Thanks so much for the review! I was debating whether to see this movie or not before, mostly due to the original Ghost Rider not being able to get saved only by the awesome that is Nic Cage, but now I'm pumped!

Damn Brad, I think you just convinced me to go and see this now, if it's as much fun as you said it is. I LOVE Nevaldine/Taylor, The 2 Crank films are some of the most fun I have ever had watching a movie.

I saw this last night at midnight, and I'm still reeling over how freaking awesome it was... and I'm with you on the first one, I couldn't stand it.
I also love that Ciarán Hinds is getting so many roles in larger movies now, he's always been a great fucking character actor. I also really enjoyed Idris Elba's performance too.

Glad you had fun with it Brad. Saw it this morning as well and was terribly letdown myself. Cage was great (don't know if any movie will top his "scratching at the door!" moment in this anytime soon) but Drive Angry wiped the floor with this. The action scenes were fine but everything else was dull and unengaging. I wasn't the only one either, there was a guy in a Ghost Rider t-shirt who was fast asleep as I left the theater while the credits rolled. Poor fella. Oh well.
Still love Cage though.

Saw the movie at 11:00AM today, so I saw it before you. I checked the theaters near you using Jerrid's zipcode he keeps on his website. I saw a few AMC theaters and noticed none of them had a midnight showing. I wondered which one you guys go to, and seeing SHOWPLACE in the back there really helps! Thanks!

I completely agree, ghost rider 2 was fucking awesome and tomorrow, i'll probably go see it again because this film was funny, entertaining and a major improvement over the mediocre first film. Also I was also excited to see connor macleod in this cause i'm a huge highlander fan, and I agree, I wanted to see more of christopher lambert, he's connor macleod for god sakes. I dont understand why people hate the movie either, its beyond me. I wish this film was rated R cause there were tons of kids there and 3 kids were kicking my seat and talking the whole time, and what did they do when it ended, they screamed out " gayest movie ever ".

Dude, right now i'm sooooo FUCKING HAPPY that you liked this movie! I'm planning on seeing it on Sunday if at all possible!
This movie is suppose to be what a Ghost Rider movie should be like. A hard R-rated 70s-80s feel as that was when the old comics were set.
Nothing is more annoying than a PG13 movie about a guy becoming a superhero after sailing his soul to the devil.
I hope this movie does really well because they want to make another one and the main dude of the 2 that directed and wrote this movie is going to make a Live Action Twisted Metal movie. That I can't wait to see get made!
I do gotta ask though was I right from what I read long before this movie came out was it is suppose to be completely independent of the 1st movie in that this one has nothing to do with it outside Cage and him briefly saying his origins! Because this movie was suppose to be more of an experiment to test if audiences would go see a reboot sequel that keeps the same lead actor. Like what they want to do with Deadpool!
I kind of said that in your Greatest Movies of 2011 count down video that this is suppose to be like Drive Angry! Here's you an unofficial sequel to that.. sort of!

Ok, just got back from seeing Ghost Rider and it is awesome! I liked watch I saw but I do gotta admit it could've been a lot better in some places. Like with the villains but I'll blame that on budgetary reasons. The one thing I always wanted to see in these movies is a good monster fight.
I want a cewl looking Devil and the Devil in this movie wasn't scary at all. Also something they could've done that'd been a little better on the idea of the devil they had here was actually show him dying better! Threw out the movie he looks like decrepit old man the whole time now if they showed him earlier in the movie as say a 30s-40s-something year old businessman and then after he gives powers to Blackout(Decayer) he shows a shift in age and is slowly getting older and sicker looking rather than just one bloodshot eye and few extra wrinkles!
Also Blackout could've looked a little better than an albino... maybe give him some horns, a tail, and some claws or goat legs!
Or like was originally rumored he was going to fight Vengeance another Ghost Rider but one that is fully evil and loyal to the Devil. That could be the plan for the 3rd movie they're suppose to be discussing if this movie is successful!
I do hope like some dude who posted a link to his video review said there's an unrated DVD released because there were scenes in the trailer that weren't in the movie.
I did like the humor in it with the animated segments.
Is it just me or did that part in the cave where the Ghost Rider's Spirit is excorcized look kind of lie or reminded you of the opening sequence from the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo!?
I am really, really glad one rumor about the movie I heard while it was still filming wasn't true and that the kid in the show was suppose to be Johnny Blazes son. I hate that plot point when it's used in action movies. The hero has to come and save some illegitimate child of their's they or we the audience never new they had.
My favorite scenes was the 1st bit of comedy I laughed at was how that drunk French Priest survived falling off a cliff at high speed... "By God's good graces" and he shown stuck hanging in some tree branches. And,that whole sequence with that giant piece of mining equipment the Rider took over and killed all those armed mercenaries!
The tone and style of this movie is what I hope the do the Deadpool movie in. The crazy cutaways and animated bits.
I hope this does well because I really want to see these same guys do that Twisted Metal movie like this. Their Sweet Tooth will be great if his effects are done anything like the Rider's!

Aw man. I wish everyone else was there to review the film with you. This is the one movie I was looking forward to the most with a big group review to it. You get Jerrid on shit like Tim and Eric and no one today. I hope you do a follow up to this video man when everyone else sees the movie. Hell go see it again with them and then do another video. We now have your initial thoughts on it which tells us if we should go see it or not. Now do a follow up to show how everyone else felt just because it was a fun movie and you all had fun. If that don't happen, I'm glad you liked the movie though man

I know that the movie does not capture at all what Ghost Rider is about, but I will do my best to put aside my personal feelings and try to be open minded and see this movie in the next few days. Have a good time making The Cinema Snob movie, Brad. : )

really? you liked it Brad? aw man, I just saw it, and I got to be honest, I didn't care for it. there were things I liked sure, and I did think it was better than the first one, but.... I dunno, I really thought it was kind of all over the place in terms of tone. cuz some of the tone I really did like, but the jokes, oh god I hated the jokes. the Jerry Springer joke, the pissing fire joke, oh man I hated that, it wouldn't have bothered me as much but they had to use it twice? but the thing that really got me was the ending! how could Ghost Rider beat the fucking Devil so easily?! I felt so cheated when I saw that! it made me think that this movie seemed almost rushed like it was incomplete or something. cuz it didn't feel like the anti was upped enough. we only have one other demon in this movie, and Ghost Rider never seems in any danger to me, ever. but I did love the effects, they were fucking great, and I usually don't like CGI. but man this movie did look cool, I can definitely say that much. and yeah Cage was fucking awesome in this. I loved how insane he went when the Rider came out, that was fucking cool. and I loved his new look in the film, that charred black skull and the burned black leather clothes. way cool, looked allot better than that polished white skull of the first movie. bottom line I guess I just wanted more from the story in terms of kick ass demon fighting. I wanted a giant battle with the Devil at the end, cuz there was plenty of set up for it. but I just didn't get what I wanted, so yeah I did feel kinda let down coming out of the theater, but hey that's just me.

8mm is a fucking great flick. I really love it. it's a great combination of style and substance. it also shows that Joel Schumacher is a great director. I always found it funny that so many people blasted him for Batman&Robin, so he made this film right after to be his follow up. cuz this movie is a dark as they come, even for Hollywood fare. I can't say enough good things about. oh and yeah and it was written by the guy who wrote Se7en! Awesome!

Many of these online critics dont like movies like this because they think they should not like it. Those kinds of critics (rotten toatoes) are the kinds of people who have never tried to make their own movies, they are not that create, and therefore they dont know how hard it is to make movies.
I imagine the film-critics who hate movies like this sitting in the theatre and smoking a filter-cigaret from a cigaret tube, while wearing a monocle, and bitching about how Terence Mallick would have made a much better movie if he had documented the life of a toilet.

I completely agree. I just got back from seeing it a few hours ago. Hated the first movie, but thought that this one was a lot of fun. There were a few scenes where I was laughing harder than I had in a very very long time, I'm referring to the interrogation and transformation scenes.). I really love when Cage gets to cut loose and just be madcap crazy. Your review is totally spot on. I fucking loved it too.
Ghost rider himself looked much better too.

I saw the movie yesturday and I have to say i'm preaty disapointed.
The first movie was a lot better.
From the start you see that they changed a lot from the first.
I was a big fan of the 90's Ghost Rider,so I just did'nt like what they did with him.
The rest was fine.
If only they had explainned the changes,in the Ghost Rider,better.Made this devil another demon from the first one.

Brad, I'm not trying to be a dick or start a fight, but I do have to ask this question to get a better perspective about you, so here goes. Why is Nicholas Cage your favorite actor? I honestly don't see why he is. He's much like John Wayne, he just plays himself and comes off flat most of the time. I'm just curious as to why he's your favorite actor of all time because I just don't see him as a great actor or someone who has really any talent. When I see a Nic Cage film, I see Nic Cage not the role he's playing. Again, I'm not trashing you for liking him, I'm just trying to see from your perspective as to why he's your favorite actor of all time, so I hope I haven't offended you because that's not my intention.

Sure...if you've only seen a few of his lesser action movies. When Nicolas Cage is at his best, he's one of the most versatile actors of our time. "Raising Arizona," "Bringing Out the Dead," "Leaving Las Vegas," "Bad Lieutenant," "Moonstruck," "Adaptation," "Matchstick Men," etc are anything BUT the same performance or the same role. Nicolas Cage is way beyond any kind of range John Wayne ever had.

I'm not looking for a fight, and I'm sorry about the misspell (and yes I know you were kidding but I'm still apologizing because it wasn't on purpose). What I'm looking for is the reason why he's your all-time favorite actor because I just don't see the talent you see. I can only name a few films of his that I liked and I've seen quite a few of them. I saw "Bad Lieutenant" and I honestly thought it was just a horrible movie. Nic seemed to be all over the place and the movie was just unfocused. I loved "Raising Arizona", it's one my favorite films of all-time. It seems like 99% of his films he's just trying to be an "Elvis Presley" wannabe and that's not good because he just comes off extremely cheesy and cartoony. Like the movie "Wild At Heart". If Nic would have cut out all of the Elvisy parts I think it would have been a way better film because those parts were just over the top. Again, it really doesn't matter what I think, I'm just curious as to why Nicolas Cage is your all-time favorite actor and really nothing more.

The Elvis persona was perfect for Sailor Ripley in "Wild at Heart." That kind of attitude was the whole point of that character; the movie was a fucked up warped vision of an Elvis movie.
People either get Cage or they don't. Nothing wrong with having an opinion one way or the other. Those who love Cage know why he's my favorite actor. And those who don't probably will never understand =)

Nicolas Cage is who I look up to as an actor. He's who made me want to play such crazy ass roles, ever since I was a kid his punk rock style of acting spoke to me. And also, I just love a lot of his movies. Nic Cage also has the power though to make a movie entertaining by him just having a great time on screen. Wicker Man would have been unwatchable if not for Cage having the time of his life, and also for clearly being in on the joke of the movie. And at his absolute best, there are some downright masterpieces in his filmography. Mike already named some of them.
If that doesn't help, sorry =) Cage has been in some clunkers, but you know what, so has every actor on the face of the earth; and for someone who has been acting for 30 years, his ratio of good movies to bad movies is pretty fucking good in my book.

Okay, I can kinda see that. That's the exact same things I saw in Clint Eastwood who is my favorite actor of all-time. And yeah he had some horrible films too, but his movies are usually damn good, whether he's acting in them or just directing. The only difference is that it seems like Nic plays his role in "Wild At Heart" for the majority of his films, just at varying degrees. I loved him in "Raising Arizona", "Face Off", "City Of Angels", and "The Rock" because he didn't seem to be trying to mimic the persona of Elvis Presley. I do respect your opinion and appreciate why you love his acting, so I thank you for explaining. Really looking forward to "The Cinema Snob Movie" when it comes out. I'd argue for Face Off being one of the best Nic Cage movies and probably one of the must see introductions to the actor. It showcases both his ability to be dramatic and serious while also acting batshit insane. Though I'm with Brad on it being hard to explain his appeal. I guess he just has this natural screen presence, his acting and presence is often enough to turn a bad film into either a so bad its good movie or a good movie.
Though sadly, that wasn't the case with the first Ghost Rider movie. Even Nic Cage couldn't save that movie... Which says a lot for it. He wasn't... Dare I say? Cagey enough to knock it into so bad its good territory and the movie was just so... Dull and boring... It was... Well... Soulless.
When I heard they'd be a Ghost Rider sequel I was more than skeptical... Kind of rolling my eyes and thinking to myself "That movie made enough money to warrant a sequel" however, upon watching the trailers and noticing the guys behind Crank were behind this one, I decided it may be worth a watch. Film looks pretty fun.

Yes I am watching this one soon, I was fine by the original, but this one literally made me say "I need to see this now, it looks too badass" with the trailer. Glad to see you enjoyed it Brad, I am now more pumped to watching this. Now to see if the following Marvel films of the year will be awesome (pumped for The Avengers, Amazing Spider-man... not so much)

Yeah those last two were nowhere near the level of genius and masterpiece of his most beloved performance in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice".. yes I am joking... somewhat... Funny thing as I watched Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance today (kicked ass so much it makes the original look like a distant memory) I saw a poster for an upcoming Dreamworks Animated film called "The Croods" which featured a caveman that looked very much like Nic Cage, when I looked it up I found out Nic will play this lead character. My first thought "I wanna see this now", my second "at least this animated film is guaranteed to have him more often when compared to past animated films".

Unfortunately, my theater only has the movie showing 2D only so I may not get the same experience as you did Brad. I didn't like the first one either though I liked some of Neveldine/Taylor's movies like Crank and Gamer. Maybe I'll rent it instead.

I myself did have fun with this movie, but at the same time, it felt very, very weak for two reason. 1) I would have liked to see the film spend a little more time with the Ghost Rider, showing off some more of his fighting style and abilities. 2) Plot points and scenarios in the film go by so rapidly that it feels like a clip show rather than a movie. On the plus side, what we do see of the Rider does indeed make me look badass and frightening, and we also get a villain from the comics, Blackout (aka "the Decayer").

Dude, I totally agree with you. I saw this movie today and IT WAS A FUCKING BLAST. It was crazy, action packed, SUPER FUN TO WATCH! Blows the other Ghost Rider out of the water, FUCKING GREAT! Shame to those that bad mouth this flick, IT WAS AWESOME!

I have to agree with most of your points, Brad. While I wouldn't say that this was the best movie ever, I did have a good time. You could see Nic Cage was having a great time with this role compared to other things I've seen him in recently, like The Sorcerer's Apprentice. The Ghost Rider was badass when he showed up. I really liked his "superpower" of being able to take over different vehicles. I fell asleep the one time I tried to watch the first one, so this was easily much better. As far as the movie needing more Christopher Lambert..... every movie could use more Christopher Lambert (except the first Highlander, where they got it just right)!

I LOVED this movie! HOLY SHIT what complete turn around from the first! I LOVED almost everything about it. I personally thought the 3D SUCKED but that's me.
The Ghost Rider had some pretty freaking scary moments here, moments where he made me lean back in my seat and go "HOLY SHIT!" and I LIKED that; he's a damn demon for god's sake, he's supposed to scare the shit outta ya.
I thought the leading actress was TEN TIMES better, and I personally HATED the flaming piss thing.
I didn't like how they took away the Penance Stare; liked that power, but I DID like how whatever vehicle he road, became flaming and demonic like him. THAT was cool.
I liked the kid; thought he was badass. Villain? WAY better. Lambert? AWESOME! Action scenes? KICKASS! Ghost Rider?! FREAKING BRILLIANT!
I give this movie a B+.

Long time watcher, first time commenting. Love your stuff Brad, it is always something to look forward to. It is such a shame the majority of critics and people out there are tearing this movie apart. As a huge(also longtime)Marvel comics fan, I was going to see this regardless of what anybody was saying about it. However, I have come to notice over the years that you and I seem to have a similar taste in cinema so I have come over the past year or so to trust your thoughts from this "Midnite Screening" reviews above all other critical analyses. Thanks to you, I am making it a point to go and see this movie sometime today. Thanks again for this, and all the other entertainment and insight you bring via your videos. Cheers!

I was going to skip on this one, I hated the first Ghost Rider even though I generally like Nic Cage. The "pissing fire" scene in the trailer made me roll my eyes a little, but I might give it a chance if it's a night and day difference between the first one and this.

By the way Brad, the director, Brian Taylor, answered fan questions on Reddit the other day. It was actually highly entertaining, and you might want to check it out. The guy sounded like everyone had a LOT of fun (Genuinely, not just "This is what my agent told me to say") making the film.

It felt pretty uneven IMO. The best stuff centered around Cage & the Rider, but everything else bordered the line between awesome & boring. It's worth renting for Cage & a few other elements, but it's too sloppy to be worth a trip to the theater. That being said... I did love the Twinkie part.

After watching it last night I gotta say that, yeah, that was a LOT of fun. In fact, all the thinks I hated about Crank totally worked here.
It was a bit uneven in tone, but I still found it worked overall. I gotta wonder how they talked Anthony Stewart Head into doing a one-minute walk-on, though.

I'm actually interested in seeing this one now. Cage may make for a good Ghost Rider, but I still think we're damn lucky the Superman movie he was set to star in never got made.
Brad, have you seen Deadfall? That movie was so bad they needed to cut away to Nic Cage snorting coke to make it entertaining. Cage was awesome, and then he died after half an hour.

I just got back from a showing of this in 3D, and while I enjoyed myself, this movie is not good. Nic Cage saved this movie. If they had replaced him with someone else, it would have not worked at all.
I think the thing that really cut the ball off this movie, tho, was the PG13 rating. If they hadn't needed to meet that requirement, there probably would have been a fucking awesome movie in here. As it is it's a really entertaining film with some decent action bits, some funny parts and Nic Cage being all Nic Cagey all over the place, and even then he's more subdued in this flick than he is in some other flicks he's been in recently (Drive Angry...)
It was fun, tho, I will give it that. I, too, love the Cage.

I actually REALLY liked the first one.
And it looks like the 2nd one is awesome..my only real problem with it is that they went with a friggin Yamaha Vmax. The ghost rider is supposed to be a badass biker...on a YAMAHA!?
If they weren't going to go the custom Harley route again they should have at least went with a Triumph Rocket III. It LOOKS the part of a badass bike..and has a 2.3L 3 cylinder engine strapped to the front of it.

I found this movie to be a confusing mess devoid of any story and seemed pretty badly made for a big budget movie. Also I know you like him but Nicholas Cage is not a good fit for Johnny Blaze, in fact every character he plays should just be credited as Nicholas Cage because he's either over the top or wooden depending on how serious the tones suppose to be. They should just make a movie about Nicholas Cage riding a bike with his head on fire, then his fans will get something they like while GR fans wont be disappointed.

I hope you take the time out to read this comment.
I saw the movie last week, but I saw your review later. I hadn't seen the first one, but my god. When I walked out of the theater, I was blown away. Nic Cage, first off, looked extremely hot. I am now obsessed with Johnny Blaze, and my room is literally covered in posters.
The first movie showed a more darker side of him. This movie showed how he was able to use his power for good. How his character evolved through the story. He started out to protect Danny just because in return his curse would be uplifted, but throughout the movie, he started to bond with Danny. They formed a father-son-ish relationship, and the best part was when even after his curse was uplifted, he was brave enough to go save Danny with no powers whatsoever.
It had better action too.
Anyway, I am so pissed off at the fucking ratings this movie's been getting. I mean, 14 on the tomatometer, and what not. Bullshit rating from the Box Office.
Maybe I sound crazy, but hey, I'm just a 15 year old girl IN LOVE with this movie.
I couldn't bear it if a sequel didn't come out. And Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor DID say that they would make one if this movie did well. As much as I hate to say it, it didn't do well. I mean, I know we love it and all, but majority thinks it sucks.
I want to change that. Once again, I sound so crazy, but wouldn't it be cool if every Ghost Rider fan here started buying over a thousand DVD's to help the movie budgeting? Lets say there were about 800 fans who were willing to do so. Each one of them buys a thousand DVD's. In total, that'd be 8000,00 DVD'S BOUGHT.
Lol, I don't know, I'm probably just crazy.
But there's gotta be some way.

Hey Brad. I've been observing your website for sometime now and am a huge fan of your Snob reviews and other things. I'm basically new to this whole thing so I may come off as random and nervous so I'll apoligize in advance if I do. I'm just a really big fan who really wanted to state some comments on this website. If I sound awkward or strange sorry.
With that said, I just got back from this very movie today... You were not wrong. This movie was AWESOME! Loved the characters, loved the effects and loved how actiony it was. The writing was really funny and it's hard not to enjoy Cage. He put his ass into this!
I not only loved Cage but the boy who played Danny and the guy who played Monroe(His name escapes me XC). I really think you were totally right on this. I really think it's WAY better than the first!
Well that's my two cents on this movie. I guess you can imply that your review encouraged me to watch the movie... So thanks

This movie was the worst Comic based movie I've ever seen!!!
Steel was better, even Elektra AND Daredevil back to back would be less painful to watch... If Nic Cage could piss fire in my face right now, I would take it twice like in the movie!!!

That movie sucked big time!!! The 3D was a money rip off!! Nic Cage acting was so over the top I thought that they made him sniff a bag of Cocaine before every take!! The devil was so lame that even my gramma could have beaten him... No wonder his son in the first movie wanted to get rid of him...
And about the first movie: IT WAS DEFINITELY BETTER!!! No questions asked...
The only 2 things that are good about this movie are the special effects (which you can just watch the trailer for) and CHRISTOPHER LAMBERT!!!!!!

Dude! THIS MOVIE SUCKS! WHY ON EARTH DO YOU LIKE IT?!? Nic Cage is freaking AWEFUL in every movie since 2003! Just because Nic Cage is in it doesn't make it good! You justify every Nic Cage film because Nic Cage is in it! If it starred John Travolta or Sam Worthington, you would fucking DESPISE it! You have completely lost me! You don't know good movies! Nic Cage is freaking ANNOYING!Do also like The Sorcerer's Apprentice? National Treasures? The Wicker Man? btw- just because you think a movie is good and critics like it, doesn't mean they have a stick up their asses! It's called an appreciation of good cinema and good cinematic quality! This piece of shit has 2 directors, and neither one of them could tell a cohesive story with ANY decent characters! Hey Dallas. You know I gave negative reviews to the previous Nic Cage movies I reviewed before this, right? They were "Trespass" and "Seeking Justice."
Also, I didn't like the first "Ghost Rider" movie. Plus, I gave a very negative review to "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." Nicolas Cage is my favorite actor, but I haven't liked everything he's in =) Oops.
