      HUGE CONTINUITY ERRORS

Hank Mccoy SHOULD NOT have changed to Beast in this movie because he was not BLUE in XMen 1 in the news conference. I say this because they actually USED a reference from XMen 1 at the very beginning in the concentration camp.

If they were going to fuck up continuity that means the first movie never happened and the third movie never happened because of the whole Jean Gray kid scene at the beginning.

This movie takes clips from other movies and is it's OWN movie with no connection to others other than key points that rip off those movies.

Awesome I''m defenutly watching this this weekend! Also, I'm surpriced none of ya'll pointed out that Magento's helmet in this movie was exsaculy like it was in the old school comics with the kinda saw-blade pattern around it!

Hey, that just gave me an idea that bit about the Corman Fantastic Four movie you should do a Snob Review of that on DVD-Hell!!! Since it's never had a legalDVDor VHS release!

The movie looks shitty and boring, more generic Hollywood CGI-driven crap. The review certainly doesn't make it sound interesting. I have no doubt you'll forget about it by next Friday.

Also, all comic-books and superheroes have been completely fucking done to death to an absurd degree. They make the Tarantino indie-crime-movie-ripoff craze of the mid-1990's pale in comparison. The least they could do is adapt more modern comics, like Lobo, Preacher, Spawn, Transmetropolitan, instead of shitty, incredibly dated comics from the 50's and 60's, where the heroes wear leotards and spandex while fighting killers and psychopaths.

Having said that, I loved the banter between you guys, particularly the references to the "Lawnmower Man." Hilarious.

Wow, troll much? Quite honestly, the comics you mention, while good, will not get the green light. And quite frankly, Spawn was not all that great as a book or movie. I would love to see a Preacher or Transmetropolitan movie, but I live in the real world. Movies take money, and if a studio doesn't think it'll make money, then they won't make a movie like that. If you hate these movies so much, go make your own damn movie.

Preacher is being (or trying to be) adapted into a film. Unfortunately, it's been trapped in development hell for the past ten years.

Finally, you talk about "modern" comics being adapted into film. Well, get a look at Priest. Oh, wait, it's shit.

Why is every one Hating on Spawn! Yes the movie wasn't at all great but I lay the blame on the studeos at the times input not on the matteral! It was the mid-90s and it was a movie about a burnt up assassin from Hell looking to kill the people responcible for his death and it wasn't astrait out horror movie and CGIatthetime wasn't thebest unless your name was Spielburg or Lucas you didn't getthe top work!

Now, I do agree with the rest of you guys on that Ilike allthe classic superhero movie and what not!

Preacher was going to be an HBO mini-series for a good long while but even they were afraid it's content would getthem sued so it's traanslation into film might be an even longer and bumpier road ahead and more than likely it going to be butchered and toned down to the point it's like Wanted was to me it hadthe same name and 1st 10mins of the book then the rest was just some one else's scriptthat they couldn't sale on thier own and decided to sneak it into another movie! and that means it'll be total SHIT!!!

Funny you bring up Transmetropolitan since Patrick Stuard has been campaning for the lead role for years!

The Lobo movie they were trying to make was another generic movie staple knockoff... in that the one they were all setto film and release but something came up and killed it was just a Critters 2 wripoff! Inwhich an evil band of alien outlaws escape to Earh and the alien authorities send Lobo down to round thm up and guess where it all takes place!? in a small mid-westren town where Lobo would befriend a teenaged girl and/or boy to help him in the whole fishout of water Urban Comando style thing till he either finds and captures or more than likely kills the bad aliens! an that isn't Lobo! I want a Hard-R Lob that slaughter his enemies and uses a gaint gut hook and his I'm sure would've been another wimpy PG13 movie!

Speaking again of the whole modern comics debait I do believe the Avenger's movie and series is heavily based more in the Ultimate Universe!

Also, I like The Boys comic! AndIstill like superheroes! I just like different takes on them! and that movie is still in the works to but highly dought it comes out as anything good or reconizable to it's source!

I thought that the special effects were inconsistent - they looked okay at some points, but other times they were really jarring (especially the scene at the beginning where Erik's throwing the tables and stuff around, that just looked extremely fake). I really liked the actors who did Charles and Erik, but the others were just okay.

I think I actually get what Jerrid was saying.

Xavier was playing the sort of "law" of the movie. Not to the "stick up his ass" degree that Cyclops was, but he was clearly the leader and rule setter.

Magneto was the rogue-ish rebel. Once again, not the rampant, raged out degree of Wolverine, but it's there.

The villain is Magneto-ish. I get that it's partially because he has lots of Magneto's imagery, but his calm demeanor, his sinister, but charming nature, calls back strongly to Ian McKellan's performance in the other movies. And his stance on mutants vs. humans is the same as Erik's, as was already established.

Emma Frost is sort of the Mystique character of this movie. She's cool, quiet, and there's a sexy, deadly intensity, sort of like Mystique in the later films. Also, her transformative powers are SORT of, not really, but sort of, like Mystique. Also, also, she's the sidekick and sort of right-hand woman to the Magneto-esque character, like Mystique in the other movies.

Conversely, Mystique in this movie, is not the world-wearied person she is in the later movies. She's a teenage girl that just wants to be normal and is haunted by the ramifications of her powers...sort of like Rogue in the first movie.

With all of that said, just because their roles are similar, it doesn't mean it's the same movie. It told a completely different tale, with completely different character motivations, and I'm more inclined to agree with everyone else in the car: the movie was a badass epic-fest of awesome, and I think I enjoyed it as much as the first if not more. Incredible movie. But I DO get where Jerrid is coming from.

And what is the deal with douchebags going to see these movies? We had a group of 5 guys that were just obnoxious. During the part where Magneto says "you'll be hunted down and enslaved" and they cut to Darwin, they just started cracking up, howling. While admittedly funny, it wasn't THAT funny.

While this movie is FAR FAR superior to X-Men 3 and Wolverine Origins, I have to admit, I had issues because. And no, its not because the movie didn't follow the comics. That doesn't bother me, because I don't expect them to follow it exactly. What kinda gets me is that they DIDN'T stick with their OWN movie continuity. For example...
    1. Xavier was walking during "Wolverine" in 1979, but in First Class he's crippled in 1962. Kinda of a big movie franchise error there...
    2. Emma Frost is in her 30s in First Class, but in "Wolverine" she's in her early teens and oddly enough related to a Native American. Granted, I prefer this one massively, but still... two Emmas.
And I had the nit-picky stuff, like Banshee and Moria being Americanized (what is so hard about hiring actors with accents?) Or that they never explained Havok's relationship to Cyclops or hint at the Mystique+Azrael=Nightcrawler thing. And then the thing with Darwin verse Shaw felt really just weak-sauce for a character with his powers.
And while I loved Hugh Jackman's appearance, I really find it odd how Xavier and Wolverine were constantly running into each other before the first X-Men film.
Like I said, it was a good movie, but it didn't feel quite perfect for me.

You also forgot that Xavier was still walking and friends with Magneto in the early 80s in the beginning of X3 when they went to meet Jean for the 1st time!
And like that other dude said if you look at it as if they ignored the 3rd and Wolverine movie and this is like an alternate contenuity.. It looks like they're going to pull a Superman Returns except hopefully alot better! In that they are going to ignore the shitty sequals and kinda redo and pick up where the last good movie left off with an all new contenuity! Sorta like how Superman returns pretend like Superman 3 and Superman 4: The Quest for Peace never ever ever happened, but e know it does, but hopefully we can just say this new version is a LOT BETTER!

But, there still is another Wolverine to come that is suppose to fallow The 1st Wolverine movie... and, I can't think of a way around that outside them saying it was all a dream or Wolvie's screwy memory we watched not how the event actually happened! As that movie alone had so many contenuity errors that I'm surprised they let that kind of crap slip threw their figures! Common there had to be at last one person like yeah that won't work!

      Sorry Rambling!!!

I've also heard that the First Class movie ISN'T a prequel to the main three x-movies, or the wolverine movie. Its on its own in continuity. I'm not sure if thats true or not, but thats what i've heard. That makes the continuity errors disappear, if you consider it a stand-alone, like a mini-series comic or one-shot

(Also you forgot the fact that Havok is in this movie and is about 20, and while he's an OLDER summers brother, he's 20ish in the 60s, and Scott is 20ish in the first X-men movie, thats a HUGE chunk of time)

Well, here's the thing. It IS a prequel. The director, producer, production staff and studio have all classified it as a prequel to all four original films. The thing is, the movie ignore so much of the continuity from the original films, that it FEELS like a reboot. But then as I mentioned above, they show stuff like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Rebecca Romijn, which directly connects the films to this one. It's really messed up like that.

And I'm afraid you're a bit mistaken. In the main X-comics, Cyclops is the older brother and Havok is the younger brother. In the Ultimate Universe, Havok is the older brother, and Cyclops is the younger one.

But either way, I didn't forget about Havok's brother relationship in the movie, because it never existed in the films. They never established Cyclops having a sibling in the previous movies, which could have implied he was an only child. Due to the age difference, I'm assuming that in the movie universe Havok is either Cyclops' father or more likely his uncle. Since the movie continuity is already so different from the comics, this wasn't a huge issue.

But when the movie ignores its own continuity...

Does that mean it's not a bad movie? Of course not. It's kinda disappointing that they went with making this a prequel of the films, since it plays very very fast and loose with the established continuity from the other X-Men films. If they're going to take that route, why not just do a a reboot.

Others have already stated it but the idea that X-Men First Class fits in line with the continuity of the other movies really doesn't stand up to any kind of scrutiny. As has been said before, the opening of X3 where Xavier and Magneto are going to talk to Jean Grey in the 80's could not have happened if First Class's continuity is added to the mix as Charles and Erik would have been split by this point already, not working towards recruiting for Xavier's school, plus Xavier was walking. Then the 2 completely different versions of Emma Frost from Wolverine and this movie. But lets switch gears a bit, someone said if you ignore the existence of Last Stand and Origins that it works. This is also very VERY wrong. In the second movie Magneto states he helped Xavier build Cerebro thus how he was able to help Striker create an exact replica of it, in First Class the prototype Cerebro was built by Beast and Magneto had nothing to do with it nor did he have anything to do with Xavier's school after the end of First Class, so this assertion would not work. Rewind to the first movie where Xavier is surprised that Magneto's helmet is keeping him out of his mind after the brotherhood captures Rogue when in First Class it becomes a pivotal point in what keeps Xavier from stopping Magneto from killing Shaw or from just controlling him to keep him from launching the missiles back at the humans. Anyways, I don't feel this makes the movie weaker in any way, it's still an incredible movie and in my opinion better than the originals (though I still do like the first 3, yes even Last Stand to some degree). I look at it as more of a reboot than anything within the established movie continuity, and an amazing one at that.

I agree with Jerrid on this one.  I really did not like this movie at all.  There are 3 big issues I have with this movie.  *Spoilers Ahead*

    1.  Emma Frost's age - if we go by "Wolverine: Origins then she was younger than the January Jones Emma Frost, but this film took place before after this movie..... also Professor X is older than he is in this movie.  I'm assuming that this means that "Origins" is no longer a part the continuity.  If that is the case then I will retract this statement and be fine with it.

    2.  These are not the real "First Class" - The original X-Men were Cyclops, Beast, Iceman, Angel, and also Marvel Girl joined at the end of the first issue.  If this is a prequel then all of these characters should have been able to be here as long as you believe that "Origins" has been taken out of the continuity.  Don't get me wrong I do enjoy these characters for the most part especially Havok and Darwin but Mystique was never Charles Xavier's adopted sister and she was not in the X-men till much later in the series.

In all truth I actually liked this film and can easily just ignore these problems but there is one thing I cannot deal with.

    3.  WHY DID THEY KILL DARWIN! - Darwin's ability , for those who don't know, is called "reactive evolution."  What this means is his body changes to make sure he will survive anything.  So what happens when Shaw makes Darwin eat a ball of energy?  Does he shoot it out of his mouth like a laser?  Does he absorb the energy like Shaw can?  Does it shoot it out of his eyes like Cyclops?  Nope, he explodes.  Yep, he just dies.  What the hell!  This character had such potential and I really wanted to see him do something more that grow gills.  This is where the movie just lost me.

As far as movies go, it wasn't bad and in fact if it didn't have any ties to the other movies I would give it 4/5 stars.  But with it having the problems of continuity and the killing of the almost completely invincible and  completely awesome Darwin, I just cannot recommend this movie so I give it a 2/5.

So I know a lot of people will disagree with me but oh well, its my opinion and I stand by it.  Think what you want and if you liked the movie then good for you, but I didn't.

Sorry, but those are dumb reasons for not liking the film, especially your second point. From the first film they never completely adhered to the comic continuity, and pretty much no Marvel/DC superhero film stays completely true to the source. A couple of examples from the earlier X-Men films are Pyro's nationality, and Juggernauts relationship with Xavier.

I haven't seen the film yet, and wasn't originally planning to but, there seems to be a lot of praise, especially from comic book fans, so it might be worth seeing.

Anyway, on continuity, I'd prefer movies just tell a good story without having to worry about being sticklers for continuity. Continuity is nice, but especially when making an adaptation of such a massive comic, the audience should be willing to let the details be fudged so they can streamline the storytelling. I dunno, maybe that's just me.

As much as I liked certain parts of this film, the more I think about the supporting performances in this film the more I loathe them. January Jones and the girl who played Mystique were terrible. I felt like I was looking through a foggy window.
And the references to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein were as subtle as a train crashing into an airplane over the pacific.
Seriously. The lines referring to Frankenstein were so poorly constructed and long.
"I am Frankenstein's monster and I am looking for my master do you see the parallels yet because it is very similar."

personally i think this movie was good. like them i went in wanting to hate it too. shoot infact i didn't even want to go at all until i was surprised by the word of mouth this movie was getting. i saw it and i was astonished on how good it was. it did take me by surprise. btw if you guys want to send jerrid to a bad movie you don't have to wait until smurfs comes out. there is a movie coming out this week called judy moody and the not bummer summer. that looks like it would drive any mature adult off the wall.

I wouldn't call this a "debate" so much as "the boys shout down Jerrid because they can't get over the fact that it wasn't X3." Seriously, I get that you guys liked it, but stop jacking off the movie for two seconds while Jerrid talks.
