Even with its faults, I love Sleepaway Camp and its sequels (canon or not). It's a bunch of harmless fun and it's a great way to kill an afternoon. Considering the time it takes place, all the symbolism to homosexuality was very ballsy. There are threads talking about the meaning behind some scenes like Angela's flashback to her two dads together and the scene following with her and Peter. Still, I love these 80s cult classic gems. A wonderful review that pleased the fanboy in me.

It's interesting but it reminds me of the movie Cherry Falls. It came out in 2000. A killer preys on virgins, carves the word virgin into them. I believe the twist (I tried to google but every review I read didn't have a spoiler) was the male teacher was a victim of a gang rape as a female and had a sex change just so they wouldn't know who they were when they became a teacher at the school. The children he killed were the rapist's children. The cop at the end survives. He was the one that chickened out on the gang rape because he was too nice to do that to someone. He gets a hunch it's the woman seeking revenge in a part of the movie. They vowed they wouldn't tell anybody about it. They made a pact.
It's supposed to be a twist on the whole if you have sex you get murdered in a slasher cliche. They actually have an orgy in part of the movie to stay alive. Reply to this

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Angela doesn't seem to be trans. Trans implies a voluntary change to the physical self in order to match it with the gender they truly identify as. This movie implies that Angela was a cis boy (that is, a boy whose gender identity matches the body they were born with) who was FORCED to become a girl. If anything, he's a victim of forced gender reassignment, which is implied to have really fucked him up.

It was a twist Bruce Willis was a ghost...really?
This is the same film who's ad campaign revolved around the line "I see dead people" and the lead actor is shot in the opening 5 mins...and it was supposed to be a twist he was a ghost?
Personally I thought the twist in Sixth Sense was one of the worst twists ever on film.

Did Angela's look at the end freak you out too, Brad?
...Cause I don't know if I'll get any sleep tonight.

You two aren't alone. What the hell does that face even mean? Is it happy? Terrified? Manic? Or does she need a smoke now that she's finished. Seriously what the hell? this is gonna haunt me (0.o);

I had seen stills of that face long before I finally saw the film. From the stills I thought that Angela would be screaming rather than moaning/groaning.
Also, most of the people in that camp deserved to die: They were all assholes.

Jesus Christ, yes. Shit burned itself into my SOUL. Those sound effects don't help either...

You leave the XFL out of this, Snob. That wasn't nearly as homoerotic as this film. But credit where credit is due on the archery scene. That wasn't an effect, that guy's dead for real.
I'll now resume trying to go the rest of my life without seeing the end of this movie ever again.

[Douchey McNitpick voice] How does the Cinema Snob not know the twist to this movie when he referenced it before in his Friday the 13th Part V review?
Reply to this
Hello, Cinema Snob,
Love ya. Wanted to drop a suggestion. It's a 1981 movie called "Evilspeak", about a bullied Military School student who uses a computer to decipher an old book of Satanic rituals so as to use the info to wipe out the bullies.
Reply to this
I have to say, that's a good suggestion. When I downloaded the Video Nasties, that was the first one I watched (Well, other than the one's I'd already seen). It was actually an enjoyable movie. And speaking of, another good Video Nasty for review could be Visiting Hours.I thought it was an enjoyable movie, but it IS a bit silly (and gave me flashbacks to Halloween II. The original, good Halloween II)

also for those who don't know. that actor who played well the cock was a college student who had to get drunk off his ass to do that scene. they gave him i believe alke. i think? or he may have brought it either way he was drunk off his ass.

I love how The Cinema Snob sums up the movie in three words, "That's A Dick."

Yay! Another movie I recognize. In all honesty this movie is pretty fucking stupid but that twist is really smart. Not just with the film, but with killer psychology too. Living with that twat of a mother alone would drive any person nuts, but forcing them to switch sexes against their will? Yea...
On a side note, I would like to give a fuck you to hh1edits, the guy on youtube responsible for the 100 greatest movie insults, for not including the exchange in either compilation "...this guy blows dead dogs."
"EAT SHIT & DIE RICKY!"
"Eat shit & live Bill."

It's good ole fashion Ed Gein up bringing that always creates serial killers... it'd almost be perfect in this movie if the mother was a religious nut to be the cherry on top!

You've tackled one of my absolute favorite movies of all time, and for this I must give you every internet point I have to my name.
@LucusChad - You're correct. Photos are floating around on tumblr. A podcast I heard some odd months ago said something about the actor being one of Hiltzik's friends or something.

I remember watching this after Brad mentioned it on Radiodrome. And really I thought it somewhat dull, but still pretty entertaining, especially with deranged Snow White at the beginning, and I thought the little kids at the beginning with the accents, aka Vic from Da Big Box's progeny, were soooo adorable, I nearly died.
And the ending really freaked me out because I watched the movie kind of late at night and was dozing in and out of sleep and when the reveal happened I woke right the fuck up because the full frontal shot of Angela was just disturbing... But kind of funny when I think about it.

One thing about this movie always caught me and it was this. In the scene with Artie and Angela in the back room, there are two boxes on the shelves next to Artie, one says Topless, the one next to it says Tubby. I always wondered if Robert Hiltzik intended that as a background gem thing. Idk, if not I think thats pretty funny.
Awesome review, Brad. Love the every week cycle return. And you couldnt have picked a better movie this week. Freaking awesome!

This review was hilarious. I rented this movie in 1990, and didn't expect much. But that ending freaked me out. As a matter of fact I was freaked out when I saw a review of this by some other reviewer last year.
BTW I don't think that was a body double for Angela. I think Angela's naked body was a mannequin, and then they superimposed the actress' head on top of it.
Without that ending no one would have remembered this movie. And why did all of the kids in the early 80s wear nut hugging shorts? Didn't they (we) need crotch room? BTW the bitchy girl looks like Tara from Nash's show.
Reply to this
Nope it was a skinny small framed dude in a really good mask of the actress's face on over his! This was the 80s it was kinda of hard to super impose another person's face onto a different body.

Man, I've been waiting forever for your review of this movie! I wasn't suspecting it'd be today though!
I was hoping you'd use the Robot Chicken skit for this review and you didn't disappoint!
"Oh my gawd Angela is the killer and she's really a boy!"
Well, I see this is why there weren't any Summer camps like that around here... they apparently use those databases on sex-offenders as a catalog to hire people from! Wait, did the pedophile cook actually die from his burns as even with the good makeup effects he didn't look that badly burnt to die of shock!
You know that was not the 1st or last time I've seen a movie where some one was killed by having a turned on curling iron shoved inside them...
I do agree though in the Friday the 13th movies at least Jason was kind enough NOT to murder the children only the asshole concealers! Even though the kids in this most of them seem to be so spoiled and assholish the killer did the world a favor by not allowing them to grow up and reproduce and make more little assholes!
So are you doing a lot more known movies as of now? Because the last few you've done are ones even casual horror buffs would know of!?

This movie was literally filmed in my back yard... The opening scene is Lake Luzerne, NY and you can see my old house on the shore. I actually met the director once and his daughter used to work at a bath and bodyworks in Albany (Crossgates Mall). The camp scenes were filmed in two different locations, but one of them was across the lake from my old house at a real summer music camp. I live in Glens Falls now and one of the houses here was used as an exterior shot for Basket Case.

This is one of those movies that i adore yet must concede is great material for a snobbing. A lot of The Snob's fun poking was towards aspects of the film that I think lend it a certain charm and I like that and think it made for a simultaneously hilarious yet quietly appreciative review. The fact that Brad can come up with so much funny material for a movie that he quite obviously likes is a big part of what I love about The Cinema Snob. This brightened up an otherwise dismal day!

EASILY one of the best horror movie experiences I've, simply due to how ridiculously hilarious the movie was. That ending had us shouting at the screen for a good five minutes. That face and the 'shock' twist were godlike.

Y'know, it's not just the film's ending that is genius, but it you think about the tone of the whole movie, not just the subtle hints along the way, the whole movie becomes way more inventive.
The homo-erotisism, the deviant sexuality of the pedophile cook, the blind eye turned towards him, (hinting that everyone in the film has their own deviancies), and even the foul-mouthed epitahs constantly streaming out of every one of the teens, which revolve around phrases like "fuck", "cocksucker" and "dicks".
The entire movie and every character in it, has sex in all kinds of less accepted forms on the mind, and the entire film is all about this. It takes all of the "uncomfortable" nature of sex and gender and has an entire cast of characters constantly obsessed about it, yet, everyone is frustrated with everyone else, everyone is unkind to everyone else, and there is tension and friction among every single character.
So, literally every single second of this film is leading up to this, in a world where sex and hatefulness hangs thick in the air like a fog, until the ending pops the top off and lets it all loose.

Basically, Sleepaway Camp is actually a social examination of the uncomfortableness and squeamishness that human beings have with each other's sexual identity.
....just handled in a sleazy manner by a rather untalented director who has a tenancy to let his shots and scenes piddle on for far too long.
Reply to this
I have never watched sleepaway camp but I have always heard of it. I loved this review and I will definitely watch sleepaway camp (even though I know the twist ending now) if I get the chance.
Reply to this
the teacher is taking revenge for what happened to his mother, he is the result of the gang rape. The cop was involved in the rape, although he claims to have been too drunk to know what he was doing. The most interesting thing about it is that the girl (I can't remember who played her), realises that her father is not what she thought he was and some of the scenes between them that look very odd, look even worse once you know the ending. I think it's playing around with the literary device of the unreliable narrator when the cop tells his daughter what happened,

The Snob is changing, isn't he? He's becoming more exaggerated than he used to be, to greater illustrate that he's a parody.
What the hell is with her eyes at the end? Did she get possessed by the devil?
Reply to this
There have always been episodes that emphasized the parody aspect. Look at the Salo episode 4 years back. It seems like he usually does that with movies Brad actually likes.
Reply to this
Actually Brad doesn't care for Salo, he just felt it was a perfect review for the Snob.
Reply to this
I know he doesn't, but that's still a video where he plays up the Snob persona.
Reply to this
I too enjoy it when he gets more snobby and snarky. This movie looks more enjoyable than Salo because it at least seems to have some character development. Salo seems to think that we'll feel sad for characters we know nothing about becuase they're being tortured. It's not real life, we know it's fake.
