There was another disc format that came out in the late 70's/early 80's called RCA Disc-O-Vision (no Disco Inferno jokes)
Apparently RCA's format used a disc which was more like a vinyl LP and used an actual record needle stylus instead of one read by a laser beam. Reply to this

Well you are partly right RCA did have a home video format in the late 70's early 80's it was called CED (Capacitance Electronic Disc) and it was very similar to a 12 vinyl album in both look and function. it was also a colossal failure and left the market in early 1984.
Disco-Vision was actually the name that MCA and Phillis had for laserDisc up until 1983 when Pioneer became a major share holder and changed the name to LaseerDisc/Laser-Vision. Yes Disco-Vision was a very blatant and cheap attempt to cash in on the whole "Disco" craze and that why Pioneer picked LaserDisc in the long run. Reply to this

It's a shame that CED didn't catch on better. Compared to how fragile laser discs are, CED is like a VHS. The sense the recorded media is protected in an external case. Reply to this

CED are not better then laser disc. From what I know laser disc are even better then dvds in alot of ways its just there price and size that killed them. CED broke ALOT and are a pain to watch. I have over 200 ceds and I love having them but if I move I am not sure I will be bringing all of them with me. Buts thats just me. If I could make all my ced's into laser discs I would in a heart beat. Also Criterion had alot of laser discs put out thats how they started. Reply to this

You are 100% correct. CED is dreadful when compared to LD, hell it's terrible when compared to VHS or Beta it's main competitors.CED's can only be played a few dozen times before they start to loose video and audio quality the players are also notorious for either not working (even when new) or trashing discs. Also LD's really aren't that fragile (no more than a DVD or a CD). Reply to this

you should check out the Laser Disc Database, they have possibly the worlds greats digital archive of LaserDiscs. They even archive the bar codes so if you're like me and have the bar code scanner app for your phone you can find the exact specs about the movie you are looking at. lddb.com Reply to this
