Stoned Gremlin Productions Presents: MIDNIGHT HEAT

"Midnight Heat" is a story of cops, hookers, killers, and pimps; all centered around one sleazy night in the late 1980's. A cocaine addicted homicide detective (Jake Norvell) is brought out of suspension in order to trail a local prostitute (Bianca Queen) who may become the next victim of The Scalper (Nick Foster), a serial killer who preys on the city's hookers.  Meanwhile, her mentally unstable pimp (Brad Jones) attempts to get out of the business while finding it harder to protect his girls from both the killer and from an abusive rival pimp (Buford Stowers). Filmed and completed in 2007.

My intro for the film:

Again, it's worth noting that we tried very hard to make to vocals better than they were on youtube. It is much better than it ever was on youtube, but of course, we still couldn't get it perfect. If you still have problems watching the movie, we sincerely apologize.

About to check this out Brad. I'll give a detailed critique later today, not that your frothing at the mouth to know the opinion of the peon masses. Haha.

Quick question: Does this have anything to do or was inspired by the Roger Watkins' porno also titled Midnight Heat? Roger's Corruption and American Babylon also come highly recommended.

i only have one nitpick though, there is a lot of background music and, while the majority of the time it does add a dramatic effect, it sometimes feels like theres some medly playing behind :L

but whatever, it was still a really entertaining film and im looking forward to the upcoming mini-series =)

    *SPOILERS*
This isn't the sort of movie I'd usually like, but I thought it was good. It was nice to see Brad in an antagonist role a bit more subtle than Steele in Hooker. I was genuinely shocked when he shot Sarah; I thought he'd just thrown the first girl into a sleeper hold for some reason. Unfortunately as my memory of 1987 is limited to the colour of my building blocks all I was thinking during most of this was 'This song was off the Vice City soundtrack'.
As for the sound issues, I didn't have a problem with it on earphones.
Also, I loved the shot on top of the carpark with the distant lightning off in the distance.

This one was pretty awesome! I see why you like it so much. It kinda reminds me of Argento's Tenebrae when the killer gets murdered halfway trough and the main character takes his place.

If I have anything to nitpick I'd just say the volume of the soundtrack is a bit too high in some spots and makes it a bit hard to hear the dialogue. Considering the budget though I don't think there's anything else wrong with it. It was competently acted with a kickass plot. Good job man.

Just watched the whole movie. I'm really impressed, it has a real atmosphere to it. There were one or two flaws here and there but it was better than most movies that make it to major theatres nowadays. Did you wait for that thunderstorm to happen or did you just take advantage of the situation to film the roof scene? That was awesome! Great movie, for it's budget I'd give it a 5/5

Pretty good movie actually, the sound mixing was lackluster though, at certain points I had to go back because dialouge got difficult to hear when you got music playing.

Also some of the acting wasnt that good, but most actors were decent.

Its still your best movie, except for Hooker with a heart of gold.

You should make more feature films, especially nowadays when there actually exists decent cheap cameras.

Dude, this was a fucking masterpiece!

I mean, it's not my normal cup of tea (game boys would be more that blend) but this movie was fucking awesome.

I must admit, after seeing the trailers and waiting years I had my own expectations of what the movie was going to be. After the first half hour, my expectations were shattered and you lost me for a bit. But then you got me back, I don't know how.

The soundtrack listing was freaking perfect, although I would've prefered that sequence you timed "You Belong to the City" to be longer to fit the song, I was expecting almost a longer chase sequence which felt a bit cut down.

Jake was fantastic, Bianca was fantastic.

But I HAVE to ask. Bianca's tattoo on her back of Tux the Penguin. I freaking lost it when I saw that tattoo. Was that a real tattoo or did you guys add that to her as a joke? I mean seriously, no prostitute in a million years will have a tattoo of the Linux Penguin, but it was great seeing that (and it is a movie, reality be damned).

I'm going to probably be watching this as much as I watched Game Boys and show it to as many people as I can.

I'm unlucky when it comes to 80's crime sleaze. Back, years ago when I didn't know that DVD's had region codes, I bought Vice Squad off of eBay. Naturally I was pumped to watch it when it arrived. After fumbling with trying to get the plastic wrap off, I finally got it off, only the DVD case wouldn't open, it had further plastic stick sealing at the case's top. Unfortunately, instead of just pulling clean off as they usually do, this one was stubborn and refused to come off, I only just managed to get it off without scarring the case. And when that was over I finally put the DVD in my player, so eager for the film...and then I was greeted with, WRONG REGION CODE. WILL NOT PLAY.
And most other 80's sleaze films, from Fear City to The Exterminator and Savage Streets aren't available via eBay (I don't know about anywhere else) in Region 4!

I notice you use the word cunt in each of your movies one time. Did you impose a one cunt limit?

This is good, not great. I would say I prefer Freak Out to Midnight Heat. One of the stand-out actors in my eyes is the first hooker that gets murdered, she sells her performance really well and has the atmosphere of being a whore...which is a hard compliment to give without sounding like a pig. Though a lot of other actors seemed kinda stiff. I would just advise filming from a different angle where it's easier to cut and edit if someone flubs a line or you can hear shit in the background or something. It's not easy to film a back and forth between two people in one take and have it hit all the right notes. There also needs to be a rise of intensity, some of the moments that were more intense seemed more played for laughs like the scene with Jake threatening the lady in the car. However don't think I'm saying this about your work now. I'm only judging Midnight Heat on its own merits and I think that's how all movies should be judged. I know this was made a while ago but I felt I should at least be honest. Keep doing your films though son, if nothing else the story keeps people invested. You have a knack for storytelling above all else.

I came into this expecting not to like it, since these sorts of movies never really interested me. Though you were in it and you gave it very high recommendation. Until now the only movie I'd seen you in was Paranoia (incredible work on that by the way!)

Though I was quite mistaken! That pretty boy you got to play the Scalper was great, he really sold the part. Donna, Rick, and Martin were all enjoyable characters, you could see layers and depth to their characters and the reasoning for Martin's break comes off as very well thought out, especially since you have other characters explaining the circumstances in details that doesn't sound like simple exposition.

And that rocking 80's soundtrack was great to bop my head and fingers t0 as the movie went on.

I think I'll watch a few of your other movies, since I can never get enough of your chosen cast.

I thought most of the acting was on par if not better than some of the other films. I agree about the music cues being a bit too telegraphed as some have said. Jake definitely has the machismo to pull off the role, and even though I like Freak Out more, I think I prefer him as a leading man over Nick. As always, Brad and Sarah with the goods when it comes to acting. All the whores were good come to think of it, and no this won't be my last time today applauding a whores performance.

I actually really liked this one, definitely more than Cheap (the only other of yours I have seen). Then again, you literally used THE best of the 80s on your soundtrack. You're pretty much making an argument for copyright. Without all the great works of these artists your movie would probably be hardly mediocre, as they contribute a huge deal to the style. I dug the lighting btw, despite what other people commented.

Soooo, Jake was basically playing himself then? ^^ Honestly, the three leads were great, although Bianca only got to shine towards the ending. The ending which I btw really didn't like. It felt very abrupt and the final "punchline" didn't work for me at all.

But the one scene on the rooftop was near perfect. Two disillusioned characters disgusted with the world and their lives discussing the most fucked up crimes society has to offer, the ironic contrast of Another Day in Paradise playing in the back and the thunderstorm brewing on the horizon. That was bloody perfect. There had to have been everything right for that shot.

So, when's the first TGWTG staff-member going to mockingly review one of your movies? Would definitely fit Phelous' or Lupa's shows...

Was he the inspiration for your character? I'm not going to comment on the filming, editing, or anything like that because I know you don't have the great equipment some others have to make great quality filming. It is really hard to a shot on shiteo grab your attention. Have you ever punched somone or got punched by somone on the face, Brad? Man, it hurts a bit, but that is it, no one is getting killed by a punch on a stage fight, worst case some bruises. And way to go! Punch on the face, some grappling slaming each other around breaking some furniture, making it real, wow, another movie. I think you have to know it is important since you are a director. The way the fight goes on this one looks not right... looks like it is a comedy, it is funny. best wishes

Felt that I should dash off a quick note of strong praise for this movie. It's of the type they just don't make anymore, if they ever did. I think what impressed me most was the tone. I've never seen a movie, big budget or otherwise, that really nailed the feel of the time period it was meant to be a tribute to. THIS was what Grind house should have been; atmospheric, dialog driven and a ton of fun to watch. Really as I've gotten older I've lost a lot of my love for movies, and more often than not find it difficult to watch almost any film in one sitting. I watched this one beginning to end and enjoyed every minute of it. I thoroughly enjoyed the layered characters. Rick managed to be both cliché and yet completely original as the heavily flawed antihero, and the villain was very textured with an almost noble -in his mind, anyway- agenda. I see the old axiom a villain must never consider himself to be a villain was used brilliantly here. I found the lead actress to be extremely talented in a role not quite as glamorous but perhaps even more difficult than that of Rick or Martin. And of course, like everyone else, I loved the soundtrack. Mainly I just wanted to say this is the most Ive enjoyed a movie in a long time and I wanted to say thank you. Ive always felt Hollywood could be greatly improved by just allowing a talented writer/director to pursue their vision unobstructed. This movie is proof.

Oh, and I loved Jake's last line, I don't see why the critisizm of it. If anything it was the shot of Bianca nodding sadly in answer I didn't particularly care for, but that's nit picking. I agree with the above post this flick puts Suburban Knights to shame... not to mention 95% of the big budget films I've seen of late. Would love to see you do another 80's homage if your ever so enclined... thanks again!

Enjoyed the movie. While produced on a very small budget, I can say the music kicks ass even if it does go on a little too long in some scenes. Judging from the credits, I didn't know this was going to be a movie about Martin. Other than that, I had a great time watching it. Story, characters, and pacing were all top notch.

Brad, do you happen to know the WoD universe? Somehow, thats what I was reminded of.

Another great movie Brad. I always imagine that I would frame the shots differently, but I could never write a story like you do. Good story, great atmosphere, decent acting, and above all else amazing soundtrack! It just needs to be lowered some on the dialog scenes. Still fantastic work. Now off to watch 'Cheap' for the third time.

    1) I'm a sucker for 80's movies and I think this was the perfect ode to them. Dark, seedy flicks with lots of city shots and sick characters are like crack to me.
2)Why does Nick always end up with the God-awful parts? Does he volunteer or is it sheer coincidence. (Pedofile to corpse to serial killer, really?!?)
3)Attempted to do a little 'Fuck' drinking game as my friends and I watched this. We were close to hammered in half an hour. Especially when it was finish drink when it was used more than twice in a sentence. Not a wise choice.
    4)Jake KILLED in this movie.

This is my first 80's style sleazy thriller, and oh man, was it awesome! Jake got the performance down perfectly, making me really wonder if he actually was on something while filming to sell it.
Besides the shot-on-shitteo filming, the cinematography was awesome, and the story of the film was attention-catching. You're a really good writer, Brad, and I hope you guys come out with more films in the future.
This was an hour and a half well-spent, and I'd rather pay to see your movies than Transformers any day.
Though I find myself wondering two things watching this:
    1) What Sarah did to you, since I've yet to see a movie where she doesn't die?
    2) How are you so good at playing psychos? You play them like they were real people you could meet in a dark alley some night; at least that's how it feels to me.

I really feel this is a strong movie and being a man of the same movie taste as yourself I feel that this style of movie needs to come back. Gritty, great characters, unhinged story, dark setting ect. You know.. a movie for fucking Christ Sake, So Brad do me a favor and just keep doing what you are doing and I will continue to be a fan . Also really soundtrack aranggment, the songs even seemed to take a whole new meanning noe that I think of it.

This is the first movie of yours that I've watched and I wasn't disappointed.
I will say that I couldn't really predict where the movie was going until about the last 20 minutes, which is refreshing.

I liked the sleaziness of the rival pimp, especially his dialogue about cheap cigars. Speaking of dialogue, probably the greatest bit of dialogue in terms of delivery and power were, oddly enough, The Scalper's last bits of dialogue before he died, when he was attempting to explain himself. His line about the hair was excellent. Nick really played him to perfection.

My favorite moment out of Martin was when he parted ways with the detective and, when the detective pieced everything together, Martin sort of turned back and gave this awesome villainous smirk to the camera.

The two major criticisms I have are that there aren't enough establishing shots. But that makes sense if you're trying to keep the illusion that the movie takes place in the 1980s. Too many establishing shots would expose too much of the modern city.

The other thing is that Martin's sister could have appeared, in some form, in Martin's earlier dream sequences. Maybe she did and I just missed it, but that seemed like a missed opportunity.

Otherwise, this was really enjoyable and the soundtrack kicked ass.

Absolutely loved it. It's mostly horror films that do this; when a recognizable (mostly pop) song is used, usually for the purposes of creepiness. This picture did the equivalence of that with so many of the great soundtrack selections; I can't listen 'You Belong to the City' without thinking of hookers crying or being killed. Fantastic work.
