I'm wondering; did you guys actually purchase the rights to use the Laser Mission footage, or is this more of a "cross our fingers and hope we don't get sued" type of deal?

@Lawrence - I believe Laser Mission is in the public domain. RiffTrax (and a couple of other riffing groups) released a VOD of it, and they usually only do that for PD films.

The comedic timing in this was absolutely spot on, and the jokes were funny from start to finish. How can you rate this anything but a 10/10? I hope this is going to be a VERY long running series, this is simply comedic gold. Good stuff Brad,(and all who worked on this) the content you put up on this site NEVER disappoints.

    Awesome first episode guys!

Just a few things to keep in mind if you are still shooting your next videos:

    1.

Try to lower the video quality of movie-B (or is it A?) so it matches exactly with the grainy low-resolution public domain movies.

Paranormal Activity 3 is a prime example where HD-quality video should not ever be present in the 1980's.

The more added realism in tune with the 80's style cinematography, the more enjoyable it will be.

    2.

Brad needs to ditch the suit and get himself for example a colorful red track jacket and beige pants with sneakers so he mimic the look of a classic Godfrey Ho villain (Bob Solomon from Thunder of Gigantic Serpent)

Also, he needs to employ 80's style thugs wearing street clothes as well instead of just only ninjas.

    3.

Make more of an attempt to recreate off-sync dubbing with speech dialogue. I noticed during the dialogue with Timmy for example that he actually did speak all of his dialogue as scripted, even though the sync was off as intended.

I would suggest the next time while shooting scenes by having characters following a bit of the dialogue in the script -- then ad-lib their own improvised words so it really does look like a bad dub.

I've seen a high high percentage of the Godfrey Ho films, and honestly, Ed and the gang got these things right. The fact that the quality of the ninja scenes doesn't quite match the quality of the other movie is exactly how the Godfrey Ho cut and paste movies were. Brad's office villain with the suit is much like Pierre Kirby's businessman villain in "Hunting Express" and the villain from "Golden Ninja Warrior." Plus, if you look at the English speaking actors in the Godfrey Ho movies, you can tell it's dubbed, but the language is synced in together to the best of their abilities. It's only when the actor is speaking a different language that the audio is that out of sync.

It would make things better if all dubbing had a 0.5-1 second delay with the actual original speech, and hilariously so.

The thing I want to see changed the most is the lowering of video quality from Darkmaze HD video (I'll just call it movie-b reel)

Blurring or compressing the video so it devalues the video quality would be a big step to recreate the feeling of watching an actual Godfrey Ho/Joseph Lai movie from the 80's

I agree that the dubbing during the modern scenes could be made a little more apparent. Either a delay or a re-recording of the lines when the timing isn't fresh in their heads.

The suits, styles and film quality are all great. Only wish there was a facebook button so i could share it easier.

That's exactly how it looked for the English actors in the Godfrey films though, so I think the boys did just fine. In fact, if you look at Pierre Kirby's movie scenes, the dubbing is synced in really well (considering).

Brad and Ed...this is great and all, but...I must tell you this right now, before you make any more episodes:
This has one quite distinguished flaw. The grain effect and all that is good, of course, but...there are too much frames in the video itself - it goes too smoothly and that totally ruins the real 80s movie style and feel. There was no such smoothly running videos back in 80s.
I hope that you will fiх this by the time when the neхt episode goes to editing process, just tone framerate down to the real 80s quality. That would be awesome.

I really like it. I have already seen this episode twice on TGWTG.

I really love the weird B-movie-plot. And the very (in lack of a better word) cheesy humor actually fits well in this series, because it is an homage to the B-movies of the past. Especially that "i was about to give you a ring" and "here is his number and his hotel" kinda humor is very cheesy, but it fits well in this movie. I laughed my ass off. But i will note that those "scary movie", "disaster movie" and "super hero" type movies used the same kind of humor. But in those movies it just didnt work because they thought it was funny. In this series it is fun because it is a joke upon a joke, and it is a B-movie-thing. But if you try it in studio-type cinema movie it would not work. But i really loved it here.

Will not be watching any more of this, the fake crackling sound pisses me off SO much. I know that they're going for that old film feel or whatever, the grainy/line effect I can look past but the cracking I can't. Couldn't finish the video because of this, which is a shame as I think I would have really enjoyed this.
