I know it's been months and months .. That's precisely why I'm starting to wonder. Has he lost a bet :/ For he has to wear a cap for an entire year straight ?! Or does he care for fashion now (he always had terrible hairstyles anyway ... no offense Brad, I actually kind of miss em) ?

I agree with the bizarre choice of song for the Gangster Squad. I actually don't mind rap music (well, the older stuff, most of the stuff these days is mediocre), but I agree it has no place in Gangster Squad.

this film does seem interesting now, but yeah sense you mentioned Tree of Life again Brad, It is only for hard core Malick fans and mainly for Malick himself. so i do get how you don't like it, I only liked Tree's cinematography but Atlas seems like it would be funny to see

I liked this movie a lot more than you did, but fun review.
Although I agree about the make-up. I think the movie would be a lot more enjoyable (I don't know if that's the right word to use in regards to this flick, but I'll use it) if the make-up wasn't constantly taking you out of the movie. Still, really interesting flick. I dug it.

I have to say i agree with this young lady, I think her names Mantis. If I am wrong you can shout at me. Cloud Atlas the book is very dream like in its writing in that you are noit sure which telling is the true eality. however this films sounds 50 shades what the hel. Keith David is chinese, what? If they did balckface I think the Wachowskis would fine it very hard to find work again. I dont get why people are giving Manti s a hard time she seems fine to me. She likes Perffect Blue and any girl who likes perfect bnlue is ok in my book.

Why do white people think that ANYthing to do with black people in art can be reputation and career destroying? The Wachowskis would have been in trouble if they used BLACKFACE, which is black shoe polish with white around the lips. But why would they do that? If they put care into it, and darkened the actors face and tried to make them look like real black people, they would have been laughed at (like the redheaded blue eyed korean, or Wayans Brothers as White Girls) but their careers wouldn't be over. Are you forgetting that Robert Downey Jr. in Thunder was a total success?

Robery Downey Jr was doing a parody of actors who do that sort of thing. Right thin is we asa species should have moved bpast making somneone who is a different race another race. THe Wayeans you are right got away with it in White Chicks. However they didnt get away with it in Little Man, which is evil. Eddie Murphy made himself oriental in Norbit. I mean seriously dude this is not cool anymore. The Wachowskis are better than this and they should know better. Lana Wachowski surely has had to put up with a lot of shit through her decision to become femae. My problem is that there are talent oritnal acots out there who could replacate the quiks of these actors and pretend to be these acotrs. in an alerntive universe. Example of which is Faceoff where John Travolta and Nick Cage got each oithers mannrisms down.

Blackface is when a non-black actor/actress dons make-up in order to appear to be black. The end. It's not just shoe-polish and white lips (that's just one form it takes). Yellowface is the same act, only done against Asians. And Redface is for Native Americans/Inuits.
White Chicks is not the same thing. Why? Because what the Wayans did didn't contribute to the long-history of oppressing white women by a black-favouring society. White women weren't suddenly at the bottom of the power structure of the world.
As for RDJ, it was a satirical take on the very thing that occurs in Cloud Atlas. Though, depending on who you ask, the results are a mixed batch. But that's more a fault of the writing on properly conveying the wrongness of what his character was doing over the comedy-aspects.

Well it cause they brought up blackface and I know thats a step too far. I never said it was ok I said they got away with it. I am not a fan of their work to begin with. I thought it was racist. As I said get an actor of thart race to mimic the other actors mannerisms.
I think Downey was taking off actors like De Niro who go to extreme length to play their roles. The book has these ideas in thhat alternate universe versions are basiclly sttill you. However I think this is amassive misstep

Brad talked about it in May. THey seperated. Some people gave Jillian a hard time about it. I think Brad rightly ate people out about it. Then When she appaeared on Drunk Brian's Tox test its becuase her anjd Brad had got together, I think thwey live near each other. She has stood up for Brad and Jillian and takes no shit. I follow a lot of stuff and Jill on face book and twitter. I've never seen her say anything about Mantis either way. Never seen it in a comment anywhere either. They're not friends on face book or anything so as far as it seems she may not be okay with it and you probably shouldn't say she's stuck up for her if she has not. Just saying, as far as it looks you shouldn't assume things either way.

Do we really have to keep dragging this nonsense out? It's been stated on many occasions that Brad and Jillian's separation was amicable, that they dealt with it in a mature and civil manner and that they still remain really good friends. That all being the case I think it's perfectly reasonable to assume that Jillian doesn't have a problem with Brad dating someone else.

Well There is these things called WKD which I cant imagine selling well in US as they are based upon Vimto and Irn Brew respectively. Also I want toi send some crabbies which are alcoholic ginger beers, which I cant see being sold in the us. If all these are I will have to have a rethink.

Then I figured this is a new friend or maybe a cameo from another site. Then I thought, wouldn't that be crazy if Brad got divorced and eventually brought in a new chica to his shows. Hey, it's about time we saw Mantis; I was wondering where she'd been hiding, or if she was even going to be a regular. You two are a cute couple (which wasn't...immediately apparent in the last vid, enjoyable though that was). Mantis, are you going to be joining the gang for the in-car movie reviews?
I'll be seeing the movie in the next couple of days. Since I was already expecting it to be overblown and pretentious, I didn't mind being spoiled. I'm just looking forward to the visuals and seeing how crazy things get. You guys are meeting every expectation I had of the movie, though I wasn't expecting it to be a comedy. I just hope it's not as boring as Tree of Life, though (I'm OK with Mallick, but not THAT one).
P.S. I'm not saying anything, but could there be a new Big Box episode in the near future? :p

As usual, I'm not up with the love life of Brad! Not that it's any of my business...
I just watched this review and noticed all the hair twirling that Mantis did, which is often a good indicator of sexual attraction. And Jesus, did it show! You could literally scrape it off with a knife, the way it was hanging there in the air!
But then I read some of the comments here and discovered "the truth".
Hmm...I've nothing against Mantis. "Welcome to the Snob's world?"
But I'll miss Jillian. She was cool!

Jillian's not gone! Hell, she just did the Silent Hill 2 midnight screening the night before. She's still a member of Team Snob, just not Mrs. Snob anymore. Mantis is not Jillian or vice versa so can't we just appreciate the both of them in the future?

I'm really glad to see that the sexist wankers from the Drunk Brian Tries Tox Test review didn't dissuade Kelly from appearing on the site again. She was really charming and sweet in this review and it was nice to see someone else as bewildered as I am as to why The Great Gatsby needs to be in 3D and have Hip-hop music in it's trailer. That's one of my favourite books ever and I'd prefer it not be besmirched by Kanye West and Jay-bloody-Z!

Yep. There's a reason why F. Scott Fitzgerald was known as the voice of the Jazz age and not the voice of the Hip-Hop age. One positive thing I can say about it is that I do at least think Leonardo DiCaprio is a good choice to play Gatsby.

The book is very complex, dense, and has a lot of layers to it. I still don't understand it and I was guided through it a class. I had all of the pieces laid out in front of me and it still takes a while to process. My classmates were all excited to see it but I felt otherwise. With the book being the way it is a movie adaptation would have been a very difficult thing to pull off. The book is separated into different sections and they all have their own styles of writing. My apprehension was having to do with how that would translate because that adds to the charm of the book. But I was also coddled through it and explained for the most part.
And for the make up issues, I know what they were trying to with the idea of the eternal recurrence. The idea of reincarnation is clearer in the book, but again it isn't quite clear, especially with Timothy Cavendish(old age home guy and my favorite from the book). The casting in the film does muddle this up a bit and the make up makes it even worse. What I believe they were trying to get the reincarnation across, but it turns out laughable.
The book is wonderful but dense. It is hard to understand the book and it is no surprise that the movie turns out to be the same/worse.

MovieBob, who has a hilariously bad taste in movies loved The Cloud Atlas and even raved about the makeup. He said no other makeup artist even needs to bother showing up for the next Oscar ceremony.

I was curious of this movie but it looks more like the kind of film I'd want to watch at my house so I can pause it and comeback as it just seems like it'd be crammed so full of crap I'd get a headache trying to sit through it all at once!
I've seen a pic of the Hugo Weaving as an Asian and to me he looks like if Mr. Sulo and Mr. Spock had a kid together some how! Those Volcan eyebrows!

My T-Shirt Hell story:
I was standing in line at my Subway getting my usual and wearing my School Shootings Tour t-shirts and this elderly couple stood next to me and looked at my shirt. What made it awkward was they weren't offended by it, they just brought up that their son likes to go to the shooting range.
Also, I'll probably wait until this movie comes out on Netflix and get some friends together to watch it and make jokes. That's just the kind of movie it seems like.

I think I pretty much agree with Brad, if I get what he's saying. The movie was interesting and entertained me, but was not well done technically.
Good story/script, but mediocre to bad execution.
There were a ton of makeup and special effects problems. Also, I think some of the actors were miscast. I don't think some of the people used had enough range to make their roles work.
This is a movie that probably needed twice its budget to reach it's vision fully: money for realistic sets, better makeup, and top A-list actors for every part.
I appreciate what they did do, though.

Basically: Amistad + Brideshead Revisited + Silkwood + Cocoon + Blade Runner + Soylent Green + The Postman = Cloud Atlas.
That, and, of course, a cumbaya lefty political lecture mixed with weak tea new age spirituality. If you've ever sat in traffic behind someone with one of those "Coexist" bumper stickers on their car, you've already been exposed to all the deep meaning that Cloud Atlas has to offer.

The fact that you didn't hate this movie makes me so incredibly happy! I was expecting 45 minutes of "This movie sucked", so anything short of that was wonderful. I personally think this movie is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen, if not THE greatest, but to each their own.
As for the book, it does make certain things left ambiguous more explicit, but I think the movie is better.

Sorry to say, but I couldn't help but notice that either. And that in turn made me notice that Brad also says "like" a whole lot too. It wasn't annoying to me or anything, but it just seemed really noticeable this time around.

When are you guys getting Killer Joe (by William Friedkin) in the USA? I think you're going to love it, if it ever gets a release. It has been in theaters for some time in Europe, but it's rated NC-17 in the states and I don't know if there will be a wide release for it over there...

As someone who lives in Springfield, Missouri let me just say HI! Also, we aren't rednecky here. Okay, so some people are. Also, the Todd Aiken ads have gotten out of control since his 'legitimate rape' slip, that's why they are everywhere. He's campaigning hard to try to get some ground back. I don't think it's working.

I feel the same as Brad... I liked it, but didn't. I didn't understand half of it but kept watching because it was entertaining in a weird way. I don't know. I've never seen a movie like it, it's so hard to describe. And for that, I give you props Brad and Mantis (I believe that's her name, I apologize if I'm wrong.) Good review.

Spoilers ahead. I think that it would be easier to understand if you've read the book... but I can't say for certain. I've only just started reading it. Still, I did enjoy the movie, and I don't think that it is -that- unintelligible. Yes, there is that surprise leit motif which actually came up in four of the six settings, but ultimately my sense of the movie is that it is about people standing up to the injustices that those in a position of power try to impose on people who are 'weaker'. Man's injustice to his fellow man. "The weak are meat, and the strong do eat," as the movie puts it... the whole thing is a rebuke of that in the triumphs. Now, not all of them perfectly encapsulate that, but when viewed as a whole, that is the impression that I get. There's also the message that it is not by solitary acts that changes are made, but by the meeting and interaction between people that life takes on meaning. That ties in with the message against the selfish pursuit of power at the expense of others.
In fact, it does seem the book makes the point clearer ( in a quote I've just come across ), “Why fight the 'natural' (oh, weaselly word!) order of things? Why? Because of this--one fine day, a purely predatory world shall consume itself. In an individual, selfishness uglifies the soul; for the human species, selfishness is extinction.” It is those who fight to overcome selfishness that triumph and save the day. Illustrated by caveman Hanks who visibly fights the temptation within himself, and in the end helps to save what's left of humanity on earth from its final destruction.
At least, that's the message that I get from it.
