I agree and disagree. I agree that not many people who don't know of TGWTG will understand the jokes. I mean, if a person never saw "Suburban Knights" or a "Nostalgia Critic Review" then they won't probably understand the material. I disagree in saying that's bad though. The first time I ever saw any TGWTG material was back in 2010 when my friend told me about this crazy internet movie called "Kickassia". I, at first, didn't understand anything that was going on, yet that just motivated me to put the time to understand the characters. I've seen every TGWTG review for the past 2 years so that now I can understand what is going on. I can understand that the reason why the Ghostbusters sequence was placed in the movie was to include the reviewers that could not physically make it to the "To Boldly Flee" special. I thought that was funny since it was a call back to Welshy, Kyle's, and Diamanda Hagan's commentary of "Suburban Knights".

While I had my problems with the first part, mainly it beeing way too long, I have to say that this was even worse. I mean is it really necessary to blantantly rip off an entire scene from Ghostbusters? That really bothered me since this was nothing clever, there was no own spin to it - it was just an obvious steal. If I want jokes about giant food I will stick with real comedies like Ghostbusters or Attack of the Killer-Tomatoes, thank you very much.
The other major complaint I have with this is Spoony. I usually liked the guy in the previous Anniversaries but this is really too much.Is it really necessary to have Spoony, Turl AND Insano in the film? I would have no problem with little "cameos" like in Kickassia but seeing him integrated into the film in 3 roles (so far) that at times run parallel is way too much for my taste.
I do hope that the next episode will finally shift into gear and get going, so far this anniversary isn't really my thing. Seeing that part 1 was too lomg and part 2 just a jumpled mess I hope part 3 will finally find the right rhythm and flow. Reply to this

Those are the people who are openly attacking others for the most part.
Really with rare, rare exception there's nobody really outright being hostile towards the makers on a personal level. I'm really not sure why people are getting so agitated either way about these videos. Surely it's pretty obvious that TGWTG aren't going for high art with these anniversary movies. They're pretty much just an excuse to get all the reviewers in one place and dressing in silly costumes. Sure it's pandering to the TGWTG super fans but so fucking what? Personally I thought Kickassia was just daft fun, Suburban Knights was boring and this one could go in either direction at the moment but it's entertaining enough. If people hate them fair enough, same if people adore them. I'm just aghast at the influx of people on this website recently who lack any knowledge of the definition of the word "Opinion". I understand the points you're making David, and there are a few who've obviously decided rather than actually give criticism they just want to "start shit" in these comments. But I have to say I disagree with your point in the overall. Essentially what you've provided here is an excuse for what they've produced to, well, not be very good. Now, whether you think it's good or not I can't get behind that mindset. I get real annoyed at the "it's not meant to be great!" argument. Because this is something they sell to the masses. These are things they expect money for at some point. So in that regard they need to be more than "an excuse to get all the reviewers in one place and dressing in silly costumes." If it was just internet videos I'd agree with you. But the minute they started selling these things on DVD it became open to high scrutiny just like anything else that's meant "for profit" does. Well I'm not suggesting that it should be exempt from criticism simply because it's "free" or "just an internet video" or whatever nor am I particularly trying to defend it (personally I thought part 3 was pretty bad), more so I'm just pointing out that it's a series clearly tailored to quite a specific audience and IF it pleases that audience then it can be considered successful to a certain degree at least. At the end of the day it's pretty blatant fan-service and I'm sure the DVD's are going to be aimed squarely at people who are already rather big TGWTG fans as opposed to the average Joe on the street. Really I'm just confused as to why people who vehemently hate TGWTG would bother to watch it and make fiercely negative comments about both the series and about those who do happen to enjoy it. I'm certainly not saying people shouldn't be criticising it, more just pointing out that by it's nature this kind of series is going to be pretty alienating to people outside of a certain fanbase. I think the people who watch it that "vehemently hate" TGWTG really are doing so because, in spite of that hate, they like some of the individuals involved. Be it Brad, Spoony, or whoever. So they feel almost obligated to watch it because they like at least some of the people involved in it's creation. Those making the really fiercely negative comments about those who enjoy it are just assholes, and a cursory glance at the comments will reveal an extreme minority of assholes to boot.
I agree that these series are obviously designed to, for lack of a better less negative sounding word that I can come up with off the top of my head, pander to the fanbase. For me that's part of the problem. If you're going to make a movie or miniseries of this kind, and expect to get money from them, it seems to me that they should at least try to reach a broader audience. Sure they might not reach a broader audience monetarily, but at the very least it could have some appeal beyond just those people who watch the videos online. It could become a movie you could watch with friends that don't already know everything about the site and the reviewers.
That alongside what I see as declining quality, lazy writings, and references as jokes - which Film Brain has rather ironically taught us are not actually jokes - has left me kind of disappointed in this so far. The first part was a great start in my opinion, and it's been downhill fast since then. Reply to this

Do you realize the irony of such a thing when we're posting in the comments section of a man who makes his living on criticism? Virtually nobody is "trashing it to be cool" to paraphrase you. Some people in the past specials have made comments which have been basically attacks on the people who put the time and effort to create this special though and I don't think that's cool. I mean, if you have problems with the plot or the pacing then by all means express your opinion (including that reason), yet if you're just going to be hateful to the people who made this, then don't comment at all. It's not constructive dialogue.

Are you doing it for a reason other than to bitch and whine? Or are you just whining cause you think people give a damn that you are whiny? If you don't like it at this point, cool. I don't to see you back for part three... unless you are just a giant, trolling douche bag. Then welcome back!
Reply to this
Um...I actually really enjoyed part 1. So maybe you should take your head out of your ass and stop trying to dictate to people what they can and cannot do. Especially in regards to watching something on the internet. It's perfectly acceptable to watch something, dislike it, and talk about what your problems with it were. If it wasn't Brad would get ripped to shreds constantly about the midnight movie screenings, etc. It's also perfectly acceptable to have disliked a part of a larger whole but been curious enough to continue watching because you want to see where it goes and how it ends. Criticism, when reasonable and politely expressed, is not trolling. Calling someone a troll because their opinion is different than yours on the other hand is precariously close to trolling in and of itself.

I swear to god, you people aughta, just...pfft, fuckin dicklickers all of you. Let me tell you something right now. What you don't understand is the genius of Doug Walker!
This isn't like that boring ass shit that Spielberg does. Doug actually gets into the mind of these critics!! It's like a funny psychological thriller, like Hitchcock. But you assholes don't appreciate it, nor do you understand it, because you all suckle at the teet of Spielberg!
It's just fucking disgusting. The hot dog scene. That means...that the critics are angry! Get it now? They are all alone, they are without their families, they have bad childhoods. And that pisses them off even further!

How dare we to disagree with you?! Its not like the unwashed masses at TGWGT have been giving enough praise on their very site. You seriously delude yourself if you think this is some deep and profound work. We are trying to be the critics this time around and like Brad once said "If this movie gets nitpicked to shit, it fucking deserves it". And for the record, we won't suck Doug Walker's dick on this one.

Hmm, that went south fast... I mostly liked the first episode, a big improvement over the last couple of anniversary movies. It was watchable and for the most time, it was fun. But this episode seemed kind of off, like the "say whaat?" joke in the beginning, more cringe worthy than enjoyable imo.
A small handful of funny jokes though, not all bad. Less optimistic about the rest now, but i guess it could go either way at the moment.

I do enjoy reference humor...but out right stealing a full sequence straight out of ghostbusters? I don't think I can get behind that. It just seems kind of lazy...and worst of all, felt like nothing but a method to get in some cameos. This has been by far the best of the anniversary specials, but the amount of outright theft of scenes and ideas for the sake of humor is something I really don't like.
Reply to this
another problem with such full referencing is that someone who hasn't seen it will absolutely not get it, because doing an entire bit doesn't require giving it context (unlike taking 1/10 of something and having the other 9/10 filled by either knowing the reference... or seeing what is done in the current project)
It's pretty much why Brad's fucking awesome - I get a only small amount of his references - but the way he sells them and relates them to the reviewable material let's me get what he was going for... and hell, even learn about what he's referencing
Reply to this
I don´t like it when a reference is there just for the saking of referencing. Like the introscene with Paw, taken shot for shot from the intro of Contact. But there´s no joke or anything, it´s just "hey look, we saw contact!, remember that movie?".
I´m not sure i get it, personally i would rather see what the Walkers could think up, i already saw contact, and it was better, presented filmed and better acted than what was offered here. Guess its just a matter of taste, some people seem to love all these small "tributes/rip-offs/parodies(not really?)" or whatever you can call them.
Reply to this
You know there's another group of guys who's idea of humor is just throwing references in.
Jason Seltzer and Aaron Friedberg.
Look all I'm saying is that Doug and Rob are the indie Seltzerberg there's no denying it now, not after they made Vampire's sucks without realizing the irony of mocking a shitty franchise.
Though some of the pro-Doug Walker folks make compelling arguments. Doug's films are pretty fucking brutal man.

I really do love these anniversary specials, but this one wasn't AS good as episode one. Not their fault, really, it's a "bridge" episode, so they had to put a lot of stuff together. I thought the teleporter bit was a little lazy, but I guess they did explain it. Could've been better, but could've been much, much worse as well.
As for people complaining about it... Well, it IS their right to do so, and God forbid I keep you from speaking your minds. And I suppose the "if you know you won't like it, don't watch it" argument is a tad flimsy considering the people they're criticizing.
So I guess I'm saying that while you have every right to your opinion, if you'd like it to be respected, just make sure you can back it up.
Although I do find it funny that so far we have more people complaining about people complaining than we do people actually complaining.

For me, this was BIG improvement over the first part. I was actually laughing quite a bit here. As I figured, once they got the rhythm and pacing up, things would start to click. I loved the timing between Brad & Sage, and Sad Panda's little sly bit with Dr. Insano was funny. I'm glad they outright addressed the fact that in Kickassia, Spoony & Insano were the same guy, but not here and why. I genuinely think Noah did an amazing job in all three roles here. Nice appearance by Ed Glaser, too.
I've gotta LOVE that Brad essentially played the Bill Murray role in the "GhostBusters" Walter Peck scene.

Ok, cringeworthy blatant ripoff Ghostbusters parody in the beginning of the second part aside, this was pretty damn entertaining. I just hope we can avoid more of those "parodies/homeages" that are that blatant.

Yeah. I try not to be too harsh, and I said in another comment I do enjoy reference humor, but the outright ripping off for no reason whatsoever other than to get cameos into the special was just too much. I'm a fan, but that's not a "parody" or an "homage" that's borderline plagiarism.

Not as good as Part 1 in terms of actual story plot but the jokes were funnier.
What kills me though are the above comments. Can you imagine if this was an actual movie in cinemas? How many people would watch and enjoy it? If this was a real movie, all in one piece then I think the critics would hate it.
Special effects looked alright, nothing spectacular.

That really is the problem with these anniversary specials, if you don´t know the people involved and the context, you´re not going to get half of the jokes. You really have to forgive a lot of issues to truly enjoy these specials, which is easier if you´re a fan of spoony/brad/doug or whoever.

"That really is the problem with these anniversary specials, if you don´t know the people involved and the context, you´re not going to get half of the jokes."
"Oh god, these things are getting worse and worse. I mean was the script written by a drunk 4 year old?
I watched part 1, and fucking hated it, but this part made me want nail my scrotum to my desk so I would be distracted from the mind fuck.

The movie is called Silver Streak, it's a buddy comedy starring Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, one of the duo's best.
And dammit Brad, now I have to go track down a copy of Silver Streak so I can watch it.

So far the best anniversery movie. This was better than the first part, had some good lines and jokes but the whole ghostbusters bit was very Freidburg-Seltzerish. Which is bad.

Wow, so much trolling in the comments. I really hope most of the people commenting are (how could I put it?) young adults. It would be really sad if people in their 20's are writing comments like this.
Come on guys. If you don't like it, be constructive about it. Trolling doesn't achieve anything, and getting pissed at some guy who has a different opinion from you just throws fuel on the fire.
I would hope that by now people are receptive this kind of common sense but I think the young viewership tends to skew this. I'll take a look at part 2 a little later (Watching Scorsese's After Hours for the moment) and will critique if necessary.

It's these videos that Brad needs to incorporate some form of discipline through banning or removing comments. It's fine liking and disliking, but there comes a time where you guys start getting abusive towards Doug Walker and the rest of the contributors for no reason but for shits and giggles.
Reply to this
No, I'm not going to be banning anyone. Doug is my friend, and no one likes seeing bad stuff written about their friends, but I also don't like the practice of banning comments of people who disagree or dislike something that I post. So they don't like it, that shouldn't take anything away from the people who do like and enjoy it. Plus, honestly, we make fun of stuff all the time on this site and on other sites. It's ok if people make fun of us, that's only fair =)
Reply to this
The only comments that I'd really like to see you ban are the ones that look like obvious spam. I don't come to this site to see vbiowet post about drug arrests. I come here to see you try strange soft drinks and give your friends meat action figures for their birthday!
Reply to this
Yeah, I've gotten rid of a lot of those spam accounts, and spam guard manages to catch a very high percentage of them, but unfortunately some still get through.
Reply to this
and that good sir is a highly admirable and very mature way of looking at things. I think the practice of banning those that dislike something and voice their opinion has, quite frankly, gotten out of hand in a lot of places - TGWTG included. I understand that some people are dicks and completely insufferable, but unfortunately it very often seems that people who have legitimate gripes or opinions that aren't glowingly positive often get lumped in with that lot as well nowadays. So it's nice to be able to post thoughts and comments somewhere without the fear that they'll be met with immediate censorship.
Reply to this
Sorry Foggy, but I have to disagree. Sure there are some people who are assholes, but most of them are being reasonable and expressing their point of view in a coherent, polite, and logical manner. If we have to put up with a few jackasses so that we can actually have a place that allows freedom of speech and legitimate criticism rather than having anybody with a dissenting opinion immediately banned so as to preserve the echo chamber then, as far as I'm concerned, so be it.
Reply to this
I have no problems with anyone who can piece together a coherent criticism for these films, sure they're not high art and won't be to everyone's tastes so they're allowed to voice there opinions. But get rid of the jackasses and people would start becoming less hostile towards one another.
People who like the films would stop getting mocked and ridiculed and those who dislike them would be able to voice there opinions without being so hostile towards the makers.
Reply to this
See and I don't see a whole lot of people being hostile towards anyone. It's mostly just a few here and there, and the bulk of the people being openly hostile and asshole-ish are people who like what they've seen and seem to want to act as if disliking something is somehow against the rules. Those are the people who are openly attacking others for the most part.
Really with rare, rare exception there's nobody really outright being hostile towards the makers on a personal level. And if you start banning the rare exceptions that are assholes the only thing you accomplish is getting things even more hostile as people start being jerks by way of "revenge" for the free speech being repressed.

I think I've seen more fuck Doug comments already than "rape faggot Josh" comments over the past year!

I think people are seriously overreacting to a group of fans who don't like something expressing that fact. There's a weird culture of "if you don't like it shut the fuck up!" that I just don't understand.
Reply to this
Yeah, it's an especially weird culture for a group of fans of a program dedicated to watching movies and making fun of them.
Reply to this
Well I do understand, and I am fine with people saying they think it sucks, it's just the vile complete bitching about it every installment and direct slagging off of Doug and co. Honestly so far with To Boldly Flee I'm finding it very hit and miss; some of the jokes seem really good, but then there were the painfully cheap feeling to me personally that felt like padding and contrived, such as "the hole" stuff early on.
Just to show I'm not raging against people for not liking it or anything as a fanboy, just the weird trolling style ones or just really mean-spirited.

Was anyone else bothered by the "keep you on schedule" line? Seemed like a criticism of Spoony's lack of videos
Reply to this
You mean like some kind of foreshadowing to what would happen later? I wasn't bothered by that, but it seems coincidental at least.
I think what's strange right now is that Spoony has way more screen time and characters in this special than any of the other reviewers (maybe second to Nostalgia Critic), yet he's no longer apart of TGWTG. I understand the possible reasons, but it's still weird.

Ah Silver Streak... True Story: I first saw Star Wars:ANH at a midnight showing at a drive in when I was three. It was doubled-billed with Silver Streak. I fell asleep about half-an hour in and my parents despaired that maybe taking a three year old to a midnight showing was a bad idea and I would never wake up to see, let alone last through Star Wars. They were wrong. I woke up about ten minutes before SS ended, got freaked out (if you've seen how the film ends you'll know why) and was wide awake until the end credits started rolling on New Hope. And thus my life was lost to the sweet embrace of endless nerdom...

He's not really plugging it, he has the posters of his movies up all the time. When he occasionally does vlog videos, you can see them in the background.
I don't think it's a conscious thing, they're just there because he films in his house.

After reading comments to the video on TSE,AT4W, TGWTG and here I can't help but ask myself how it comes that there are almost 0 critical comments on the other sites.
You could debate that some comments here cross the line of valuable criticism but most keep their comments somewhat coherent and constructive - there is a certain level of discussion while on the other sides there is nothing like that.
I wonder why thats the case - are we overly critical or just not completely blinded fan boys?
Reply to this
The reason you see criticism here and not the other places is, well, no offense to the other sites but they have basically labeled anybody with a criticism as trolls for a very long time, and banned the vast majority of those who would make even the slightest criticism. They've created their own echo chamber. So by comparison the snob comments look more angry and vitriolic than the other sites for the simple fact that dissenting opinion is allowed to be voiced.
Reply to this
Well that makes sense...nothing against a little bit of good ol' fashioned censorship I guess.
Reply to this
Well, in the case of my site while I do approve comments, I do so to ensure I read all the feedback. I rarely have to deal with a legitimate troll post on my blog, and those are the ones that are pretty obviously meant to be ones, using insults or homophobic slurs. Genuine criticism is accepted and sometimes responded to. Other times I don't want to respond to it since I fear giving away spoilers.
I tend to let everything through at least once, but if someone is being demeaning or insulting I basically say on no uncertain terms will it be allowed and if I see another remark like that, it won't go through nor will any other ones they make.
There's a difference between "I'm just not enjoying it / I don't find this funny" and "You all suck and I hate this."

for me i'm having a ball watching it. part 2 wasn't as good as part 1. but that doesn't bother me, cause i may enjoy the next installement.
yes this is a ripoff of various movies, but that doesn't bother me either. Doug i'm sure grew up with all these various films and loves them no doubt. i thought the ghostbusters scene was funny. and well done. this is a tribute to those films no doubt.
it's been done before in films where it mentions about a dozen different movies or has various parts in it. it's NOT a new idea. i don't get the hate for it.
people did the same thing last year for the lsat special,
yet i read more postive things about that this year than i did last year. if you don't like it than don't watch it that's pretty simple. i take it for what it is, a bunch of friends making a film about films they love.
some of it may be cheesy but that can't always be helped. just have fun with it. and don't take it serious i'm not.

I like the Anniversary specials, but the problem is that they don't make me laugh. I find them entertaining and interesting enough to keep watching, but there was only a few times in this video that I actually thought were funny. I guess a big part of that is not really getting some of the in-jokes, but a lot of the regular jokes seem to fall flat, too.
Obviously a big part of that is the acting, and how it varies from pretty good to just straight up awful, to the point where it's painful to watch. Spoony has WAY too large of a part in this, and I like him generally.
I really don't think I was supposed to like "Upset Prick" as much as I did either. I hope he's not out of it for good, he was one of the most enjoyable parts.
Reply to this
i dont hate this, but i dont like it every much either. Well afterall acting and directing are professionals. I must say hardly there is anyone that can act besides Brad and Spoony.
The only reason I watch it is because it is free and I'm too goddamn bored.

Part 2 was a little better, though predictable and sometimes pedantic. Some things made me laugh...the Brad/Bennett explaining what happened, JesoOtaku coming in a year late (she was pretty good, honestly), Mickey flipping out. Helped it was way shorter than part one. I hope it's not the end of Elisa because she can definitely act (not bad to look at either). Spoony sure did put in some overtime on this one. Not sure when Brad's big part happens (goes to the dark side?) but looking forward to it. It's good to see Orlando as well as he was great last year and makes me want to see the Snob movie even more.

Wow Bard really has my respect for taking the high road and letting people say whatever good or bad, instead of easily censoring anything he wants. What I don't like about to boldly flee and a fair bit of the nostalgia critic episodes of recent(last 4 - 3months), is that dougs writing is really getting stale, I feel burned out watching it. This is compared to say a year ago when I would watch them and laugh no problem, now they just devolved into angry self loathing rants on whatever shit he has to watch that week. There's a real lack of heart and emotion for example that we have seen in some of spooneys reveiws of late. Like the last ultima one, I'm not saying every review has to be citizen kane. But it never hurts to take a break, look for some inspiration in new stuff or older reviews and come back fresh, or even try something new. No one say he has to do nostalgia critic for the next 5 years, some of the best artist change there style and reinvent themselfs in new and intresting ways. Whos to say doug can't entertain without screaming at a camera.

You know what I like about this message board?
Complete and total freedom.
Here, I can say anything I want. If I want to swear, I can swear. If I want to insult these crossover videos, I can do that. If I want to say that Doctor Insano HAS a backstory, I can do that. And if I want to make fun of that thin-skinned pussy bitch Jarkes, I can do that.
In Linkara's blog, Linkara is constantly breathing down our necks, telling what we can or can't say and reacting to the slighest of negative comments like a whiny little kid.
Well, I say fuck that! From now on, I'm commenting here, where I can actually say what I want!
Oh, and Lewis, if you are reading this: if you think I'm the Exiled One, I'm the Exiled One. If you think I'm Jarkes, I'm Jarkes. And if you think I'm Lucky the Leprechaun or Coronel Sanders, I'm them, too. Take your "writing style" and shove it up your zit-infested Trekkie ass.

Hell, I was still granting you leeway to post EVEN AFTER I caught you trying to impersonate someone else.
I have been exemplary in my patience with you.
However, saying what you want does not deny me the right to respond in turn and call out misconceptions or mistakes. On top of that? Brad's not too fond of posters impersonating other people around here, either, since it's happened before.

Not gonna lie guys, for a movie about a bunch of guys who whine about everything, it sucks twice as much as the material they usually review.
I think they owe Uwe Bowl an apology.

Ha! Uwe Boll should do a review.

No, he should box the TGWTG crew. Him chasing them around the ring would make for a zillion YouTube videos, poops, and other Internet bullshit.

I laugh at all the butthurt in the comments here. Seriously, can't we just respect each other's opinions and move on with our lives? Dont like it? Fine. Do like it? Fine. So please, people, stop arguing and bitching like spoiled little children and just learn how to take differing opinions. God.

The people who are saying this sucks because of how it is acted or shot have some solid points, this isn't a hollywood shoot or even a Brad Jones production though, the Walkers could only get all these people together fur a limited amount of time.
The fact that some scenes were shot by the reviewers themselves is testament to that but if you're watching this you can't let that distract you from its merits.
Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed some of the gags and loved seeing some of my favorite reviewers like Sage and Brad play off each other but I thought it dragged at times and all in all has been less enjoyable than Kickassia so far. All I'm saying is, give it a fair chance and don't just bash something for trolls sake.
