Yeah, we never did the commericals, they always took up space on the tape so you were lucky if you were able to record a tv movie beginning to end AND the commercials all on the same tape.

Sorry Bugs, I don't like carrots! If I want to go on an all-vegetable diet, I go with cucumbers (salt included).
Watching bits of the old cartoons from the special brings me back to when I watch them on Nickelodeon in the early 90's. Funny you were talking about censorship in those cartoons. Recently, I saw the Cartoon Network version of The Scarlett Pumperknickel, which cuts out two parts including Daffy sniffing on the white stuff and shooting himself in the head. When it was on Nickelodeon, they not only keep the sniffing scene (which I never noticed as a kid until now), but also worked around the suicide scene. As a kid when it would cut to the outside door, I always thought it was the guy shooting Daffy. But then I saw the full version on YouTube and now knew the outcome. Censorship is bizarre.
Plus I agree that Taz is awesome. Used to have that little Taz pillow as seen in The Mask, and I play the crap out of Escape from Mars on the Genesis.

I too have this special kept on tape from around 1983 and was able to transfer as a computer video file among other nostalgic VHS tapings.
Somehow I must be spoiled, even at my age, to remember most of the stuff cut out in the cartoons for TV including Scarlett Pumpernickel (save for a rare one from Bug House Bunny I believe it was called.

I’m sure I watched this first-run but I have zero memory of it apart from the title. I do remember the crappy sound matching and Mel Blanc’s weird 1970s voice (somewhere along the line, they quit speeding it up).
I liked that first Tweety cartoon with the Abbot and Costello pastiche cats, that one was funny and had some edge. Then they went and “clothed” Tweety and he became lame.
At least he wasn’t as awful as the baby kangaroo. What was that crap about? How did they think they could milk multiple cartoons out of such a flimsy premise.

I've always found all of the Silverster and Tweety stuff EXTREMELY fucking boring every single time I watched it. I felt that way as a child, as a teenager and as an adult. I've always questioned why the fuck they even bothered to show THAT MUCH of it.
If anything, show more Bugs Bunny! HE'S the big star of the show!

I've been curious about this one since X-Entertainment mentioned it on their list of obscure Thanksgiving specials.
I can't say that I'm too surprised that, like most 70s-80s Looney Tunes specials, it's cobbled together from old shorts.

I'm with you on Tweety. If I want a talking Loony Tune that get's chased I'll stick with Speedy Gonzales. Also, my favorite Sylvester cartoons are the one's where he's Porky's cat.

Actually, the cartoons that showcase Sylvester Jr. is actually the REAL Sylvester when he was a kid(Proven many times on commentaries and behind the scenes stuff). Notice that Tweety never appears in any of those shorts.

His official name is Sylvester JUNIOR making him the Son of Sylvester, and while Tweety may have not been in them, Hippety Hopper appears in many Junior cartoons as well as regular Sylvester cartoons. And in modern incarnations, Junior has appeared with Sylvester and the rest of the characters.

You could say that but since the people who were involved in making the shorts say Sylvester Jr. is Sylvester when he's young, you have to accept it since, well, they made them! As Brad said in his Wreck-it Ralph review, "THE DIRECTOR JUST TOLD YOU WHAT IT MEANT!!! END OF FUCKING DISCUSSION!!!"

Who cares what the director says? If the audience doesn't accept a movie it dies in obscurity, so the audience calls the shots. For example, if gay people connect with a movie then it's a gay movie, no matter what the director says.

i love loony toons. I always hated it when they edited them down. Especially when Nick was playing them in the early 90s. Fortunately cartoon network IS playing them again, at like 6 am. or least was the last time i checked.

I think I vaguely recall watching this special on TV a few times as a kid and even then I recognized reused footage that was cut to hell myself!
I did bootleg a lot of old shows to VHS as a kid too but I was lucky in the uncut original release Loony Tunes shorts. I'm not sure how even then but dollar stores and some retail chains sold VHS tapes of like 2-3 worth of old 30-60s era shorts. And all were 100% uncut because I remember owning and watching over and over til the tapes wore out some of the old and very racist and un-PC by today standard shorts. All the old WW2 stuff and the stuff like an old black and white Porky cartoon with him in Africa! Which I want another Brad makes Sarah watch with those!
I remember the tom and Jerry cartoons with them smoking and using like realistically draw guns and weapons!

I do agree the Tweaty stuff was boring except the earliest of those like the one with the Abbot and Costello parody cats set during WW2 because then he was actively causing trouble. The later shtick for him/her was just sitting there and quipping as the cat characters hurt themselves trying to get him!
hey maybe some one out there can help m I remember seeing in one short some where Bugs had his own Miny Mouse style female doppelganger for a little while in that she basically looked just like him but with black hair and a blue dress... where was that from!?
Also, Brad you still got a lot of those old Holiday specials? I miss a lot of those old one from Christmas I watched as a kid and they don't show no more!

"Daffy Duck's Quackbusters" sounds like a great choice for an 80s Dan episode, I'll admit. Of all the WB narrative cartoon cavalcades on TV and in theatres, that one hits the nostalgia button. That beautiful, shiny button. That jolly, candy-like button. "CUUUU-BIIIIIISH!"
The biggest shock I got from watching an uncut Looney Tunes short was when I saw "An Itch In Time," the A. Flea vehicle which ends with the house cat observing Elmer and the dog being carried away on the silver platter. Depressed that he's seen everything there is to see, he takes the "Scarlett Pumpernickel" route and shoots himself in the head. From there on out, I became a full-length Looney Tune purist. Although I did appreciate "The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner" movie for simply just letting many of the original shorts stand by themselves without alteration. I loves me the madcap prankster existentialism of "Duck Amuck" any day.
Tweety is admittedly one of my lesser favorite characters...the Dodo, Pepe Le Pew and even Michigan J. Frog trump the poor boid in my book. But BooRat mentioned that Abbott/Costello lampoon, "A Tale of Two Kitties," which at least had the gumption to give proto-Tweety a devious personality. For the most part, though, she's too much of a foil, requiring too much help from Granny or Hector the Bulldog, and not enough of a comic instigator.

I remember watching this special on VHS and I did enjoy it ok.
As for Looney Tunes I did grew up with them. And yes, I didn't like the Tweety cartoons except for the fact that I had sympathy to Sylvester wishing he get that bird (in fact, in a webcomic called Sandra and Woo that bird gets the comeupance.... still don't bother, is a terrible webcomic).

Well, to be fair...
Tweety was ORIGINALLY a lot funnier. When Bob Clampett created/directed his first several cartoons.
Back then, Tweety was a sadistic, wise-ass with a shit-eating grin and knew exactly what he was doing when he would smash wrenches on a cat's head or blow them up with M-80's, and then either mock their pain or jump scare the audience by suddenly screaming. Also, he was buck-ass naked.
Bob Clampett's cartoons made EVERYTHING funny. Even Tweety. It was Friz Freeling that would later ruin Tweety and turn him into the annoying, clueless little shit you see in these cartoons.
