things they do. There was a movie called sweet sweetback which had a teen performing (other wise simulated) sex but it still is wrong because I hear that the scene is rather graphic.

Actually Cinema Snob, the urine coming out of the women at 10:50 can actually be explained. When a person dies, all their body fluids come out because when you die air is released and drains all your urine.

Wait, was that Bruce Le as the "kung fu professor"? Kinda looked like it might have been him... but IMDB credits no one in the role.
Also, this makes the second film to feature both Paul Smith AND Bruceploitation. The first being Bruce Li's "Return Of The Tiger".
