E.T. Week: Extra Terrestrial Visitors

E.T. comes to an end with "Extra Terrestrial Visitors."

...though you may know the movie better under a slightly different title.

The whole Rick "it stinks!" lip mismatch comes from the production; this flick was shot in Spain and in Spanish, though they try to hide that by using American food, english signs, and that photo of Reagan in the ranger shack. But you knew all that, Brad.

AWesome review as always but I'm a little bit disappointed... I thought there were gong to be 2 more episodes. And there are so many more ET knockoffs and porn parodies apparently!

Oh, well! I need to see this movie on it's own someday! Is there a DVD with both versions of it on it? That you know of!?

I haven't seen the episode of MST3K itself but I'll check You tube and see if it's been bootlegged onto there!

I do gotta admit I like the alien design here and effects looks like something you'd see in a Star Wars movie or a half assed TV show of the time!

I wonder if you could do what they did with this movie with other sci-fi/horror movies and by adding in a kid they could turn them into an ET or a Kid and his monster/alien friend!? Like Friday the 13th Part 4 The Friendly Chapter!
I don't know why but when I was thinking of this Joke I was reminded that I read some where they made a porno-parody of FT13TFC called Friday the 13th The Nude Chapter and I'm wondering if Brad here has heard of it and if he can find it would he review it!?

So long ET week you were the best of the Year outside the Summer Midnight Reviews!

As Brad said, it's because it was on MST3K. The bottom 100 isn't really a list of the worst movies, it's a list of the most notoriously bad movies. A movie needs 1500 votes to qualify for the bottom 100 list, so a movie needs to attract a lot of attention despite being bad, so it either needs to have a major theatrical release to begin with (like Baby Geniuses 2 or From Justin to Kelly) or it needs something like MST3K to propel it into infamy. But in both cases, the movies have to be at least reasonably watchable.

Curse of the Cannibal Confederates has a low enough rating to get on the bottom 100, but not enough people have rated it it, and I highly doubt people are going to be lining up to see it any time soon. It's not a Troll 2 kind of bad movie.

    Good review. And good week.

One thing I noticed when watching this movie for the MST3K episode was that the movie has some footage lifted from Space:1999 (in the review it came at the point where you made the Doctor Who joke) though something tells me I might be the only person to have noticed this. Someone please tell me I'm wrong!

And this week comes to an end with "Pod People" and all is right with the world.

I'm still suffering aftershocks of watching the "Nukie" review. "Pod People" is still a terribly put together movie, but it has some great laughable moments, ie. "Idiot Control Now", the stop motion scenes, the bad accents and bad dubbing etc. Not to mention having already seen the MST3K episode, I had already thoroughly enjoyed this movie with the help of Joel & The Bots.

Whereas "Nukie", well... FUCK THAT PIECE OF SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE WAS NOT ONE ENJOYABLE THING ABOUT THAT MOVIE! AND IT DIDN'T MAKE ANY GODDAMN SENSE! THERE WAS NOT ONE REDEEMING QUALITY ABOUT THAT MOVIE! I SWEAR IT EXISTS ONLY TO TORMENT ME! AND IT STILL DOES!

Whew! Now I feel better! Thank you Brad for ending E.T. week on "Pod People", as campy as "Homoti" was, it still wasn't enough to give me closure for the horrors of "Nukie". I'm still surprised that you made it out of that with any shred of sanity! At least we had Joel and the Bots and "Pod People" to let us cry on their shoulders for a while tell us that it's all gonna be OK.

    Brad.

As a fellow MST3K fan I've read at least a few other fans on the internet claim the original broadcast version of Pod People on MST3K had a few seconds cut with the puzzle scene that you were wondering about in this video.

Unfortunately for us the Rhino VHS and DVD versions of the episode have that small portion missing.

Some MST3K fan video vendors on the 'net offer the broadcast version at this moment due to assumed post-Rhino home video rights expiring. In fact I'm going to find out for myself how much was cut by ordering a copy of a fan recording now that you've reminded me of this.

I noticed that in the opening you used a fragment of Argentinian E.T rip off. Believe me when i say that no matter the riff you do on it, the people of Argentina are very protective of those two "comedic" actors mainly because they squish EVERY.SINGLE.ONE.OF.THEM and their sports "celebrities" even today because they fail to develop talent and must milk all of them to death. And dont even get started If you saw the tv shows where they think its very clever to also do references (not parodies, references) to Hallowen, Jaws and The Good father by playing the musics in every segment they can think off over and over and over and over until your mind just stops

    (^_^)b It stinks!

Seriously though, Pod People is up there in my Top 5 Favorites of MST3K (although Space Mutiny is my #1). The plot feels like 3 different scripts were drafted and strung together in a shallow, haphazard way, the dialogue sounds so stilted and inhuman (though I'm pretty sure it was dubbed-over audio; Tommy's "voice" doesn't sound natural at all), and I couldn't stand "She Who Has Brain of Rock" and Tommy (although Trumpy, Renaissance Man and Not-Leslie Nielsen make up for that). But all of that just adds to it's so-bad-it's-good charm (it also helps that J.P. knows how to direct a pretty creepy atmosphere; even with Joel and the 'Bots riffing, the 'alien horror' scenes are a tad unsettling).

I also agree on the ending; the more you think about it, Trumpy gets a pretty sad ending. He's still technically a newborn who doesn't know anything about the world since Tommy didn't teach him crap, he's got no spaceship, and no other friends to help him (or to give him potatoes).

That being said, I immensely enjoyed E.T. week (except for NUKIE... goddamn... I read Something Awful's review before, so I knew it was going to suck, but... goddamn.), and I look forward to next week's episode. =)

    HUZZAH! (I couldn't resist... I'm sorry)

This movie didnt seem as funny as those other ones, because this movie is actually professional looking.... unlike the turkish ones and the porn.

Im sure this pod-people/Et-movie is a far more entertaining movie than the other movies in ET-week. But i had a better time with those because it so obvious those suck.
But this is the only of the ET rip offs i could actually watched by my self as though it was any other movie.

I totally agree on the atmosphere in Pod People. It's almost as if it's shown through the perspective of a person with high fever and/or under narcotic influence. Doesn't do me any good, unfortunately, almost feels nauseating rather than providing atmosphere. My other big problem is the characters. It might be poor writing, but the movie can't make me like any of them(except maybe Trumpy). That's a big problem in slasher films. There's no tension if you don't have anyone to root for. The early Friday the 13th movies did that right.

I gotta say, I enjoyed this movie. I love movies that mix up genres, and this one does a great job of being a horror movie with elements of a "kid and alien" movie tacked on. Sure, the stuff with the kid isn't as memorable as the real E.T., but it still has some of the feel they were going for. The horror itself, though, it's pretty well done. It's in the best style of Evil Dead and the early Friday the 13th movies. Go Extra Terrestrial Visitors!
