Midnight Screenings: "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" and "The Change-Up"
Brad, Virtual Boyd, and Sarah go see "Rise of the Motion Capture Apes."
And Jillian and Jerrid try out to become the next Siskel & Ebert with "The Change-Up."
And Jillian and Jerrid try out to become the next Siskel & Ebert with "The Change-Up."

Holy shit Jillian is fucking PISSED. This is both hilarious and terrifying. Oh man, I better never take a girl to watch The Change Up EVER.

Did not think Change Up review would surpass the Smurfs one... It took 2 minutes and it did.

Interesting thoughts. I was surprised Brad liked it at all with all of the CG. But really I just can't get over you guys referring to the apes as "monkeys".
Reply to this
I always thought that the new Apes movie was more or less inspired by 1972's Conquest of the Planet of the Apes than the 1968 original. Judging by the good reviews it's been getting, it definitely succeeds.
And as Cornelius once said in Escape from the Planet of the Apes, please do not refer to apes as monkeys because it's offensive.
Reply to this
I tried very very hard to say the right terms in this review, since, go figure, nitpickers like my site =) But it's really easy to just instinctively "monkeys."

Wow, I thought there will be blood. Seriously, I was scared for Jarrid. I haven't seen this much hostility in any of the previous reviews.
Reply to this
Yeah, The Change-Up was a little uncomfortable to watch. A little too much real life tension seemed to be coming through. I felt kind of bad for Jerrid.
Reply to this
Got to agree with you on that one, the arguing was a little too real at the beginning and was uncomfotable. Jillian alternated between looking like she wanted to kill Jerrid, or she wanted to cry.
Although even if this The Change Up isn't very good, it sure isn't even a pimple on the ass of Zookeeper or Smurfs or Priest or any of the other bad movies this summer.
One thing I did notice. Maybe it was just the shadows, but Jillians face looked a little thinner. Has she lost weight?
P.S. The hate for Bayformers, and the love for the animated Transformers movie, YOU ROCK MRS. SNOB!

Jillian needs to be angry more, its amazing!

Both those movies sound incredibly boring and lame. Sequels and remakes have been done to death (the "body-changeover" plot has been done seemingly hundreds of times, and they STILL haven't got it right [ie. pervy fat guy played by Dennis Franz switches bodies with hot supermodel chick - who the fuck wants to see it with Judge Reinhold/Fred Savage or whatever?]). "Planet of the Apes" has been utterly done to death, and like most other franchises, the only movie worth anything at all is the first one. Even if you may have liked any of the sequels, could you call any of them a classic? You can't beat Charlton Heston in that role, or that great ending. I really thought Tim Burton's crapfest would have been the final nail in the PotA coffin.

Rise is a movie I'm ooking forward to seeing but yeah the apes looked fake in the trailers but I'm used to shitty CGI fromt he SyFy channel so no whoop anymore!
Did the apes talk in this or were they mute threw out?
I demand more Jerrid and Jillian reviews thy're perfect! The happy man-child and the angry woman looking for meaning in a movie without any! The Chang-Up holds no interst for me as I hate body switch films.. well I liked Face of but that wasn't as stupis as Freaky Friday and the like!
Reply to this
LOL, it's true, watching endless SyFy shit from the Asylum and these new Corman films, and whatever else, this CGI seems really good.
I still prefer real effects to CGI, and in many ways, bad CGI is "better" than good CGI, in that, bad CGI has "charm" like Plan 9 and whatnot, and good CGI just seems like an excuse for real life effects.

Wow. I can see what people are saying about the tension in "The Change-Up" video, holy Christ. Still funny, but wow.
Reply to this
The tension is high. Like dinner with my parents on my 18th Birthday...when they were in the middle of a divorce. A minute in and I'm worried that the fists will fly.
"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" looks alright. I just don't like the anti-animal testing message I'm getting from it. If the monkeys (or whatever you want to call them) are that intelligent, then I would be against testing. In the real world, they aren't, so the message isn't that strong.
Good reviews as always. Nice to see Jake is taking a break. Hope he regains his sanity! Treat him to a nice movie now and then (if there are any left)

Terrible reviews no Priest references.

The Change-up review was kinda awkward. I'm siding with Jerrid here. I don't think she could have known if he was laughing at some things because he thought they were well done jokes or if it was really cheesy.
I like Jillian but I think she was being pretty unreasonable to Jerrid.
Reply to this
I dunno, I agree with Jillian. You can tell the difference between someone laughing ironically or dismissively and someone genuinely laughing at something they find funny. She did seem very hostile toward Jared here but, hey, she was in a bad mood and a woman in a bad mood is nothing to mess with!
Reply to this
I can imagine them sitting in the theater, Jarred would find something funny and start cackling away and Jillian would be sitting there like Sideshow bob (she would find it asinine) . Every time that this happend her "hate" grew in magnitude, and then anything he did like "slurp his drink" only added fuel to her fire, you can see from the number of ticks that this happend alot. Until she finally got out of the theater and exploded like a volcano.

I'm pretty sure Olivia Wilde's CGI nipples were in the out-of-focus side-boob shot when your eyes are focused on Ryan Reynolds' face anyway. There IS a bit of nipple poking out there.
But I'm never watching that piece of shit movie again, so who knows?

No, they're not really like this. We're all best friends in real life.

They're best friends in real life? Bullshit. Jilllian had anger toward Jerrid. And not because of any bad movie. "I knew he was gonna slurp his drink!" "Quit acting like you thought it was just okay! I marked the number of times you laughed" She seemed squicked out when Jerrid touched her at the end.
Brad I love your shows and I think you are very talented. But you're a dick. You would make your good friend and your wife have to sit and work in close quarters even though they hate one another's guts? aNd you'd do that for entertainment?

You must be terribly lacking in social skills to not realize that a lot of people just communicate in that way. Some of us "argue" and swear like drunken sailors but at the end of the day, it's all in good and fun. And besides, the movie sucked donkey balls.
Oh, and how classy of you to call out Brad like that and be presumptuous over how people you don't even know in real life feel about each other (something you couldn't possibly know). Douche.
Reply to this
This was hammed up for the video. Jerrid lives right above us, we're all best friends; we do videos for the site all the time. You really think I'd put up with that in real life if they hated eachother like that? Or that we could live in such a close vicinity? But then again, you apparently know my wife and best friends better than I do. I had no idea.
Reply to this
I'm sure you're right, Brad. You know them better than any of us. But you have to understand, that was some scary shit right there. I thought she was either going to punch Jerrid out or was going to just get up and walk out of the car and say fuck it to the review. You say she was "hamming it up", but that's not the perception we took from the video. Now I don't want you to think that I am trying to tell you that you should control Jill or how you should do your videos, I'm not. I'm just saying that was a little extreme for the majority of us.
Reply to this
I don't know J&J better than you do but that was REAL annoyance and displeasure w/Jillian coming from Jerrid's face. (He isn't THAT good of an actor) And Jillian's a good actress (she was very good in 'Hooker w/Heart') but I'm gonna go with 'real anger'for $3000 Alex. (And when I say anger I mean toward JERRID not the movie..even though she seemed pissed by that too. But seemed more annoyed that HE enjoyed it. like a real married couple.)
Reply to this
I've already told the truth about this video several times on this site. Don't call me a fucking liar.
Reply to this
Now lets all calm down here, not everyone understands that even in a very well structured relationship people argue all the time. Jillian may have sincerely been annoyed with Jerrid but that doesn't mean she would hate him or be legitamitly angry for likeing the film, we all like different things and I doubt that even Jillian and Brad like all the same movies (in fact I'm sure they don't and can site videos where they openly disagree) so yeah regardless its just a movie. Jerrid didn't steal Jillian's first born and eat it so any speculation about the video is absolutely irrelevant.

Brad, I have to disagree and agree with you on the use of CG in movies. There's plenty of times it can be over used or used poorly but there's also times where it can be used effectively and very well. Now, I've not seen this movie yet but from what I've seen and heard it seems like it was done well and correctly. To bang on it just because it's CGI is sort of silly as CGI is no better or worse a special effect to use than stop-motion, forced perspective, or any humans in makeup. (Though I agree the Burton POTA did the makeup well.) But only with CGI can you get the look, gait, and anatomy of real apes (which these are supposed to be in this movie, not the "evolved" ones seen in movies that take place later in the continuity/events.) Using real apes would be difficult if not impossible to do. Poorly done CGI or CGI done for no good reason whatsoever should be railed on (see "Blarp" in the Lost in Space movie, or Mr. Popper's Penguins for a more recent example), the CGI use in POTA should be lauded. There's no way using anything but CGI could a moviemaker get the look or mannerisms he wanted. Now, granted, maybe the apes you mention in the zoo could've been real ones but as Sarah says they were likely CGI too for visual consistency. Love these reviews, guys, keep them up!

I don't think Brad is 100% anti-CGI, I remember him saying he thought the CGI in Cloverfield looked good in one of the Radiodrome episodes. I'd say he's about 99% =)
Reply to this
Personally, I find a lot of CGI takes me out of a movie because it often does not look like it exists with the live action. It usually reminds me of animated drawings like those scenes in the Bela Lugosi Dracula where he turns into a bat or the axe throwing scene from Silent Madness.
Also there's just something about the feel of physical special effects, make-up and the idea of making things that is. to some of us innately more impressive. than sitting in front of a monitor. And, obviously, CGI gore is just pitiful.

Jesus Christ, I though Jillian was going for fucking kill Jerrid in there. Holy shit, what happened in that theater that caused THAT?
I pretty much expected RotPotA to be an average movie, which it seems like it was. I don't plan on seeing it though, since I'd be WAY too preoccupied during the climax. I would have to basically tie myself down and duct tape my mouth to keep from standing up and shouting "SHOOT THE FUCKING APES. SHOOT THEM IN THE FACE. FIRE A GOD DAMNED HOLLOW POINT INTO THEIR POORLY RENDERED MUGS!"
Change up looks like straight shit, and I'd probably end up exactly like Jillian if I went to see it. I swear I though she was going to fucking strangle Jerrid when he went in to hug her.
I really want to see Jillian do a show now. She and Jake could go see bad movies together and then rant together about them!

I think the Change-Up video may have been hammed up just a bit for the review. Neither of them have ever been like that in other vlogs.

Okay, for one the first interview was awesome and characterized exactly how I felt about it.
I seriously hope Jillian posts a video on here explaining her attitude on the second video.
I didn't find the second video enjoyable at all because unlike Jake who obviously had a comedic vibe to his madness, Jillian seemed seriously pissed and upset.
I wanna know what Jarred did. Its like that scene in "King Kong Lives" where Kong eats the guy. The second video was too harsh for comfort.

Odd that Jillian and Brad get along so well with such different taste in movies and what you find acceptable.

I find it funny how you guys criticize the asshole at the end. That guy, if ever there was what TVTropes called a "designated villain", was one.
Sure, the movie tries to make us hate him, and most people do, but seriously, look at his crimes:
1. Worrying about a wild animal hurting his children?
(note: he does not know Caesar is smart/kind, he seems like an escaped beast to him, and a moonkey can kill children)
2. Getting upset over having his car attempted to be stolen?
(sure, it was stolen by someone out of his mind, but still, look from his perspective)
I am probably in the minority in that I sympathize with that guy
Reply to this
The guy was a little OTT, though. Him attacking Caesar when protecting the kid I might grant you, but the car was just way over the top. The confused, obviously out of his mind, old man simply drove the car backwards and forwards a few times. Certainly it put some dents in it, crumpled the bumpers or hood a bit, but the guy comes storming out and yelling about his car being "wrecked" and saying "how am I going to get to work?!" when the car is still perfectly drivable and not at all wrecked. Insurance would repair any damages to it and, come on, the guy did leave the car outside with the door open and with the keys in it.
Reply to this
More like the guy is a "designated jinx"
First, his kid's bicycle is almost stolen by a monkey. (Yes, I know Caesar is an ape and not a monkey, but in designated jinx's mind, Caesar is a monkey)
Second, he gets his car taken for the worlds shortest joyride when John Lithgow shows us scenes from the new Grand Theft Auto Metamucil.
Third, he gets his finger BIT OFF by Caesar!
Fourth, he has some even unluckier person sneeze blood on him.
Fifth, he ends up being Patient Zero for the newest strain of ebola that will kill off humanity.

I will probably go see rise of the planet of the apes considering I did like the original planet of the apes.
I seriously thought Jillian was going to start strangling Jerrid at one point which made me laugh especially considering that when he was talking about face off he totally forgot Nic Cage {how could you forget nic cage of all people}. I think I would end up agreeing with Jillian about The Change-Up since I personally probably wouldn't find it funny. I don't mind raunchy comedies sometimes but that just sounded so stupid. One line kind of just summed up that movie for me "the kid shits in his mouth" and now I know that is one movie I will be skipping over.
Loved the reviews and I can't wait for the next one. Also I have to agree you need to send Jillian and Jerrid into more movies together although Jerrid may be in quite a bit of danger.

On the CGI nipples: Yes, I agree, SHOW THE NUDITY.
If the actress is not comfortable with it, then FIRE THEM. THEY ARE NOT WELCOME.
Linday Lohan in Machete: FIRE HER!! FAKE NUDITY = FIRED!! Many real actresses and porn actresses would have gladly taken the part, and for less money!!
Elisha Cuthbert in the GIRL NEXT DOOR (comedy film, not the Jack Ketchum adaptation, a great movie) = FIRED!! FIRE HER!! FUCK HER!! They are other hot girls, who would not have demaned no nudity!!
If I was a director, and I wrote nudity into a part, I would have no compormise.

Except for the fact that women would have a serious disadvantage in terms of getting roles in movies. Actresses are almost always pressed to do nudity while men almost never have to. Not exactly fair. Not that I'm against nudity in film but it's going to be DEMANDED, no ifs, and, or buts about it, it should go both ways.

Are you kidding me? Just about every single last male actor at least every good looking ones, has at one time or another showed off his bare chest or their ass or their legs. Women get to wine about not doing it, and getting a CGI or a real life nude double.
It's the women who don't have to do nudity, not the men.

I don't know, after watching several of these movie reviews with Jerrid, he always seemed like someone with pretty terrible criticisms compared to the other Midnight Reviewers (The X-Men: First Class pops immediately to mind, when he was comparing Magneto to Wolverine, I also thought he missed a lot in his critique of Kung-Fu Panda). I love that she counted how many times he laughed in the movie and then used it against him, I could not stop laughing at that part. Jillian, great work taking Jerrid to town.

CG apes can react at the moment you need them to, real apes might fight and PETA would be on set, bullshit like that you don't need.
Reply to this
Well, I disagree highly and strongly.
No, you don't need those PETA motherfucker cunt bitches on your set, but fuck them. This movie proudly has some "PETA no animals used or harmed" seal of approval. That's a fucking embarassment. If I made a movie, I would not accept the award even if I got it accidentally (i.e., no animals in the movie anyways). I fucking hate PETA, I don't force you, or even try to force you, to eat meat, or wear fur, or hunt, stop trying to make me stop doing those things, I'll do what I want, you do what you want.
So, I think that PETA approving of your movie and not being on set, is actually a bad thing. I'd use real monkeys, and try and scare off the PETA fuckwads, what can they do? They aren't government, they're just crazy ass motherfucking cunthole cunt pussy lips bitches. Kick them off the set, and tell them to fuck themselves in their fat fucking asses and dirty fucking cuntholes.
Fuck PETA, if I ever made a movie with animals, I would use real ones. I would not be outright cruel (because no one _supports_ cruelty to animals, really, it's just PETA goes infinitely too far in the other direction), but I would certainly not try and reach the standards of PETA. Fuck them.
As for the "real apes might fight" thing, true, but that's almost part of the charm of real animals. Besides, that amounts to laziness. As in, "real shit might not be perfect, so I'll lazily just fake it". That is not an acceptable way to make a movie.
Use real apes, it'd be awesome.
It's like explosions. Sure, you make a bullshit CGI Michael Bay explosion, and have it do whatever you want, but it's just not the same as real life explosion.

This is not an Anime or Slap-stick cartoons (which I dislike but that's another discussion). It doesn't sound like its super bad, but I think it would be worth waiting until it hits DVD later in the year, that's for sure.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was the biggest waste of movie-going/writing/directing time I have ever seen in my life. It is stunning how well recommended/accepted this stupid, annoying, PG-13 addled film is. I won't argue for the sake of remaking/reinventing (aka: no originality) or the wretched CGi, but how embarrassing it is that movies like Splice and Project X were Oscar material over this dunce of a goddamn movie. If there was an ounce of competence inserted into this movie's characters, dialogue or scenarios, the movie would cease to exist. The Human Flu and its epilogue would've been solved without even a phone call, the housing of a test subject for personal emotionally invested research would've been fixed, the one animal shelter worker being evil would've been patched, the innocence of keeping a chimpanzee for years in close captivity would've been destroyed within a month, the SFPD vs. 'smart' apes would have been resolved (in about three minutes) and the cliché 'Board Meeting/Research Progress Overview Crashed by Astray Subject' scene would have been scrapped. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a humiliation to the word 'entertainment.'

I don't care how many positive reviews for that pile of shit Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
They missed the entire point of the original's anti-war message, and mythology. The original had it so the humans eradication themselves because of war, hate and greed with a good mixture of atomic weapons, allowing apes to eventually evolve over time.
I know it's technically a reboot, but it's still stupid, and the plot device of a virus, which wasn't even germ warfare related (so it still could have been an irony that we invented this virus for war) was mis-placed and sends out a stupid message that we shouldn't be looking for cures for alzheimer's disease.
Anyway the trailer looked bad, the CG looks bad, and the story sounds awful.

I fear that Jillian's outburst at poor defenseless Jerrid is merely the tip of the iceberg, an Iceberg that will one day engulf the entire world in a flaming sea of horror.
Woe and thrice woe. The end is nigh.

OK. Jillian. Chill. Please. If Jillian doesn't explain herself for her attitude in that 2nd video, Brad lost a viewer. Jillian please say you were acting.

That was some magical rhythm between Jillian and Jerrid. Not sure if I'm pulling a Jerrid myself by saying this but I think that argument was really funny.
What we must remember though is the real villain of this video was "The Change-Up" for no doubt being completely awful. Jerrid is just an awesome easy to please guy and his kick ass personality blinded him to complete shit. Jillian doesn't have that strength to believe in humanity so faithfully as to believe there's beauty in the most awful of things. I don't think many of us do have that strength and that's what makes Jerrid beautiful.

The "Change Up" review was a bit awkward to watch; cause it felt like there was more going on there than just disagreement over the movie.
As for Jillian's reaction: Come on. Not saying every one does, but a lot of us get a good laugh out of "rage" reviews. Smurfs, Transformers DOTM, for example. So I can't honestly say that Jillian's review was anymore over the top (or that much more so) than some of the others. And I can't see how we can single her out to call her on it.
Just my two-cents.
Like I said at the start, it felt off cause it didn't feel like it was just about the movie. so in that way it felt different and a bit uneasy to watch.
Anyway: Surprised about "Rise...", I was expecting it to be a complete cluster-f**k, so I'll be checking it out when i get a chance. And Jillian props for the 80s animated TF movie love.
Reply to this
I don't remember anyone getting hostile at another reviewer in the Smurfs review or any review so far. Any rants were directed entirely at the movie, not at the person they saw the movie with. Even at that, the rants were done in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek manner. Jillian was glaring at Jerrid at the very beginning of the video, told him to start, interuprted him, and then basically attacked the poor guy for thirty minutes. The whole review ended with her complaining that Jerrid bought a drink.
Whatever the reason was, Jillian was obviously upset. If it were a skit, I would chalk it up to acting but these are candid reviews. I wouldn't even call it "hamming it up" because it was in no way funny. We've seen Jillian make reviews for movies she hated in the past and it was never this hateful and she never projected her anger at other people.
Reply to this
I didn't get a hostile vibe. More of a annoyed or pissed off vibe. And she didn't complain he had a drink, but that she knew he would and he did make noise slurping it all through the movie-- which I would have looked over at him and told him to knock it off.
Compared to the other rant-vlogs she was a bit more angry but not by much-- IMO. Your mileage may vary.

That's not true at all. Jake has yelled at Jerrid several times in these videos. On more than one occasion he has told him to go fuck himself, and he was all over Jerrid's case in the X-Men video.
Reply to this
None of them, a true hostility. Always with humor. Nothing like Jillian this time.
Reply to this
Was it Gillian's time of the month or something? I understand being pissed at a movie, but what's got that to do with counting how often a guy laughs at the movie and getting pissed at him for?
Chill.
Reply to this
Counting how many time he laughed? I'd probably do something like that; especially if it was (like) every other joke or scene. That's why I rarely see comedies in theaters: there's always some one that laughs at everything, through the whole movie, and I end up next to them. It tends to annoy me.

I thought the change up review was hilarious. Definitely reminded me of those reviews when Ebert would give a movie thumbs up and Siskel would look at him like he was the dumbest person on the face of the Earth.
Reply to this
Siskel and Ebert did have some arguments over the worth of a movie and they had some doozies but never to the level of hostility as in that change up review. I never felt like Siskel was about to put the smackdown on Ebert after a taping of 'At The Movies'...And I never felt as uncomfortable during a Siskel and Ebert disagreement as I did that 'Change Up' review.
Reply to this
You know in thinking about this a bit more...We viewers may be reacting in a sexist way to this. If Boyd Brad or Jake had the same kind of 'hostile' review with Jerrid we wouldn't think much of it other than it's just "the guys fucking around" and laugh at it.
And Jerrid- much as I enjoy his presence in these videos- does seem a bit like the oblivious-to-the-point of annoying friend. Slurping his drink being unaware that he is annoying the PERSON SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO HIM. I mean this is the guy who didn't notice that a couple were behind him fucking in a virtually empty theater.

Please tell me you had a review show on public access or the radio and THAT is the reason you watched that movie.)

Did Jillian have an axe to grind against Jerrid going into this film or what? I turned off her review less than 10 minutes in because she's just grotesque to him.
There might be something else here. If not, I feel bad for Brad. Just wow.

I have seen every review posted on this site, some of them several times. I sat through corpsefucking, Salo, killing children, masturbating beds and talking vaginas. Relax guys, Jillian's not that angry or hostile in real life =) She just wanted to put on a show for the video. Listen to her in other debate videos like when she and Benzaie talked about "Sucker Punch" and you'll see she's nothing like this. I wouldn't have married her if she was that angry of a person. On the way home we were all laughing about the video. Her annoyance at the movie was real, but any hatred towards Jerrid wasn't.

As i have said before, send them off to Hollywood, thats some serious acting there =)

Okay, I'll give you the benefit of a doubt. As I've said before. You know them personally, we don't. All we, your fans, ask is that the tone come down a bit because that was unenjoyable for a lot of us to watch. I wanted to turn off the video myself, but I forced my way through to see if the hate would calm down. It did, but not nearly enough. I will say that Jill is one hell of an actress cause I really thought she was fucking pissed and was going to kill Jerrid or walk out of the shoot. Again, all I can ask is to tone it down a bit. Not so much a slam fest next time. Just a disagreeable review if you please. : )

So...it's ok when Jake yells at Jerrid for laughs in the "X-Men" video, or when they harp on eachother in the "Harry Potter" video, and all the times Jake gave Jerrid shit about why he wasn't at "The Zookeeper," but it's not ok when Jillian does the same thing. That's a double standard.
Reply to this
Bullshit. They were harping indeed, saying things in jest, not serious. Plus they were making fun of each other's opinions. Jillian showed not a single hint of any such things; she was ffing counting the amount of times he laughed and how he laughed as opposed to paying attention to the movie.
You can see the difference in that the targets previously never defended themselves, they were just laughing along. Jerrid, this time however, found he needed to stick up for himself to the point of telling Jillian to fuck off. The tones and the events are entirely different, and they've got nothing to do with her gender.
Reply to this
I'm with you....that's exactly what's been bugging me about this whole thing. When the guys do it, it's great vid drama, but when Jilly does it....here come the fucking PMS jokes--It's condescending and just plain HORSESHIT!!!
Reply to this
Once again, it's got nothing to do with Jillian being a woman, it's got to do with the way it was done and the tone.
For one thing, Jillian is more busy wit Jerrid than the ffing moving; accusing Jerrid of lying.
Not once, between the guys, was there a single hint of them attacking each other. The best you get, is what Jake was going to do in jest to Jerrid for not being at the Smurfs.
Jillian was just pure venom, there wasn't a single hint at stuff being played up, in fact I never once though at any screening any of it was played up.
In fact, if it's played up, all of it severely diminishes.

Jerrid did go see 'Zookeeper'. He saw every POS movie this summer except for Smurfs.

What I'm gathering from a lot of these comments is that it's ok when a guy is hostile in these videos, but as soon as a woman does, she's a harpie and a bitch.
Reply to this
Bullshit. It's got nothing to do with her being a woman, it's got to do with her tone and what actually happened. Previous "hostility" toward each other when it was two men there was not a single time when they were serious; which you can see with the target never defending himself. Jillian was being so negative without a single hint of humor that Jerrid felt he had to defend himself and had to tell Jillian to f off.
It's got nothing to do with her gender.

Surprising to find all these comments discussing Jillian. She's always come off as stiff and unpleasant, from my view. Be it in the comments, or often in videos. Don't want to knock Jillian too much, for out of the respect I have for Brad, but she does often provide a certain sense negativity. Not in a comical sarcastic way, or playful anger. Just simply.... annoying.

You say you respect Brad but you come on his website and make remarks about his wife being "stiff and unpleasant"?
Epic fail.
Reply to this
No, you have to be fair about this. This is a website where people put themselves out to an audience, whether their acting or expressing their options therefor someone coming to the website and saying they don't care for one of the commentators is not "Epic Fail" or a personal attack. It's like saying I find Snooki or Paris Hilton annoying, it's not an attack on the person but a criticism of the character the put forth to the audience. By the way I like Jillian her taste in humor is more conservative than mine but I still like her, loved the Sucker Punch review and wish she'd tear Transformers a new one but I found this to be too far over the top. As Brad has said, she was acting but I think it came a crossed as too nasty to Jerrid. Not everyone's going to like her just like not everyone's going to like Jake or Jerrid, they have a right to express that.

Oh Jillian, I was right there with you when you mentioned the Transformers movie... After I saw TF3, I went home, grabbed most cherished TF toy (big time collector here), cried myself to sleep and tried real hard to forget the images of my childhood getting all its orifices brutally raped. The only good thing to have come out of the movie franchises is the toys, which I'll admit are pretty awesome designs...

Aw Jillian, I know what it's like to be that pissed at a movie when nobody else is. Not fun.
Also, she wasn't any more aggressive than Jake or even Brad can get. It's just a contrast between Jillian's normal personality that we see on-screen. And Jerrid doesn't strike me as very aggressive, so it just seemed more exaggerated.

I just got back from seeing POTA and thought it was pretty good, didn't mind the CGI and I actually didn't mind the line reference ("Get your hands off me...") nor did it I think it undercut the following event which I still found powerful.
On the front you pointed out about the virus infecting Franco, and other humans, I suspect it's possible a percentage of the population could be naturally immune from the airborne virus. If the events of this movie are to follow into the original movie(s) some humans have to survive. As for the movie's events conflicting with the "history" presented in the other POTA movies, eh. Those I feel are best forgotten only the first movie should be truly revered. And I agree the mid-credit sequence was odd. I mean, what are most people usually doing right after a movie ends? Then all of the sudden when everyone is crowding out of the theater the movie comes back on?! What were they thinking? I think when the scene goes to black with Caesar looking at San Fran it could've been black for a moment, opened to the pilot guy bleeding and then over the end-credits scene show the virus spreading.

What the hell? She was great! That was Snob-level angry reviewing right there. I suppose you guys think Jerrid and Jake really tried to kill each other too.
As for the other videos where people say they find her "stiff and unpleasant," well, she's playing the straight man (errr, woman) for comedy. She can be as goofy as the rest of the crew, just look at "Softly from Cable."

I dont want to diss Jillian.
If she was being sincere then Im sure she was just in a bad mood.
But her anger was not entertaining, it was just mean spirited and unpleasant.
I like angry reviews, but angry reviews arent entertaining simply because they are angry. Angry reviews are entertaining because the reviewer knows how to direct the anger, and and make it funny.
Its not funny when you beat down another person with that anger.
If jillian was just playing it up for the camera, it was hard to tell. I didnt get the impression that it was a joke, so that just made it more uncomfortable.
Again, I dont want to sound like im coming down too hard on Jillian. Anyone can overreact. It's kind of unfortunate that her instance of overreacting was caught on video and put on the internet.
Reply to this
Indeed. It would have been entertaining if she'd seemed angry at the movie, possibly with humorous comments about its failing points. Instead she was virtually pounding her fists on Jerrid's chest, screaming 'I hate you, I hate you, I hate you'.
As a movie acting effort, her performance would have been golden. In what was supposed to have been a funny review about two people disagreeing about a movie, it was just uncomfortable.

So when Siskel & Ebert engaged in anger and personal attacks it was ok? Suddenly when it involves Jillian, it's like two people yelling at eachother about a movie is some kind of newly discovered phenomenon. This is rampant sexism gone wild.
Reply to this
No one said it was ok when S&E did it. Besides, Siskel & Ebert are two of the most overrated people ever. Yeah, I said it. Of course, on a site whose primary function is to mock people like Ebert, my opinion should hardly be surprising (of course, Brad might mock Ebert with "love" and "respect"; but I don't like him).
As for "rampant sexism gone wild": typical feminist reaction to anything: "It's Sexist!" Something that has NOTHING to do with gender or sexism, and yet the feminists still call foul.
"My favorite color is green." I say. "That's sexist!" bellows the feminist.

Yo, John Connor; watch the movie before you bash it.
I really loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes. They way it followed Caesar's story through visuals and little dialogue was so well done. I'll agree that "the line" was pretty damn stupid, but it was the only element that I really found to be that bad.

I think all this shock and horror (sans the sexist "time of the month" stuff) should go on her acting resume. That was brilliant.
If you guys don't do a video where you flat out murder each other at the end of this summer, then I will still probably watch it because I really don't like confrontation...
Brad, I love how part way through you cut in clearly having held back laughing through the entire Jillian rant. It was hilarious! I am with others on one count. The banter came across like a married couple of 40 years.
I differ on CGI. As far as I'm concerned, nothing on that screen is real, it's a projection of light, it just matters that it's convincing. However, even I have limits. CG vomit? CG poo? CG milk? CG nipples? Why? How could that possibly have been easier than just using some actual liquids, and actual breasts (or just the typical camera angle hiding them)? CG is getting better all the time, and eventually we're going to leave the uncanny valley, at which point Brad won't know what's pissing him off until he sees "the making of" special for a movie. Until that day though, other things can be done.
That said, some movie experiences could only have been done convincingly with CG effects. I can't imagine Jurassic Park's massive dinosaurs with conventional animatronics. That movie's sweeping views of huge dinosaurs could only be done effectively with CG. The close up stuff kept the robotics though.

Angry Women make me uncomfortable and confused, oh noes! It's biologically impossible for Wimmen to act angry in order to be funny! Jillian is just an Angry Woman. Doesn't she know that comedy is for men, and so she can't be offended? And that men can totally complain about funny shit made for girls? That's legit man anger right there. As legit as most of these comments! Actually, they are mostly from dudes disappointed and bitter that there's no cleavage this time. ANGRY WOMAN.

The change up review was just unpleasant to watch. It seems like Jillian honestly dislikes Jerrid. There was a comment she made in the smerf review about him not having balls and now this. WOW. Constantly amuses me to see all these comments attacking Jillian and they never bother to read Brad's comments about what happened or take his word for it. I got to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes today and it was awesome I thought it was pretty damned good. It was pretty depressing in parts. The whole thing with the guy's dad having Alzheimer's was really sad to me. And that neighbor guy deserved to get his ass kicked and his finger bitten off. Who beats up on an old man? Especially one known to have a disorder? Outside the dad, Franco's character, his girlfriend, the chimp handler from the company that died, and the one chimp handler dude that came off as being kind of slow there were really no likable character outside the Apes! My favorite character threw out the whole film beside Caesar was Maurice the signing Orangutan for some reason and the freaking big ass gorilla general. And, I'm glad to say that this movie has reached and surpassed $70 million mark at the box-office(it's budget was only $90 million) and this was it's 1st weekend.
I'm now curious though we got different trailers at our showing then ya'll've been getting and I'm curious of ya'll's thoughts on these movies.

On the front of Jillian. I liked the review, I found it funny and could tell Jillian was playing it over the top for the sake of "comedy." Just like Brad does, and just like Jake does. But people are all huffy and stuffy because a woman gets bit cross with a man? BS, gang. I do think that maybe a video explanation is needed from Brad, Jerrid and Jill as the explanations given in the threaded comments here are easily over looked. If this site had a more modern BBS system that explanation would be given in a better forum, these video discussion areas are hardly great places for discussion or explanation of things. Brad is assuring us that Jillian was acting. Which reassures me.
I am happy to know it wasn't sincere.
That being said, I still think the video was a step in the wrong direction. Intentional or not.
Let me say now that my comments are not about Jillian, as I acknowledge that she was just playing a role. My criticism is about the the way the video came across.
I think the main problem is that it came across so mean spirited. And we didnt know if it was sincere or not. We weren't exactly in on the joke.
Whether it was acting or not isnt the issue. The issue is that it was just plain uncomfortable to watch.
While I cant speak for everyone, my opinion is that the appeal of an "Angry Review" is that people can relate it the sentiment, and get behind it.
Like enjoying the therapy of a good scream without having to make the spectacle yourself. And anybody can get behind a rage directed towards a bad movie.
But this rage was directed towards Jerrid. And I cant get behind that. All of a sudden this turns the raging reviewer into an antagonist and turns Jerrid into a victimized protagonist.
So peoples natural reaction will be to side with Jerrid.
So the audience is made to witness this very uncomfortable drama, making us take sides, then it isnt until after the fact that we find out it was played up for the camera. The fact that we werent let in on it makes it feel like we were the victim of a practical joke or something.
The real question now is, what was the point? It wasnt comedic. It wasnt informative. It didnt amount to anything. I cant see how anyone can really be entertained by it.
Was it worth it?
I may be over-analyzing this, but Im just trying to explain my reaction.
Anyway, I've said my piece.
I still love Brads videos.

I'll be honest, going in to this not knowing Jillian is playing it up, it was generally uncomfortable. It was still funny, but the entire time it was just an uneasy experience.

Oh, and about the nipples. The reason they used CGI nipples is because originally when Wilde signed she specified no nudity (why? I don't know). So they used pasties and shot around them. However, after filming they saw they they had screwed up and caught the pasties on camera. So they used CGI to correct the issue. Would have been simpler for Wilde to just not use pasties in the first place, but that's her prerogative. It also might have been simpler to not use that bit of film, but having not seen it I don't know if it would have made for rough editing if they had cut it.

This movie really pissed Jillian off! Her hatred of it, combined with Jerrid's enjoyment just boiled into a shocking bit of loathing. I was also quite uncomfortable. In regard to that "New Year's Eve" movie, it's clearly a "sequel" to that Valentine's Day movie. Boo on both of those.

Siskel & Ebert engaged in anger and personal attacks all...the...time. And don't try to write it off that Gene and Roger were always joking, there are a number of episodes that showed pure anger. Now when Jillian does is, she's a queen harpie and a horrible person. The reaction to this video is blatant sexism and a huge double standard.

Yeah, because whenever a man disagrees with something a woman does, it's sexist, right?
I don't care for Siskel and Ebert's style, either.

Considering I'm Dutch and the only things I've seen of Siskel & Ebert are short clips here and there as part of other programs/videos - I wouldn't know whether they ever did something worthy enough for me to tell one or both of them to take a chill pill.
And as for sexism; I'm extremely anti-sexism; violently, without being actually violent opposed would be the term. I'm 125% pro-equality... but, that's the real equality. Not feminist's idea of equality meaning that a man is on his knees worshiping women because they are of course flawless, saintly goddesses.
If a woman does something worthy of negative critique, just like a man does something worthy of negative critique, both get the negative critique.
If you don't like it... well, I don't give a rat's ass.

But waht if the roles were switched? You'd be calling Jerrid a brute and a bully.

If he were saying the same things, with the same lack of humor, direct attacks on her, the answer is yes.

.... I don't think Jerrid and Jillian should do reviews together lol

I thought Jillian did a really good job in both Game Boys and Hooker, but wow! After seeing her in this review, and knowing that she put on a show, I'm convinced that she would make for a damn good actress! =)

And yes, both Jillian and Jerrid need to do reviews together more often. Especially if they both have different opinions.

So when Jake goes on a rampage about a movie he doesn't like, it's completely fine and not immature? Get over yourself. I didn't have a problem with her rant because I didn't think it was anything out of the ordinary on this site... plus it was funny.

Jake never directed it at fellow reviewers. Jillian did.
Also, people did jump to Jerrid's defense when the guys were interrupting him a few reviews back (forgot which one). No ladies were present in that one so we can all stop being pretentious about double standards.
As it stands, if this was an act despite no previous reviews being scripted in any way, then it simply was not funny.

That second review was goddamn hilarious. Just because it sounds like Jerrid and Jillian are the ones that are married.

...how exactly a Jillian Vs Jake fight discussion mutates into a sexism discussion?

I thought Jillian was making shit up with that "kids shitting in a dude's mouth" bit like Brad with the whole "sap off Sean Penn's dick" thing. I couldn't believe that actually happens.

Wow, my dislike for that woman grows even more. Feel sorry for Brad. All she needs is a Big Gulp cup in her hand.

I didn't realize you guys were playing roles in these reviews. I thought it was just you guys hanging out talking about the movie. You should clarify next time.

Not true. We're not playing roles in these reviews. The Change Up video was simply hammed up.

I am glad they didn't include any chimpanzee "actors" in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It would be awkward to watch a movie decrying animal abuse while watching imprisoned chimpanzees being forced to do unnatural things. Read this article from the Jane Goodall institute for more information: http://www.janegoodall.org/chimp-central-entertainment
Chimpanzees in the entertainment industry are horribly mistreated and maladjusted, and I am very grateful that they decided to go the CGI route. There is no reason to abuse animals unnecessarily for our entertainment. The movie wasn't being lazy, it was being kind.
Personally, I loved the heck out of this movie. It was a good revenge film and the visceral satisfaction of seeing the evil humans get their comeuppance was lovely.
Anyway, I hope you can read my comment and the article attached, and I hope you find it informative!
Love you, Brad!

Jillian is a bitch! i would never marry a girl that take a bad movie that serious

Listen friend,
Regardless of what you think of Jillian; This is Brad's house. You probably shouldn't call his wife names.
Not trying to ruffle feathers, but we are all mature adults, and should refrain from direct name calling.

I read halfway down this page, then got tired. People complain over the weirdest shit.
My whole thought on it while I was watching it was simply, "Man, I don't know if they will be able to send them to anymore movies together. Next time Jerrid laughs, they may end up finding him bound and gagged in the trunk of the car."

Im not a big fan of CG. But i do think that Planet of the Apes are of those few movies in which it worked quite well. And that is because they used motion capture with a good animal-actor such as andy serkis.
I am a big fan of the planet of the apes movies, so i am biased in this. But i still hold that planet of the apes was a movie in which the CG worked well.

Now I get it!

Brad, it's rare we disagree but we do on this one. I HATED Apes.

I think the part I love most about the reviews is actually in the Planet of the Apes one where you guys start talking about what it would've been like if Spader early in his career had been in this movie.
Completely lost it "Crash of the Planet of the Apes".

After hearing about this infamous review of The Change-Up through references in a couple of your later videos, I thought I'd check it out. I have not seen the movie myself, as it looked pretty awful, but I am not the critic here, so it doesn't matter. In all honesty, I actually really liked that review. "Scary shit," really? Brad, you already said it was hammed up for the video anyway, but even if it wasn't, I really enjoy how this was executed. Nothing should be uncomfortable about watching two people arguing on different sides about one topic. I personally found it quite funny at certain times, and it's nice to see that you and your friends aren't afraid of showing a little aggression in these reviews.
For those who did find this uncomfortable, I recommend watching Siskel & Ebert, as the tension between the two reached much higher levels than Jillian and Jarrid appeared to reach. Or even a political debate. And for those who felt that Jillian and Jarrid hated each other, I recommend growing up. I was watching Alvin and the Chipmunks (yes, the movie) with my friend Brandon a couple of months ago. He was laughing his ass off. I utterly loathed the movie. The results: difference in opinion. Zip-a-dee-do-da. Brad, keep these midnight screening reviews coming. They are simply delightful.

Oh, of course, when I quote, "scary shit," it is only directed towards the commentators overreacting to the video. I'm sure plenty of other viewers weren't as easily disturbed as others.
I suppose I should watch the Rise of the Planet of the Apes review too, while I am on this page. More money for Brad!

Great reviews, oh tell Jillian to watch the new Transformers Prime, its SO much better then The Bay films combine even though thats fairly obvious, but this series even though the Bots Robot forms look like the Bay movies and not simple like the G1, but I kind of like it, and the writing is good, the relationship with the human characters and the Autobots are as they should be, there's character development for both the Transformers and the human characters, and lastly the most important thing that the Bay films fail and do every damn time is that, this show does not doubt your intelligence, even though its a kids show.

What the hell is Jillian's problem... she has issues 0.0
Seriously... get help... therapy is the way to go... no joke lady.

How is Jillian a critic? She is so subjective. Talk about being biased, i think she is frustrated she is not a man and she is not capable of understanding this kind of humor.

Uh I'm guy and I understand the kind of humor the Change Up was going for. Admittingly I didn't think it was a bad movie and I actually did like Jason Bateman getting to break type by playing a different kind of character when he was portraying Ryan Renyolds, but that dosen't mean I thought she was wrong for disliking the movie. She admits to not even liking gross pratfall stupid humor like The Change Up had a lot of so I can understand her really hating it. You Steve just sound like you're being ignorant and sexist which isn't really cool when someone gives you a reason for why they didn't like a movie and you just write it off as "they're a woman so they don't get that kind of humor wah wah wah"
I decided to watch this again after it was mentioned how in Radiodrome that Jerrid and Jillian's relationship was more "played for laughs" here even though in reality they didn't really like each other and yeah, you can tell in this one they have problems with each other that aren't just an act. Espiecally Jerrid trying to "cuddle up" to Jillian at the end and her threathening him. Since you can tell she was doing it more then just a joking tone.
