Midnight Screenings: "Bad Teacher" and "Cars 2"

Brad and Jerrid share their thoughts on "Bad Teacher."

Then, Jake and Virtual Boyd talk about "Cars 2." Was it as highly sexual of an experience as "Mr. Popper's Penguins"?

I loved Cars 2. Sure it's not a masterpiece like the last few Pixar films, but it's them going back to the more lighthearted films they were doing in their infancy, and throwing a bone to the younger crowd after psychologically scarring them for three films in a row.

Their films have always been great for children. A sad movie is not psychologically scarring.

Well, it was a dark and intense scene, and the movie was really made for people who saw the first two Toy Story movies, which means that it was intended for an audience of people that are at LEAST in their mid to late teens. Of course your niece was scared; she's freaking four years old. However, I doubt that she'll be forever afraid of incinerators because of this movie. If that was true, then I'd never be able to look at sperm whales the same way again after seeing the terror that is Monstro from Pinocchio.

Movies like this won't fucking TRAUMATIZE little kids. Having a terrible accident that results in serious injury or death will traumatize little kids. Your niece may still hide from the incinerator scene, but she hasn't even entered kindergarten yet. She'll be fine.

I bet Brad always gets to go to the "main"/"better"/"not kids" one, due to it being his site.

I mean, think about it, he is now the only one to have gone to every "main" movie.

Other than that, names out of a hat? Or, if someone doesn't care about the "main" movie?

If it's random, I pity whoever doesn't get to see Harry Potter opening night.

I am a mother and I would NEVER take my son to a midnight showing. I even yelled at one woman who brought her 5 year old kid to the store and then asked him to get her bread all alone at 3 in the morning and then it took him like 15 mintues to find the bread and then find his mother and when he comes back she yells at him for taking too long and for grabing the wrong type of bread and just about ready to slap him. It was the last straw for me. It also got me suspended for 3 days. But it was worth it. I always wanted to tell off these stupid parents. Now I got to so hey one thing off the bucket list lol.

After the first Cars left very little impact on me (although it was not a bad film at all), I wasn't expecting much at all from the sequel - in fact, leading up to the release I echoed the sentiment above about Cars not really deserving a sequel (especially when The Incredibles doesn't have one yet). However, after seeing it in 2D last night (also a midnight show with some friends), I was completely awestruck by how much more interesting, entertaining, and fun this movie was in comparison to its predecessor. Michael Caine's character was a complete bad-ass and everything involving the espionage subplot (short of the more annoying Mater moments) was great. The movie looked great, too (though, Pixar - duh). There were plenty of really great action sequences that made me quite happy (particularly the opening sequence with Finn McMissile). The only issue this movie has (that was, I think, inevitable) is the volume of Mater scenes. You will either tolerate/enjoy the character, or you will completely detest him. If it's the latter, any enjoyment of the film is hampered quite a bit. I personally tolerated the annoying stuff - even laughed at some of the genuinely funny moments of his, which was surprising - so I wouldn't downgrade it for that, myself.

If I gave the first movie a 6/10, this movie deserves a good 8/10. Very nice improvement, I think.

Jake: You seem like a good guy, but I don't know if being pissed at the parents who brought their kids is okay.

They are not your kids, it is not your business. The kids are not being beaten, molested, or forced to watch extreme pornography, so there is no abuse, so you should stay out of their business.

Now, would I bring kids to 12:00 showing? Well, once they were 9 or 10 or 11 or so, maybe. Certainly not at age 0 or 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 or so. But that's just me having a different parenting style. It's not for me to say which is better, or tell other parents what to do.

Note: I am not actually a parent.

You seem like a cool guy, but those comments kind of bothered me.

In other news, I looked up Brave, it's definitely Scottish and looks very interesting. The only thing that really got me is that one of the characters is named "Lord MacGuffin." I can't help giggling about that.

I thought the first one was just a strictly average family movie, this one sounds like the same sort of deal. I mainly want to go see it to get a look at the teaser for that swords and sorcery flick they seem to be planning and the Toy Story short.

I'm a Pixar enthusiast myself and I still enjoyed Cars 2 no matter what you guys say. I was actually a little shocked that the sequel is darker than the previous one. But the kids I went to at a 4PM showing still enjoyed it.

Mater is actually the best thing about the two films and kids can relate to his personality which is why he was given a larger role in the sequel. But you guys are a little older than me, so I'm sure you still don't care about that. Shame because I was watching Mater's Tall Tales the other day and I can't help but wonder if it makes a great 'Brad & Jerrid' episode or spinoff show where Jerrid tells a wacky story to Brad about his past before he tells Brad that he was there with him too. If you guys did see Mater's Tall Tales, you wouldn't understand it or just didn't care. Still, Mater's Tall Tales is an hour and ten minutes shorter than Cars 2.

As for Bad Teacher, I think I'll give it a Blu-Ray rental.

Ugh... Children related Rage.... I hate, hate, HATE it when parents bring their extremely young children to movies! And the worst part is, those parents are SURPRISED when their kids act out during the movie and everyone around them are pissed off. Seriously, you give a hyper-active child sugar & soda, put them in a dark room where they have to sit still for 2 hours and it's at LEAST 4 hours AFTER a good bedtime! What do you think is going to happen? o_O

What's worst though, is when parents bring their BABIES to the movie. Not just little kids, but BABIES. When I saw a midnight showing of SUPER 8, a woman had her NEWBORN baby with her. I'm talking this kid was less than a month old. This was a baby who was so new, they they had it wrapped up in a blanket so tightly, it looked like a loaf of bread with a baby head. And of course, this movie had EXPLOSIONS. And what happens? The baby starts CRYING, but the woman for 10 minutes refuses to take the baby OUT of the theater while it cries. An usher had to tell her to leave.

Funny thing though, when I went to see X-Men: First Class, another couple tried to see it with their baby. Thankfully, the manager refused to let them into the theater, because they said the child was too young to be there.

Which is okay for the most part but when stubborness comes with stupidity, you get the next generation of trashy people.
And, because you asked: I would never take a 3 year old kid to a midnight screening. I wouldn't take my kids to the cinema at all until they are at least 6 years old. When they are fit for school, they are fit for the big screen and able to understand a movie.
I'm not saying that younger children are stupid, but the big hall, the darkness, the huge screen, the loud sound, bright flashes... no. Just no.
But seeing how many parents use the TV as a babysitter, they probably think it's A-okay.
